Japanese Artist Tightly Rolls Newspaper To Create Incredibly Realistic Animal Sculptures (11 Pics)

For most us, newspapers are for reading. But for Chie Hitotsuyama, newspapers serve a whole different purpose. Because as you can see below, the Japanese artist doesn’t use them to catch up on the sport and gossip. She turns them into incredibly realistic animal sculptures instead.

She makes them by densely rolling, twisting, and binding pieces of wet newspaper. The process is done entirely by hand and she even uses the colored print to enhance the contours and gradations of her subjects. From red-faced Japanese macaques to languishing lizards and even a giant dozing rhinoceros, Chie creates the most stunning sculptures from something that most of us simply throw in the trash. It’s a brilliant way of turning bad news into something more positive.

you can say what you want, the finest art often originate from Asia...I don't know if it's a special link to time and patience or something else. Really nice :)

I wonder if it isn't a greater appreciation for art on a cultural level. In America we tend to have a "get a real job" mindset. I think that anyone who can give their life over to their passion can do extraordinary things and find great personal happiness. Sadly, it doesn't always pay the bills.

WOW! The talent here is incredible.... who would have thought old newspaper could turn into something so beautiful? I applaud you Chie Hitotsuyama and others who may do this type of art.

Amazingly beautiful sculptures made out of paper with such accuracy that you don't recognize what they are made of. I just love it and picking a winner would be so difficult

I hope her exhibit comes to Dallas. I would definitely make time to appreciate her art.
