Woman Orders $600 Meal For 1 At One Of America’s Most Expensive Restaurants, And Posts The Meals She Gets
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to treat yourself to a $600 meal at one of the world’s best restaurants? While clearly no substitute for the real thing (the crucial senses of taste and smell cannot be replicated over the internet… yet), Imgur user Hoptail has allowed us to eat vicariously through her graphic descriptions and photos from a restaurant in San Francisco.
“So I got sent to San Francisco for work and I always make a habit of visiting the best restaurants when I travel. I’m not well-off by any means – I’m a college student. But I love good food and I save up for this shit. So please enjoy living vicariously through these photos of my dinner for 1 at Saison,” she said.
Taking us on a mouthwatering tour of the meal, which included an astonishing array of courses, Hoptail manages to convey her fine dining experience beautifully and without a hint of the snobbish tone usually reserved for such reviews.
Despite this, the young Aussie still copped quite a bit of flak on the net (inevitably) for her apparent extravagance in choosing to spend her money in such a fashion while a student, from vegans and from those vigorously opposed to the rampant restaurant photography that seems to have become the norm these days. “Documenting your food is becoming more and more acceptable now, even in high-end restaurants,” she explained. “I’m aware that I looked like an instawhore, but.. well, firstly, I don’t have Instagram, and secondly, if I’m going to spend that much on a meal, I want to be able to appreciate it later and share it with people who would find it interesting.”
Helpfully, Hoptail added a short FAQ at the end of her post, which she used to address some of these concerns in a satisfyingly forthright way. “For those of you with the disparaging comments about this endeavour not being worth it, or that I shouldn’t be spending my money on stuff like this if I’m not financially well-to-do. Kindly shove it up your arse. It’s my money, and this is what I like. I could be strung out on cocaine or have a crippling meth addiction. Cut me some slack. Go to Wendy’s if you WANT to, ain’t nothing wrong with that – you do you.”
Fair enough, Hoptail. Scroll down to check out her pics and descriptions below, and feel free to share your own fine dining experiences in the comments. Also feel free to discuss the merits or otherwise of spending a ton of cash on a single meal. Is it worth it for the experience? Let us know what you think!
“The most heavenly tea I’ve ever had in my life. Each little bushel had douglas fir, yarrow, chamomile, lemon balm, anise and hyssop all picked fresh from the restaurant farm and steeped in hot meyer lemon water”
“Up next, baby spinach, roasted kelp cooked in clarified butter (compliments of their jersey cow Bella) and topped with caviar”
“Turbot fish – 2 ways. Sashimi was amazing. The second preparation was grilled with a light soy glaze. Came with little heirloom tomatoes and some sort of deepfried flower”
“A Geoduck. If you’ve never heard of them before, Google it. They are freaky looking AF. Honestly, it wasn’t that good. Just kind of chewy and the marinade was super overwhelming I couldn’t actually taste the meat”
“This was, hands down, my favourite course. Fresh sea urchin on grilled bread that was basted in a sauce made of the off-cuts of the bread. It was SUPER creamy.. like the butter of the sea. So amazingly fresh and the sauce in the bread was incredible”
“That’s sliced radish on top (again from their farm) with Bella’s clarified butter”
“Underneath there was a sort of radish jelly vinegar reduction, the radish tops and cubes of marinated radish. It was super fresh and tart and a really good transition from the richness of the previous course”
“This is roasted pumpkin – 3 ways. The first to the left is kind of like agedashi tofu except it’s torn roast pumpkin topped with octopus flakes”
“Second preparation was pumpkin hung over their in-house fire and slow roasted for like 8 hours with a buttermilk cream. Caramelisation was incredible”
“Not sure about this one. Pumpkin puree in cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil. It felt like it was kind of added as an afterthought and was way too salty. I’m not even sure how I was supposed to eat it”
“This is antelope. It came with stuffed radicchio, herb salad and really nice biscuits and honey butter that tasted like pancakes”
“It was well-seasoned and had the texture of a cross between venison and beef and was perfectly medium-rare”
“Antelope bone broth with sage. It was actually really nice, but I needed to move on from Bambi’s relatives”
“This is smoked ice cream. Don’t ask me the science behind how one smokes ice cream – but it’s got something to do incorporating exotic wood embers into the cream. So incredible though, and came with life-changing salted caramel”
“Accompanying assortment of candied toppings (walnuts, peanuts, cacao nibs and pine nuts)”
“Dessert, yes. The best part. Praise Jesus, my palette has been blessed. Amen”
“Orange buttermilk creamsicle”
“Super smooth, really creamy and had hidden segments of candied oranges at the bottom”
“Blueberry sorbet on top of brandy macerated blueberries. Topped with more brandy. Good if you like brandy. I don’t”
“The Saison “Snickers” bar. This is an off-menu item that comes if you befriend the right waiter. Some sort of dark chocolate and nut brownie base, salted caramel centre, chocolate ganache and topped with 24K gold”
“Honestly, this was an awesome experience and, for me, well worth the money”

