There’s a new airport in Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat and it looks fierce! The falcon-like structure cost $2.3 billion and can process over 1600 passengers an hour. Unfortunately, only 105,000 tourists visited the country in 2015 or 12 an hour which made a lot of people question the purpose of the project.
Turkmenistan gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. It produces about 70 billion cubic metres of natural gas each year which is the main source of income for the country with the population of 5 million. Like many post-soviet countries, it suffers high levels of corruption. It also has dictatorship rule, therefore the media is controlled by the government.

Beautiful building, but I question the wisdom of spending that much money on a building, when millions of Turmeni citizens are living in relative poverty.
They're not living in "relative poverty". Who told you that??
Load More Replies...I bet those folks landing at this airport get an amazing photo when arriving at this airport! WOW!
If this is a real airport (built and being used) why aren't there actual pictures of the airport versus architectural renderings?
Look at the credits; one is an AP photo, another from AP and presumably a photo. The other two look like photos, imho.
Load More Replies...To all that say, oh, they should feed their citizens, go on wikipedia. Also, it's important for any country to let a chance for architecture and art to be expressed. It gives history to a country. That and the fact that every country tends to spend money on very expensive things even though they suffer from some form of poverty. I'm sur there is homeless people in USA, that would have loved to receive a bit of the money spent on the new world trade center.
State of the art masterpiece. ......who knows where will the country be in
Jiiir bagus banget. bisa banget buat set film, mungkin emang itu tujuan pemerintahnya. (sekali-kali lah komen pake bahasa.)
www.polimeks.com it is site of company which designed and build this project. also, there you can find a consept animation... actually it is 2 different building: first one(from up to down) is a main building of international airport, the second one is a ViP building it is near to main building... =)
Reminds me of the the TWA terminal that is pretty much abandoned at JFK
