Listen To 230-Ft Organ That Uses The Sea To Make Haunting Music In Croatia
In a mesmerizing collaboration between mankind and the elements, this 230-foot sea-organ in Croatia harnesses the energy of the winds and waters of the Adriatic sea to create random but soothing and harmonized notes.
The sea-organ, or “morske orgulje” as it’s know in Croatian, was designed by Croatian architect Nikola Basic and opened to the public in 2005. Water and wind enter through holes at the bottom of the steps, where they are channeled into resonating chambers. The sounds from these chambers exit through holes along the highest steps.
The site is a popular lunch-spot for tourists and locals alike, but it wasn’t always this way. After being completely devastated during WWII, the reconstruction of Zadar left it full of ugly concrete constructions, and among these was a long concrete shoreline. I think we can all agree that this organ was a huge improvement! Scroll down to hear how it sounds!

Share on FacebookBeen there, sat for hours at this sea organ. The recording doesn't do it justice. If we had stayed in Zadar for longer, I'd have come there every evening. Sitting there and watching the sun go down and listening to the organ was something magical and meditating. Don't be so negative without hearing it in real life!

It is absolutely one of the coolest designs and places I have ever heard and seen! I love Croatia!
Some fun facts... There is no whales in Adriatic Sea and Sea Organ is producing sound above the sea level meaning no fishes, dolphins or shells will be disturbed during sleeping. They will just be eaten by local people. Except dolphins of course.
the recording makes it sound weird. i'm thinking, can it be turned off? but if it sounds better in real life...
Thanks for sharing! I wasn't even aware of such a place, until I read this. Fascinating!
Tapping into the sounds of nature is really astounding. Were I able I'd love to spend some time at this Croatian seaside listening to this wonderful haunting music.
Just beautiful. I would love to live near this or to be able to lay on the ground above the organ and enjoy
Years ago in the Santa Fe , New Mexico area there was a park where artistic displays often took place. One year an artist created a large harp like creation. It was attuned to and played by the wind. The idea to do so, as I heard, was prompted by such as this great tribute to the natural world and the creations of human beings. Thank you for sharing this wonderful bridge to remind people we also are part of the natural world. Goodlife
It's certainly original, but I don't really like the sound. Normal sea shores have very relaxing sound, that one is bordering between creepy and annoying (Although it does look nice)
The recording doesn't do it any justice, in fact this is one of the worse videos I've seen. In reality, the sound is incredibly peaceful, relaxing and enchanting.
Load More Replies...Probably freaks out marine life. Certianly wouldn't want to live anywhere within hearing of it!
Well, nobody has to. It's on the shore of the Old town and nearest buildings aren't very close. There is zero chance of hearing it unless you sit beside the organ or walk within a few meters. It doesn't disturb neither people nor wildlife, but it attracts many tourists and gained the city several prizes. I don't think you can have the right idea unless you have seen it and heard it in real life.
Load More Replies...It's awful... Just a lot of noise. The idea was brilliant but the result? Not so brilliant.
In real it's amazing, trust me :) But no video or record doesn't give this very well...
