More than Human: Animal Portraits by Tim Flach

A renowned London-based photographer Tim Flach presents his work of seven years in an animal portrait book called More than Human“. By taking striking close-up shots of various animals, Tim attempts to demonstrate how close can animal gestures and poses get to those of the humans.

What looks like images of unselfconscious and spontaneous reactions of the animals, is actually a result of long research and observation done by the artist. Every animal responds differently to temperature changes, light, human presence and even sounds – some of them would feel better with the music on, while the other would get intimidated by it.

The carefully lit and cropped images evoke unexpected sense of intimacy and empathy even with the less cuddly animal models. Tim did everything to create individual settings for all of them, and his magnificent pictures prove that all the efforts paid off.

it’s interesting how we love to see the backgrounds removed. to see these animals out of context. to put them in such a boring environment. they are beautiful no doubt but considering they’re sitting on a seemless backdrop with lights in their faces rather than in their natural environment.

i love his perspective but it saddens me to see how we can become so invested in proving personhood for animals but we refuse to acknowledge the evils of killing a human baby in its mother’s womb.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jessica.vincent.315 Jessica Vincent

Seriously. You had to turn this into an abortion issue?

    • Jen

So, Amber… how much time do you donate at a womens’ shelter? Are you a volunteer daycare worker, a Big Sister, a foster mother, or an adoptive parent? I am a mother. I made the choice you would rather I never had. And my child was born – why does the right to life only seem to matter to some people up until there IS a life? Try making the world those children are all being brought into a bit better.

    • Nun

Pretty ignorant statement and I agree with the question of, ‘what are you doing to make the world a better place’? Let me guess, complaining instead of helping out those who are alive. What a self-obsessed, spoiled brat you are. So, instead of looking for ways to help others, you just stand around passing judgements over those who are most likely making the most difficult and heart breaking decision of their lives. Selfish, selfish, selfish. Wouldn’t it be great if all the teenage pregnancies or accidents were placed on your door step? That’d keep selfish people like you busy so you can mind your own business and start being of use to the world. I’ve got news for you. Abortion isn’t ‘killing a human baby in its mother’s womb’ because that baby is dead anyway if its born into a world full of people like you. Grow up and start helping out and for crying out loud, learn compassion for others and for yourself and then you’ll be more apt to see the pain of those around you instead of selfishly adding to it. Shame on you! Spoiled child.
