Amazon AI Designed To Create Phone Cases Terribly Malfunctions, Fills Store With 31,35 Hilarious Products
Amazon sellers have been experimenting with AI for a number of years now, but the company clearly wasn't keeping an eye on the mischievous bot that recently had its way with their 'phone accessories' section.
My Handy Design, whose creator is still unknown, was a bot programmed to fetch frequently searched images, turn them into iPhone 6 cases, and put them up for sale. The bot's algorithm somehow went rogue, however, and began scouring images so bizarre that we can only assume they came from the darkest, most depraved corners of the Internet. Whoever set this thing loose is either nursing a giant migraine right now, or rolling on the floor laughing.
Before long, My Handy Design had created thousands of phone cases displaying everything from marinated herring rolls to cocaine, and customers were having a field day in the reviews. Though most of them have now been flagged as 'adult products,' we're sure they're still going to be outselling OtterBoxes any day now. I think "Ill-designed algorithm fills third-party vendor shop on Amazon with 31.000 odd articles before it is stopped" would be more precise, but probably get less clicks. And surely this is no algorithm that would fall under the AI umbrella.

I like them all. Tasteful and nicely made, with a great choice of pictures. I'm just a little sad there's no spoon or tree or something in the picture of the old diapered dude, you know, something's missing there. If there was an owl inspecting his crotch, I'd buy it, although I don't have a smart phone.

Is there a charge for putting up items for sale on Amazon, or keeping them listed, until and unless one sells? If not, this may actually be a bit of brilliance in disguise. 31,000 random items, which presumably aren't produced until someone actually orders one, means 31,000 chances someone will want one. And they didn't even have to go in and hand-pick the photos themselves, the algorithm did it for them. Given that some of them show as "out of stock," clearly people are ordering some of them. And if the ones that don't sell didn't cost anything but a few computer clock cycles to make, they come out ahead in the end.
