The train maquette displayed at the National Stadium in Warsaw was open until last Sunday, May 29th. I went to photograph it with an eye to more philosophical lessons you can learn from miniature objects.
I wasn’t as interested in trains per se as in particularly telling fragments of the exhibition. In this world accidents only happen away from the tracks (and if there is any derailment, it is quickly taken care of by the technical staff), a stationmaster is waving at an empty platform for most of the time, and people die run over by tractors.
This picture is not entirely humourless either: an angler catches a diver. In the light of this the presentation of the trains might seem like a sideshow to life on the trackside.
And here the journey begins
Let me take you for a ride
Before the train even leaves the station the engine plays on the merry-go-round
An onlooker is puzzled by the arrested movement
Accidents happen trackside
But they are quickly taken care of if you’re driving a yellow convertible
Being run over by a tractor is tough luck
And accidents happen at work
The firefighters douse the electric flames with LED lights
There clearly some winners in this game
The diver is caught of guard by the angler (one of the most commented jokes in the exhibition)
If trains suffer any damage in the maquette, it is duly repaired (without any visible progress)
The culprits identified themselves as football hooligans
Eventually even trains end up as fossil
Endlessly waiting for the train to pass