Share on FacebookI think people criticizing various aspects of this are failing to put it all together. Hell yeah, $600 is a lot but this so much more than an exquisite meal, it's an experience that everyone should indulge at least once in their lifetime. These photos cannot capture the sights & smells, fresh linens instead of paper napkins, being treated like royalty, & the wine pairings with each course that come with such a meal. Portions are small because there are so many courses, it's not meant to be a plateful of meat 'n taters to wolf down. All of this is prepared fresh & carefully by highly trained chefs & staff, not hash slingers throwing something frozen in the deep fryer. It's the difference between Dodge & Lamborghini.
Agreed. On a very rare occasion, I have gone for a tasting meal with a few friends. By the time we add drinks and tip, it is aprox $200 per person, but it is often a 3+ hour meal where each unique item is carefully prepared and described and service is always perfect.
Load More Replies...honestly that was a s**t ton of food! Not individually of course but if you put all of that together that was a big portion with honestly pretty healthy ingredients save the dessert. If I get to a point in my life when I'm financially secure and can afford some luxuries, food like this would be right up there with travel. Life is short, experience everything you can and that's not something anyone should hate on.
I get that there's plenty of room for ridicule or contempt here...but I see where she's coming from, here. This was not just a meal, but an experience: exotic, flavorful, colorful, and unique. Watching these photos was like travelling to restaurants all over the world. She feels that it was worth the money, and I believe her. It wouldn't be worth it for me, of course--after all, a thing is only "worth" what you're willing to pay for it--but she makes a compelling case for the meal as an experience.
I don't see plenty of room for ridicule or contempt. Nothing wrong with holding on to working class values, for sure, but nothing wrong with valuing the pleasures of the senses.
Load More Replies...To all those people criticizing what a waste of money was this, and I could feed my family for a year, and so on.... let me tell you something: People can waste their money on whatever they want. This woman saved a lot for something that makes her happy, just as all those people wasting the same amount of money on expensive cellphones twice a year, or laptops, or game stuff. My money, my dreams.
Also, unless you're the kind to destroy money (which is illegal), it's not wasted, merely moved.
Load More Replies...It's her money. She can spend it however she likes. She and patrons like her are the ones keeping the restaurant open, so she's supporting the folks who work there.
You can smoke ice cream buy using dry wood chips (for maximum smoke) and placing the scoop of ice cream on a slab of ice (in a roasting pan/etc) away from direct heat. It only takes a few seconds if the wood chips are smoking.
I am filled with a crushing amount of jealousy and would love to do this someday.
No, no, jealousy is the wrong response...rather, feel inspired! If you want to do something like this someday, then set it as a personal goal. I, for example, want to vacation at a dude ranch for a week someday. That's an expensive, but not out-of-reach, thing to do. I'm saving for it, patiently. When i can afford it, comfortably, without sacrificing other priorities or expenses, then I'll go, and it will be my greatest vacation ever. Remember, the anticipation is part of the experience--and anticipation is both free and priceless!
Load More Replies...I was surprised to see so many dishes! I was expecting maybe 4 or 5 tops, so seeing this many was a pleasant surprise, considering the price...
I think I/we have no business or say in how somebody else chooses to spend their money or eat, if it does not affect me in any way then fine , all over the world everyday people are consuming meals that others could not afford in a lifetime, driving cars most will never even hear of , thats life on earth .
I respect the art form presented here, but I wish people would be more considerate with the phrase "worth the money" as it has a different meaning depending on what $600 is worth to you. If you regularly buy $600 jackets, then yes, this experience is probably better than a jacket. If you regularly pay $600 rent, then no meal will outweigh having a home.
One more thing to add to the bucket list, although I'd have to find a menu without seafood...
At restaurants like these, chefs are pretty accommodating.
Load More Replies...To each his own. If the experience was worth it to her, it's her money. Personally it did not look all that appetizing to me.
I have to say, if you were picking it from a menu with photos (yeah, I know you don't get those in over-priced restaurants), I would never have ordered most of that. A lot of the dishes look truly awful.
I'm a picky eater, and would have had a hard time dealing with the caviar, the clam (the geoduck) and the sea urchin dish, but the rest looked delicious. I checked their website and was startled to see this statement about their menu: "A meal at Saison is whatever you want it to be—within reason. There are no set menus. Our team tailors each diner’s experience to the individual’s preferences and desired duration. Same with wine and beverages. Please let us know in advance what you prefer by calling our reservation team or emailing us here." How amazing is that! They tailor the menu to YOUR preferences! I have never heard of such a thing. And they have a "tasting menu" for $398, so you aren't necessarily stuck with a $600 tab. https://www.saisonsf.com/information/
Load More Replies...I don't earn a lot of money but I do enjoy fine dinning. I appreciate the flavours, the textures, the smells. I also enjoy the experience of sitting in a posh restaurant and being served (I don't eat out that often). When you read about each dish you can only begin to imagine the preparation that has gone into each immaculate and perfectly prepared dish, just for you. Every so often i will save for several months and dine in a Michelin star restaurant and I will savour, not just every bite, but the whole experience. Many dishes are unique to a specific restaurant and I'll probably never experience them again - how cool is that. I've worked and earned that money so why shouldn't I spend it on a little self indulgence? At the end of the day, we know nothing about the woman that had this meal, we should not judge her. She may spend her life giving to charity or doing voluntary work. She believes (as do I) that it was money well spent. Who are we to tell her what she should do.
Well said, Derek! I also enjoy fine dining, and I've found that it's not that difficult to budget all of my living expenses far under the average cost in order to be able to indulge in fabulous meals from time to time.
Load More Replies...Yes! this woman certainly can spend her money in any way that she chooses, as I do with mine... however, I didn't see one bit of that food to be, not in the slightest, as appetizing looking to my eye... but, as said, 'to each his own', or in this case 'her' own! happy that she enjoyed this experience.
Awesome! I'd love to do that. Initially I was like that's nothing, but the portions of different servings kept coming.
