School Asks 100 Graffiti Artists To Paint It Before Renovation, And Result Is Better Than Any Renovation
Most schools looks pretty bland, with safe homogeneous colors and uninspired designs, but one hundred graffiti artists have just turned the boring walls of a dormitory in Paris into a stunning celebration of art and creativity.
The team spent three weeks painting the interior of a student residence at the Cité Internationale Universitaire in Paris. The artists, who were invited as part of Rehab 2, an urban festival that ran from 16 June to 16 July, were given free reign to let their imaginations run wild before the space was opened to the general public. Sadly the exhibition will only be on display for a limited period because the art will soon be erased during an official renovation of the dormitory, but fortunately photographers have documented the project so that their incredible efforts will live on. Check out some of our favorite pictures below, and don't forget to vote for the best.

Load More Replies...Renovate?? Let them paint it again. Then it's their school . Their art. I wouldn't have the heart to paint over it. Great job students..YOU ALL ROCK!
I imagine what if the grade school or high school I went to as a young person would have been like if this kind of creatiity were permitted, children encouraged to colour in the art. Great energy and positive. Love it.
Wow the creativity and thought this would provoke.....what a great idea #killerspark
kids will love it use washable paints it will continue to be a homerun activity
That's the word I've been searching my entire life for.
Load More Replies...This hall way is to relax for a bit before you turn the next corner.
This would be a great place to sit and study. It looks quite and soothing (on the one side). Beautiful!
*me:* *holds up a photo of Grumpy Cat* "No." XD
Load More Replies...I want to be an art teacher at this school. My assigned essays would include things like: * Discuss the use of actual and dimensional space and colour collaboration as shown in the third floor west corridor * Definite and explain depth and dimension as per artwork in stairwell East 5 * Art as psychological horror - reference South corridor west
I looked at this picture the longest. I see determination and surprise and equality.
have no idea what the thoughts are - amazing art work- so well done
illustrating the uncertainty and the determination in today's learning
That's kind of a brilliant commentary of the glacial melting and the general apathy of the people whose homes will be affected.
The door to the principal's office when you've been caught doing something wrong.
Alas. This would need to be removed. It won't last in a school. It'll get chipped and broken.
It's very narrow & claustrophobic for my taste. The artwork is brilliant. I can appreciate it, but would have a problem staying there. Maybe just a visit..
I do think that school has had an unusual psychotic effect on this Artiest.
I am too old for the school but if they need somebody for sweeping the school floors i agree to do it for free ;) please take me in. this is amazing ^_^
The illusion of continuing into the wall is fantastic.
Load More Replies...It is great piece of art, not sure I would put it in a stairwell, I need to focus on stairs not walls
I think that some of these rooms could use a soft pillows and grandma's afghans.
These paintings are amazing, I can't believe they're going to get covered up though! I can't see artists putting this much time and energy into something that they know is going to be painted over soon :/
Never more can this be here after they destroy all this wonderful art work when they remodel.
I see a few cat and cat trees, some hidden littler boxes and nap lounges for students before an exam.
Awesome, love that happy fellow, and the rest of the wall is well done, easy on the eyes not a lot for the brain to process, which is good every once in a while
This is very different, the wall took a lot of work. I may have been able to do something like the artwork on the floor, maybe, lol
Could be diversity in body type. Diversity could mean so many things.
Perhaps we should pursue diversity in body type too?
Load More Replies...Miss Buzz, a few of these are not "showing diversity" b/c they are highlighting one race. Every single one of these art pieces is DOPE.
Yes. The human race. -- The artist depicted one shade of all our beautiful colors.
Load More Replies...This has changed my mind. This place is already renovated. Just update the sprinkling system, get rid of the roaches, fix the plumbing and heating and air conditioning. If it needs a new roof then do that. Then let the students pick the room they would like to be in. (if they choose the psychotic hall ways make sure they want to be psychiatrist. Or keep a close eye on them) I'm 7 decades old and I love what has been done including the fact that they were welcomed to express themselves . Love the whole concept of this project.
I don't think that's necessary...I like just as it is.

