Walking down the street with my lover, it’s not out of the ordinary for people to stop and stare at us. Sometimes dogs will whine and growl, and other times children will point, but that’s only because I’m dating a dragon. Sideshow performer, Burns The Dragon is aside, from being a very talented artist, also slowly turning himself into a piece of living art! Burns is currently transitioning from human to dragon through the use of tattoos and body modification.

With the help of body modification and piercer Russ Foxx, Burns is realizing his dream to become a human/dragon hybrid. He has had his ears tipped and pointed at the top, and scalloped along the earlobe. He has also had his tongue split and tattooed purple, had 3D implanted horns and has his eyes tattooed purple as well. In addition to this, he has also beaten the world record for longest tattoo at an amazing 51 continuous hours!

The tattoo, which includes a full back piece comprise of wings and a spine, end in a tail which wraps around his right leg, and also calf pieces and forearm work, too was designed and completed by Brandon Fancie of Lucid Design and Tattoos from Alberta, Canada. The pair tattooed for over two days at The Fall Tattooing in downtown Vancouver, where we live, and had a live camera stream, as well as plenty of well-wishers who stopped to give their best to the spectacle. “You could see on my forearm where the 50 hour mark is,” Burns likes to laugh, “My body had begun to reject the ink. Who knew that would happen after 50 hours? But it’s my badge of honour that we beat the record”.

As well as being a sideshow performer who thrills the audience with his shock acts such as glass walking, balancing on a longboard of nails, and of course fire breathing, Burns enchants his audiences with his playful contact juggling. If you’ve ever seen the 1986 film ‘Labyrinth’ starring the late David Bowie, you’ll know this type of juggling, where a crystal ball appears to float around the juggler’s hands. It never fails to delight – even when he is just using apples, oranges, or anything else out of my crisper drawer at home.

Burns plans to continue getting modifications and tattoos until he is fully covered from head to toe. My mum laughs to think of it, and enjoys telling people in terms of my courtship that I was always fiercely fond of dragons – so dating a living dragon man makes perfect sense. In the meantime, Burns and I continue to perform with our sideshow/circus collective, The Caravan Of Creeps, and I continue to watch his evolution into Vancouver’s Dragon Man.
