36 Strange and Funny Google Street View Photos

We wanted to post these awesome Google Street View photos a long time ago, but somehow they got lost along the way. Luckily, I found them while reading Twisted Sifter. We tried our best to find more cool examples of Google Street View images, however almost every source was pointing to Jon Rafman.

Montreal based artist Jon Rafman isn’t the original photographer but instead he explores Google Street Views and takes screenshots of the most unusual and funny sights. The original images were taken by an army of Google’s hybrid electric automobiles, each one equipped with nine cameras on a single pole trying to photograph every highway and byway in the world.

“The world captured by Google appears to be more truthful and more transparent because of the weight accorded to external reality, the perception of a neutral, unbiased recording, and even the vastness of the project,”  said Jon in his interview to Art Fag City.

“With its supposedly neutral gaze, the Street View photography had a spontaneous quality unspoiled by the sensitivities or agendas of a human photographer. It was tempting to see the images as a neutral and privileged representation of reality—as though the Street Views, wrenched from any social context other than geospatial contiguity, were able to perform true docu-photography, capturing fragments of reality stripped of all cultural intentions.”

Without further ado, here are 36 strangest and funniest Google Street View photos from Jon Rafman’s collection with a couple of our own finds.

Some of them are more scary than funny. ;P

    ^i agree.

Unfortunately, a lot of these are photoshopped. The most obvious one is the the last one…look at the seagull’s wings. How come one of them is chopped off? Another obvious one is the black woman on the side of the road…not only is she completely out of proportion to the road and sign next to her, but her lighting is completely different from the rest of the photo. As you go through these, it’s really not difficult to pick out the fake ones. Sorry to bust your bubble.

Sorry to bust your bubble too, but you can see the seagull on Google Street View here: http://goo.gl/frSmE . It may seem to be photoshopped because it’s the result of joining many different pictures taken at slightly different time.

yes she looks like a tiny fairy of some sort …

Some of these look deliberately staged by the general public too. The men in diver’s suits and the man in the gas mask probably happened to be in a position to don the gear in time for the Google van to pass. The men in Samurai suits I’m not so sure about!

To me, the horse going thru trash is the saddest. She should be in a pasture grazing on yummy grass.

    • WildWanderer

I stayed at a hostel once in the UK. It was in the middle of the countryside with miles of green fields and nature. Still horses came to raid the hostel rubbish bins, tipping them over and rummaging through them. There were often 2 or 3 at it. A horse at the rubbish bins doesn’t mean that the horse is deprived of nature; they will choose the bins themselves.

That one and the stuck dog nearly broke my heart.

      • WildWanderer

It was a fox not a dog. It seemed to me to be just squeezing through the fence. Foxes usually know what they’re doing.

You must be from the city, that’s a dog, not a fox. lol