🎶They tried to make me go to Rehab but I said no, ni, no.🎶

As a person with no artistic talent, I look at all of these and ask myself how the hell do they do that?
This is a portrait of my Dear friend, who was raped and murdered in Bangladesh while she was there pursuing her dream of being a doctor. 😓
Load More Replies...I cannot imagine how this person did this with various sizes of circles!!!
that is the best comment I have read all day long!
Load More Replies...Awesome! The one on the right reminds me of the film, "Escape From the Planet of the Apes!"
On second thought, maybe remodel some of these. Students would start having nightmares!
I have to agree on the downer and nightmare inducing places.
Load More Replies...No one has commented so I will. Bloody brilliant, No points needed to be shown.. Typical school
All these are sure gorgeous, but this one might be a bit too graphic for school, maybe?
If you read the article you would see this has been done before a renovation, clue is in the title!
Load More Replies...Ok but the chimpanzee with the lady under the umbrella? Not porn. Cool AF.
I agree it may be much for school but they did say it was before renovating, and I can admire the message in it. It makes us uncomfortable because it should, the artist is pointing out the female being over sexualize, and especially ethnic shapely woman being over sexualized.
What I get from this is modesty. The less dressed pictures, she's alone. When she covers up, she's not alone anymore. I think it's perfect.
Shame all of these get destroyed they should invite the best back to re paint some of the new walls
Truth be told, most of this artists are far better than many that the ones in museums.
sadly this is a european school they'd never allow this kind of creativity in a US school. I would be overwhelmed by all of the visual stimulation if it was everywhere. So would some kids who cannot handle excessive stimuli
I think so many colours would drive me to insanity at some point if I study in a place like that. Never the less, it's pity the exhibition would be gone in a few weeks, the creators of this master-pieces really made a lot of effort.
Was about to write something similar. The art looks stunning and all, but I wouldn't be able to concentrate and study there. There's just too much going on that would make me all jittery.
Load More Replies...Street art is ephemeral. It's not meant to be permanent and the artists know that. That's what makes what they do so important. The whole thing has been thoroughly photographed, and if the school is smart, they''ll sell it and use the proceeds for the school. They could also auction random sections of drywall.
Load More Replies...is this school underground? its giving me anxiety that there are no windows
I'm pretty sure it's because the graffiti is in the hallways as apposed to the classrooms.
Load More Replies...My daughter's high school art class had a hallway. Painted white during summer break, class project to paint it again each year.
Yeah, but only because it wouldn't really be be much of a school with all those colours, it'd be treated more like a circus lol
Load More Replies...I've been there twice and your amazing pictures reveal things i've seen :-)
Crazy place, wonderfull pix!! dontcarebe...5267db.jpg
I think it would physically hurt me to paint over these. Wish there was a way to display them at MOMA in New York.
I want this to happen at our company. Its offices look a wee bit dull for a video games company. But some of us do try our best to decorate our desks with figures, pictures and other geekastic goodies.
Load More Replies...What a waste of resources, time and art if it will just be erased.
I don't see how this is a waste of anything. The passion the artists have put in is incredible. The planning, team working, effort and decision making are all skills that are transferable into adult life/jobs. This may be the first/only time these young people have the opportunity for others to see their work and receive positive feedback or constructive criticism. Being able to exhibit work on this scale, reaching people who otherwise might not see this type of artworks thereby giving other's a new experience of visual art is great. They may have learnt a lot about the design process, and improved other creative skills. Art isn't always meant to be permanent-graffiti or pavement artists working in chalk for example-this doesn't make it pointless or a waste. It can be photographed (another art form!) and exhibited giving even more people the opportunity to learn and experience new things. I could go on but you get my drift!