600 bucks is a large sum of money but there were so many things to try in that meal. So I'm not surprised of the price, it's supposed to be a luxurious restaurant. However, I highly doubt I'd ever spend so much money on something like that. I'm trying to eat everything as healthy and bio as possible, but I'm also very careful with my money and I can also survive on all kinds of supper scraps if required. What I'm trying to say is that I don't really feel myself like the type of person who would spend money going to some super luxurious and famous restaurants. Hell, I'd love to try some of the things that girl got on her supper, though.
That did look like quite a bit of food, and complicated to make. Nice to see some things are worth it if you can afford it.
She went, she enjoyed, she wins. That's how you live life: do what makes you happy (so long as it doesn't hurt anybody).
I love that! She does win! Go Hoptail. Life's only a competition of who lives it to the fullest, who enjoys being alive. Others can hold on to their dollars and their meat and potatoes. I wanna LIVE, and not "just live responsibly".
Load More Replies...What's wrong with people today? One cannot choose how to spend their money without a vicious attack? How many people eat meat? It's not like she is hunting endangered animals and posting photos of their carcasses. The hypersensitivity of today's millennial culture sickens me. Live your life twitwitts.
I'm never going to have a meal like this so it's fascinating to be able to see and read about another's experience.
I would have had just a totally satisfying of an experience spending $5 at a taco truck a few blocks down the street. That's just me. Whatever floats her boat!
Two comments: First, good for her if that’s what she wanted. Life is too short not to indulge ourselves a bit. There is plenty of opportunity to help the needy and less fortunate. It does not have to be done to the exclusion of our own life experiences. Second, very little of that food looked appetizing (to me). If you like it, knock yourself out. Me? I could eat maybe a third of the things she shared, at least based on her photos and descriptions. Maybe if I were there, it’d be different.
The filters were off. If you were there, I promise you, it would be different!
Load More Replies...Live life the way you want, its yours and yours alone. Nobody has the right to tell you what to do to make you happy. As long as you are happy who cares?
Sorry guys, but I am a poor person. I'd rather splurge 15 dollars and go to an all you can eat buffet and stuff myself til my guts explode. $600 can pay my bills for the month!
Far more money than I would ever spend on a single meal, but I'm sure that everyone has something they're willing to shell out big bucks on that others wouldn't. It is interesting to see what some of those super expensive meals look like though! The orange buttermilk creamsicle does look super tasty, I will admit. However, I will never understand the appeal of eating gold... It's metal...
Most of it didn't look very appetizing to me. But I would be willing to try the sea urchin. There were also two desserts that looked pretty good, the Smoked ice cream and the Orange buttermilk creamsicle. Those three are the only things about the meal that I would like to try. They say you eat with all your senses, including your eyes. So for me it has to look appetizing for me to enjoy it.
Load More Replies...Everyone here is talking about weather it was a waste of money or worth the experience and I'm just like I looked up a geoduck expecting an ugly duck..
Hahaha I was not expecting such a phallic looking "clam,"
Load More Replies...Good on her. For those who will, inevitably, look at the pics and judge without reading the article, allow me to quote her for you: “For those of you with the disparaging comments about this endeavor not being worth it, or that I shouldn’t be spending my money on stuff like this if I’m not financially well-to-do. Kindly shove it up your a**e. It’s my money, and this is what I like. I could be strung out on cocaine or have a crippling meth addiction. Cut me some slack. Go to Wendy’s if you WANT to, ain’t nothing wrong with that – you do you.”
I agree with what the author is saying, that it's worth the experience. But Many people believe it unethical to buy fancy purses and spend extravagantly. You may not be able to stop each person and talk them individually, but putting something up on the internet invites discussion by the nature of what it is. I'm somewhere in the middle, I try to live modestly and consider extra funds to be a way of helping others. But people should be free to do as they please. I also agree with the authors assessment that's she's paying for an experience, and for her that makes it worth it. But should people indulge in such expenses? Buy designer jeans when others are suffering? Many would say no. There's several other posts on bored panda.panda illustrating this pintpanda illustrating this
Don't know what happens at the end. This isn't an ethical dilemma that will be easily solved. But either way I liked the honest and straight forward tone of her review and it was interesting to be able to see what she experienced for such an extravagant meal.
Load More Replies...Is it just me, or does the antelope marrow soup look like swamp water with tadpoles? I am curious if it is actually antelope or pronghorn, which are called "antelope" in the U.S. People in hunting communities consider it poor people food.
Most "delicacies", such as frog legs and escargot, entered the human food chain by necessity. "Poor people food" would be the bologna sandwiches and beef jerky that hunters gnaw on while they stink up their duck blinds.
Load More Replies...Good for her. I took my parents to such a meal, but at only $100 a person and my dad died unexpectedly less than a week later. Life is short...enjoy in whatever way makes your spirit soar.
I’m glad y’all got to have a nice meal together before such a thing happened
Load More Replies...I can honestly appreciate the choice to do this. My 2 closest friends live in different countries to me. And, instead of catching up for coffees / lunch / movies etc all year, we go to a Michelin star restaurant the one time a year we can catch up. We now have a collection of amazing, indulgent, wonderfully memorable experiences.
People who complain, criticize what other people do with their money are usually people with little of their own, envious, no imagination, have very little of a real life, often hypocrites, doing a lot worse. They can go to hell. This is one of those Special "Bucket List" items for some. I wouldn't do it as I know the foods I like including very expensive ones that I some times treat myself too. I don't give a damn what others think, they should have more class, manners and keep their stupid opinions to them selves. Good for her.
PS: I wonder how may of those who are negative waste money smoking, drinking cheap beer or booze, go into debt for c**p, love Junk Food?
Load More Replies...She should write a food blog. She'd bring a fresh perspective to restaurant reviews: she's not wealthy, but visits high end restaurants. It's a way to live vicariously through her, without the pretension of highly paid restaurant critics who are accustomed to such places.
I agree! Her descriptions were simple and to the point. The photos were excellent. Her choices were a lot more courageous than mine would ever be. I would love to follow her food blog. I hope she finds a sponsor and gets to do this full time.
Load More Replies...I personally cannot see *myself* spending ~$600 on one meal.... That said I have done something of the sort. I love to travel and I will tourist in my own State/City/Town/Whatever. I went to St. Augustine a couple years ago and did something like this, I was alone, dressed myself up and took my happy little self to the most expensive restaurant in the city (no where near this price tag... but pretty high for me.), but, like Hoptail I save(d) up for that and for any and all traveling I do. It's something I savor. I relish the experiences and it's so much fun.
