Hilarious and Sexist Dating Tips From 1938

Many of us must be familiar with the feeling when our parents tried giving us dating advice, and would make every single person in the room feel awkward. Besides, how many of those did you actually ever find useful? Well here’s a dating guide that might seem ridiculously outdated at first – given that the Parade Magazine published it back in 1938- but don’t be too quick to judge! Sure, some of the advice might sound a bit sexist at times, but most of them could actually be regarded as universally acknowledged guidelines of good behavior.

Some girls might not be too fond of being told not to get sentimental, or not to caress her dates too much in public, or to never make a man wait – but combined together, all of these advice help to shape an image of a classic woman, who sure knows how to keep a man intrigued. Regardless of times, it is also always a good idea not to get too drunk on the first date, not to chat about your previous dates with waiters or to at least try not to look bored on a date. Plus, the pictures that illustrate the tips are pretty hilarious!

What do you think?

  • Jeff Childs

Sounds like good advice to me. ;)

  • Courtney Stone

Some of these could STILL be applied to a Younger generation of women who think that NOT acting like a lady is okay. Gross! Ladies act correctly, men should treat ladies right. Its a TWO way street! :)

  • Petrovici Nicolae Florin

  • Sean Roy

Meh, I think a lot of American women should take some of this advice.

  • April Kelley McGallion

Seems like just being polite and respectful to me!

  • Petr Staníček

Is it genuine vintage or a fake?

  • Marianne Nielsen

A few of them is still worth listening to… The ones about alkohol. BUT for both genders…

  • Stéphane Martial

    Those were the good days

  • Molly Brown

wow. “Never look bored, even if you are.” more like, “If you are bored, make a polite exit and never see the guy again”.

  • Blanca Delgado

Estos tiempos son más divertidos, hay más compañerismo entre ambos sexos.

  • Sarah Shaw

    Attention, Sophie Wozniak, Kate Wozniak.

  • Sarah Shaw

    Attention, Sophie Wozniak, Kate Wozniak.

  • Paul Tomlin

:-) and they call these “the good old days”? Think not

  • Mocca

Aber auf dem letzten Bild macht sie doch alles richtig, oder nicht?

  • Sujit Jothikumar

I dont see anything wrong with it

  • Joan Brown

Amusing pictures…ONE-SIDED but mostly universally acknowledged guidelines of respectful behavior!! NB CORRECTION – (forget the “icky” word “normal”) – RESPECTFUL behaviour!

  • Jaz D’Silva

I would have died an old, single lady.

  • Oisín Peavoy

Sounds like good advice. I see nothing sexist about it.

    • laura

I totally agree, I see nothing wrong there o.O

    • Shari

Well, perhaps the “flatter your date by talking about the things he wants to” part is a little insane. You don’t want to hear about her clothes, she does not want to hear about your car. I am many years married, but to my mind a perfect date would be one in which we spoke exclusively of how much we love to play Skyrim :-)

  • Liz Lizardo Carroll

These are hilarious! I particularly like the one about dancing

    • Alexa

No talking! A MAN just wants to dance dammit! :)

  • David Yeh

  • Joseph C Hofler

Dating is inherently sexist. That is the whole point of the exercise!

  • Mouni Mouni Mouni

  • Flavio Burda

  • Ali Mae

umm…great photos? the advice is outdated but sometimes relevant.

  • Lorrie Hamrich

what a crock- do we have a new panda running this site?

  • anonymus

Ignore the fact this is exclusively for women and this is just advice for first dates, it was very important the first date went perfectly, the first impression is very important to people. First dates are hardly the worst of it, whether or not women made progress. It is too easy to blame men, but people don’t know how to treat each other. We get in close relationships, we love someone, but abuse them. We date someone, but rape them. We are in class with someone and we bully them. We love our family, but ignore them. We have learned it is easier to abandon someone then help them. We have learned it is easier to use someone and reject them, blame them, and then do it again. We aren’t people anymore, we are caricatures of sins and bad intentions with good reasons. We make this world difficult for others and why? money, power, ignorance or whatever we think will make us happy…whatever all to make suffering a little easier for us and a lot worse for someone else. People disgust me and I am one, being a people is worse than death, but death is too easy, so I’m here ranting. Hate men, hate women, we are all horrible and we are all the same. What can you do about it? change yourself, it is easier said than done, but seriously progress here can help.
