I Designed A Folding Lamp As A Wedding Gift And It Became The Beginning Of Something Amazing

In 2008, my best friend got married, and I wanted to offer him a special gift. Something unique that he might keep and use forever. I remembered that he always loved to fold simple sheets of paper into beautiful figurines, so I decided to include him in the process of the lamp design, inspired by origami papercraft.

I offered him a simple pre-scored steel plate, which he could fold into his own cool lamp. I thought it would be a one-time home decor project. It turns out, and I couldn’t have been more wrong. The unique design went viral, with pictures appearing on many design blogs so much that it attracted the attention of a London based architect who wanted to order 800 lamps! Unfortunately, at the time, I didn’t know how to fund, mass-produce, and market my room lighting concept.

Then in 2015, I met Robert. He loved the story behind the lamp and asked to be the co-founder of a new company to produce my cool design. He helped me improve the original design. We added touch sensors, so now the lamp can be dimmed and switched on and off with a gentle touch on any part of the beautiful metal housing. We are currently raising funds on Kickstarter to scale up from prototype to product.