That's so cool that you took yourself out for a nice meal! More people should do that, instead of waiting for a friend to make time to go out or save it for a special occasion. You ARE the special occasion. :)
Load More Replies...It looks like she had fun and really enjoyed the foodie experience. Money well-spent.
I myself would never spend that much money on a meal for one. If I were to go out and spend, say, over $100 on a meal, there had better be a LOT of seafood involved. I can cook a gourmet meal at home for WAY LESS money and feed more people. And ALL the dishes would consist of things I love to prepare and eat. I don't begrudge the way ANYONE spends their money. It's THEIRS to spend as they choose. That being said, I would feel guilty for spending so much, when I could go somewhere more affordable; and then take meals to the Homeless or find a way to feed everyone at The Homeless Shelter at least once. And that would be MY choice. I am a person who TRULY enjoys giving to others. It makes ME very happy. All of us have different personalities, different desires, different hobbies. She is obviously a Foodie and she saves up to do this. It's HER hobby, Her choice, and it makes HER happy. So even if you don't agree with her, it's HER money and it makes HER happy. It's not for us to judge.
If this is the kind of thing that Hoptail enjoys doing with her time and money, then I am very, very glad that she has the time and the money to go for it. I personally would love to be able to try some (oh, not all...definitely not all) of the dishes she had the opportunity to try! I loved the photos and the write-up she was so kind to share with us and would enjoy seeing and reading more of her work.
Do they do "doggie bags"? I don't think I could possibly eat all that in one sitting. Somehow, I doubt it, though.
Please tell me they was Sarcasm ,a doggie bag would be to Big for the whole meal to start with
Load More Replies...i have had meals like this one in 3-star restaurants in France. The taste sensation is awakened and enlarged like vision is by the finest art. In the present example however the presentation is not pretty; colors all whites and browns and the pictures do not call forth appetite.
It's okay to treat yourself sometimes...one of my finest meals ever was at Victoria & Albert's at The Grand Floridian Lodge at Disney World, back in 2000. I still have the personalized menu from that and treasure it to this day. It was the first time I tasted caviar and liked it the very first time. The whole thing, including dessert, was over $100. I would never spend that much on dinner for one again, but I don't regret that one time. The thing of it is, when I think of people out there who can't even afford a good meal at McDonald's, I would just cringe today at the thought of spending that much---let alone $600! If Ms. Hoptail hasn't already done so, it would be really awesome for her to treat someone else to a nice meal---and take pictures of that.
Why do you feel the need to assign a charity project to Ms. Hoptail as some sort of tithe for enjoying a meal? Your average breakfast would feed a whole family for a week in some underdeveloped nation. Maybe YOU should be the one taking someone to lunch at McDonalds if your conscience bothers you so much.
Load More Replies...While I, personally, would not do this (even if I had enough money), if this is something that she enjoys doing - well, then, good for her!
I have no problem with her choice. I just think some of the dishes don't look or sound to appetizing. But then I think chicken fried steak is haute cuisine, so what do I know?
Now I really want to have some fancy pancy food! You do you girl, I'm a student right now and I won't buy food for that amount of money, but once I get rich... I certainly will ^_^
(small suggestion—those are pecans, not peanuts) Interesting to see this meal. Thank you for sharing it.
To each his or her own. The cost aside, some of us don’t care for some of the items used. As with any meal, it’s all in ones taste.
Whatever floats your boat... As for me, I'll settle with a nice Beef Wellington covered with Green Pepper Sauce and paired with a nice domestic Cabernet Sauvignon. And for dessert, something rich and chocolatey. Damn it, now I'm hungry...
Whatever floats your boat. As for me, I'll settle for a nice Beef Wellington with Green Pepper Sauce.
That must have been an amazing experience. I'd love to try antelope bone broth! All the food was beautiful.
I can only say Wow amazing! What an extraordinary meal and I am sure it was served over several hours and required palette cleansing after each course. People will spend hundreds on one bottle of wine and not think a thing about that. This was extraordinary, I just loved seeing all the different courses.
Wow.. A tantalizing array to be sure! And yes it is expensive but this is food pushed to the level of high art and if this is what you want to spend your money on all while supporting the chef and his crew, why not? But I am appalled (as a copy editor) to find the word "palette" instead of "palate" make it past the proofreaders...
What a wonderful experience to have enjoyed. Not a thing wrong with indulging yourself once in a while & I would have loved to enjoy that meal too. Have tasted Geoduck & agree with author, but most would be new taste experiences , and isn't that what life's all about?
My husband and I were fortunate to get into The French Laundry a few years back. It was $250 a piece for the chef’s tasting menu or the vegetarian menu. It was 8 or 9 courses (actually we had a couple of extras thrown in because we knew the sommelier, which was pretty nice), and they were also each very small but extremely thoughtful and interesting. It was a 4 hour meal and more than that a true experience. Once in a lifetime (I’d love to do it again one day) and well worth it for the entire performance aspect as well as the incredible food.
Just like a painter, sculpture or other fine artist the chefs that create meals like this spend years perfecting their trade and is reflected in the price of the art. We can't all afford to own it, but, we can all appreciate art on some level, even though we might not be able to touch or taste it. Artists need patrons. There are so many ways to denounce or lift up any topic, I would choose to find the good. If I feel the need to judge or fix something then I'll start with myself.
Lovely, elegant, creative, and delicious! Most people would think $600 is a reasonable price for a very special painting. This meal is an edible work of art. It's not about satisfying the appetite, but taking a journey of the senses through several beautiful scenes. Ms. Hoptail was gracious to share this amazing treat with us. I hope she does it again.
My wife an I ate at a very nice restaurant in the Bellagio and it was a 500.00 dollar meal...similar experience in food and flavor...I enjoyed it but my wife...not so much.
She had fun and totally enjoyed the foodie experience. Money well-spent.
continued:: On the other hand, my opinion on the pictures: Only 3 of those courses looked appetizing to me. The sea urchin, and 2 of the desserts. Also, I would really like to have the serving bowls and plates more than the food on them. Thumbs Up on the tableware, especially the crystalware.
Tammy, have you ever tasted sea urchin? For example, sausage may look like...certain things, but it is still delicious. Don’t judge a book by its cover ;)

And enjoyed the vicarious feast tremendously. And anybody who doesn't like what somebody else does with their money, when it doesn't hurt anyone, is simply petty and absurd.
That's why I'm not rich, it would take much more of that to satisfy my appetite...
I'm not really a food person but damn this is exhilarating just looking at those pictures.
That seems cool for omnis. A splurge on a meal isn’t a bad thing but I wonder what options they’d have for vegans.

However, I think most people would better savour, remember and enjoy the flavours of every dish if they weren't all crammed into a marathon of a few hours dining. I would opt for spending $200/meal for a several more modest meals than doing it all at once.
Looks like you were fed by an Iron Chef, lovely. Too bad you didn't have some company to savor it with.
To be fair there was about 16 different dishes and enough food for 4 people not 1, and it was a high quality meal so $600 isn't that extreme
I was specting less food :D . such a fantastic meal. added to my things to do list.
Forget the food. I have dined at some of the best and chefs can blow you away. But the plating was horrible. The choice of cutlery and the dishes. Jesus. Maybe that was part of the decor, but that is not an excuse for the way the food was put on display, or the things it was served in. What was the theme 1930's? Seriously. If I was there I doubt I would even notice but these are things chefs should be paying attention to if they are serving the finest feast around.
As usual I see the Panda community's respect for differing opinions is non existent. It's an objective fact that there are more responsible things to do with $600 than spend it on food, and that no matter how otherwise humble someone is it's still somewhat pretentious to do so. She still has every right to do it, but that doesn't mean others don't have the right to criticize her for it, and it doesn't make it any less petty or immature when you attempt to downvote them into oblivion.
I could just as easily call you pretentious in your righteous indignation over the cost of her meal. Your proletarian angst is comical. Do you realize that upscale restaurants provide actual living wages to their staff? A waitperson at a four star restaurant can raise a family on their salary. Tips are shared with the other staffers, and competition for the best cooks and servers raises the quality of living for nearly every employee working in food service, with the exception of the poor serfs working at the greasy spoon eateries which you so proudly frequent. The management at those wretched diners understand their penny-pinching clientele harbor a snobbish disdain for anything "fancy", and the shabby aesthetic they cultivate just to convince you you're getting the cheapest vittles in town guarantees every sad old miserable-looking waitress in the joint is still living on starvation wages. But hey, you looked so humble scarfing down that tunamelt on sourdough! Go you!

I also think that paying for amazing experiences is often better than paying for stuff, that just accumulates dust, but I see all these pics and all I really want, now, is a plate of spag bol.
The only question I have is...Was the tea wrapped in a rubber band? I can't imagine that it would be, it just looks like it maybe.
Some people are starving, others are eating gold...If I was rich I would still not eat gold.
The same way that half of the planet is starving and the other half is dying because of obesity. It's not about a piece of chocolate with gold. Here, the whole meal was an unique experience. Everyone has the right to do as they wish.

I think that person was nuts. I would never spend that much for one person dinner. 😜 crazy.
Here I was thinking it was $600 for a bowl of water with a small bundle of herbs. Darn it... now I have to find other things on the internet to be annoyed about.
My only thoughts are it hurts no one, no one should be about their business and I, for one, am glad they shared the experience, some of it sounded awesome other parts not so much but still , I enjoyed the piece , its probably something I'll never get to do but I'm still glad to have seen it.
Rare and exotic ingredients. Good to see Sea Urchins on the menu. They are nothing but oceanic parasites. Geoducks are clams--no suprise that dish was not her favorite.
I am afraid I would have walked out at the 2nd item on the menu. however Dessert looked nice. I have had many wonderful expensive dinners. One nearly as much as this one above, but included thinly sliced (real) Koby beef in the most amazing sauce. This meal made this lady feel good. However it certainty is not the food for everyone .
To those calling this wasteful/selfish: When I travel on a one week holiday I stay in hostels and pay 10-30$/night. You probably stay in hotels and spend 100+, If I then took my savings and spent it on a few once-in-a-lifetime experiences, we'd have spent the same amount of money. But if one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences happened to be an expensive meal, I'd be selfish and wasteful, and you'd be a-okay? Do I get to call you ever staying in hotels instead of hostels wasteful/selfish, or is it only you who gets to decide how other people spend their money? Why go on holiday at all, if anything other than donating every penny you can to charity is selfish and wasteful. Direcy your ire at those with more money than they can spend not doing more, not on those hardworking people in the middle who scrounge and save for the occasional luxury, which they have the right to choose which they want.
Why are people trying to justify,Charging $600.00 for $10.00 worth of food by calling it Art ????... what s joke
My only question is how the f**k does one person eat that much f*****g food??
Your joking right, there wasn’t enough food there to fill an average person up

That being said, the food looks and sounds disgusting. But, that's just my personal taste. I'm a little more meat and potatoes myself, and I hate sushi
Indulge in? Indulge in? I’m barely hanging on as a single mom and 4 kids in college. I work my a*s off. $600 would have paid for a few of my kids’ books. The sights, the sounds. You people are out of touch!
We people are certainly not out of touch. I have made the choice to have children after I’m financially settled. I have also worked my a*s off for my degree, without much help from my parents. Worked two jobs while studying all throughout college and only with some scholarship help (which I also earned through hard work). Bought my own schoolbooks and paid for my dorms. I also work very hard at my current job. So, now I have good income and can live a little and indulge. Most of my friends and colleagues are in the same boat - plan ahead, work hard, and know where to save and where to spend. Maybe you’re a bit out of touch?

Was it worth the $600? Most likely not. This article was so uninteresting and not worth the space it was printed on. Of course, on the other hand, I did read it.
Forget the price. There isn't a thing in that meal that I would eat.

I think people who denigrate the way others spend their money or the idea that people should only enjoy the "working class" pleasures or they're a******s is another form of snobism. If you don't know someone you shouldn't make judgments on what their personality is like. Sorry but food for some is a really enjoyable experience. I am definitely NOT one of them but I know a lot of people who are and I think it's really unfair to the chefs who train very hard to do what they do and the people who simply enjoy the food. That's all it is.
Load More Replies...I don't care what it is or HOW much money people have, usually far more than brains I've discovered, but there is NOT a meal on this earth that is worth $600 for an individual, especially in ridiculously small servings. Now I'm not one who believes a portion needs to fill a dinner plate, but it SHOULD be more than 2 or 3 bites. The owners of restaurants laugh all the way to the bank each weekly about those dumb foolish gullible twits who believe the more they charge for the more crazy ingredients the better it is when in reality its not one ounce better than dozens of other ingredients. Its like women paying several thousand each for purses or handbags. I can't to it and still sit in church on Sunday. Wasting money like this is nothing but sinful and a sign of serious inferiority complexes and people buying buying items like this to TRY and feel important or respectable or belonging when it does none of these things. A purse for a $100 does the very same thing as one for $10,000.
It is not for you to count the money of others, or to assign "sin" to money spending.

The rich will eat anything as long as the price is out of reach of the common people. At one point, feeding someone lobster was considered cruel, now look how expensive it is.

$600 could get you a lot of many things. the point isn't in comparing numbers, it's comparing responsible actions. bag of coke could get you arrested, blowing the whole thing in the space of a meal will prob kill you, and at the very least tear holes your septum, destroy your nasal cavity, and definitely give you the worst come down of your living years. Oh and make you fiend for more enough to kill a brother. So, yeah. Sticking with delicious food might be a better decision, just sayin.

Well it's her money to waste how she wants. The vendor must be laughing all the way to the bank though.
Not one bit of that looks appetizing. But I am not a fan of fish, either. The cost is also ridiculous, but it's San Francisco, what can you say? Yes, I have had great food. I grew up in SoCal and my parents loved to eat out. Then I married a man who loves to find new places to eat. I've had it all. I still can't get over the price, though. Six hundred dollars could do so much to help others, especially in SF where income disparity is ridiculously huge.
I think the food all looked like c**p. For $600 I'd expect a meal to look the least bit appetizing. Instead she got a morsel of this, a bite of that. Even the gold didn't look good. I bet before the gold, the restaurant spent less than $30 on the meal. #gordonramesy wouldn't approve.
Spelling, spelling. A palate is in your mouth, a palette is for the artist and has paint on it. My goodness!
This is not proper food. This is expensive ponce food and a waste of good money. There are plenty of high quality restaurants where you get great food at a fraction of the cost.
for 600$ buck i can feed my family for almost a month. that's a total waste of money. people really don't know what to do with their cash. they are so many people on the street they would be happy to just have 10% of that money
You have a point...but that's true of most people. We all make purchases that make sense to our own lifestyles and income--but those same purchases would seem extravagant to someone of different circumstances.

All I can say is that P.T. Barnum is proven correct every single moment of every day ... "There's a sucker born every minute." The old adage, "A fool and their money are soon separated.", also comes to mind. If you learn how do do this sort of thing, even if you only use the skills to wow family and friends, then that's worthy. Then, there's the majority of the rest of the population on the planet, which goes wanting for any food, or even clean water, on a continuing basis. That a college student thinks this is a wise investment goes to show just how hollow the "education" industry has become - she's no doubt working on a "humanities" degree. It's not a liberal arts degree, because the historical meaning of that includes math and science at least as much as philosophy, literature, history ... and economics. This person will surely wind up begging for some government bailout later in life due to such early self-indulgence - Rome _is_ burning while many fiddle.
It's not an investment, it's an experience. She is supporting the chefs and restaurant industry. Her money *is* helping the economy. Clearly she is making at least enough to travel and dine, and will probably go on to make more. Nothing catastrophic about fine living. Only financially fearful people obsessively count and judge the money of others.

"What do I think?" asks somebody, after viewing what looked - mostly - like a pretty unappetizing bucket load of food. I think we have lots of money but no longer understand value. Possibly because our consumerist culture is conditioning us to feel this way about purchasing 'experiences' like this one - 600 bucks worth of food, top that people. Because, as the advertisers say, 'we deserve it' We are all going to get what we deserve, that's a certainty.
Sure, she can do what she wants, I wholeheartedly agree but still, she got absolutely fucken swindled.

My money, my dreams.
Also, unless you're the kind to destroy money (which is illegal), it's not wasted, merely moved.

Load More Replies...Wow! That is an amazing once-in-a-lifetime meal! I'm so glad you were able to enjoy that exquisite feast!
Wow, looks so amazing! I should put this on my bucket list. The real question now is, how much was the tip?? ;)
agree with Ed Mo--and i loved her comments! she's frank, funny and above all, HONEST! i'd like her for a friend!! She obviously loves food and has a food sense, WITHOUT the foodie pretensions! bravo!
Because you're a baby and you know nothing about life or food. Don't worry, no one is trying to take your Cheerios away.

Oh come on! I'm a pretty darn good speller and kind of a grammar Nazi too (only in my head) but that's just beyond the pale....lighten up dude.

If I were feeling particularly full in the pocket at the moment, I would be right there beside her. This sounds - and looks - like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm envious of it.
I'm so sorry! Your palate is truly missing out.
Load More Replies...Have it all you want :) McDonald's is actual, physical s**t.
Load More Replies...This looks fantastic, and it's likely to be well worth the money for those who can afford the indulgence.
Go you!
Load More Replies...One should savor their meal once in awhile. If your meal is a journey I would choose this over any McDonalds or Wendys, or oooh Taco Bell! I probably would of went to Ruth Chris Steakhouse though!
Load More Replies...Good for you! I SO get it! I spend almost all of my dispensable income (like you, saved) on dinomg out. I LOVE food so much, it's not sustenance , it's a celebration of life! If your ever in the Ottawa, Canada area, message me, I'd LOVE to share an e experience with you!!
Your joking right, there wasn’t enough food there to fill an average person up
Load More Replies...I have no problem with people posting something like this, especially if it's a once in a lifetime meal, and who cares how she spends her money? It's her money.
Load More Replies...I love good and great food, have had some in amazing meals in this country and others, but this all looked, quite honestly, disgusting to me and the presentations certainly lacked a great deal. Was it worth the $600? Most likely not. This article was so uninteresting and not worth the space it was printed on. Of course, on the other hand, I did read it.
Forget the price. There isn't a thing in that meal that I would eat.
tell that to the chef and all the people who trained for their careers

Thanks for the insight. Overall, good to know as I don't think those dishes made it worth that kind of money. But most of it looked cute....
Cute? Like you want to pinch it's cheeks and make it giggle?

I have the same hobby.... while some of these pictures need to be adjusted and more clear, most of the food looks great. I was at the nr.1 in the world last year in Italy, but was shocked on some dishes and the price as well.... read about it (can I do this?) at my website www.worldsbestfoodblog.com
I guess food this expensive comes in servings soo small you can finish it in one bite. And what's up with the gold topping? Are you expected to eat it?
if it was any bigger you would not be able to eat it all

Load More Replies...Funny how she compares this expense to a coke or meth addiction...is this type of food an addiction too?..plus $600 would get me a lot of coke...days worth..not just a 3 hr meal...lol
Load More Replies...It's all B.S. And Trump likes KFC and Mickey D's so money can't buy class. And there were things on the menu that were not appreciated either because of taste or personal dislike. $600 bucks for a c**p shoot.

Best comeback to pretentious fop like this.... 0554a09f02...b472cb.jpg
Load More Replies...I can't help but cringe at the pompousness of it all...it's not about the food anymore, it's about that giddy feeling you get when being served pretentious tidbits topped with octopus flakes (name of said octopus? balthazar seems appropriate) and knowing it makes you part of a select crowd of vain people who apparently only feel alive when dishing out vast sums of cash for the pleasure of being on first name terms with a heifer...if I had 600 to blow on sustenance, I'd get myself some real food, not something that looks like it might get lodged between two molars
