A converted industrial warehouse has been recently sold in Brisbane for a whopping $1.23M. You might be thinking “What’s the big deal?” but the house is already being nicknamed ‘The coolest home in Brisbane’ and once you see the inside, you’ll understand why.
The warehouse was built back in 1950 and looks like any ordinary facade from the outside but once you enter, you quickly see the industrial-style home in all of its glory. The huge two bedroom property has everything any hip person could want – vintage brick walls, concrete floors, exposed steel beams, and just wait until you see the bathroom! It even has a beautiful courtyard where you can “sip your Barista-made coffee while soaking up the sunshine,” said the property ad. Some other features of the property that attracted many potential buyers were a rare two street access and an open-floor design, meaning you can create any type of living space you want.

Where do you live? In our neighbourhood that's the standard for a three or four bedroom house. Depending on the age of the home, it's low. Townhouses go for between $7 and 800,000.
You are still lucky getting town house. In Singapore that is a price of mid class apartment where we need to return after 99 years (age of building).
In my early 20s I'd probably liked this bare-walled loft style. But now, being 10 years older, I'd definitely prefer something more like a home sweet home.

It is nicely renovated, this was nice to look at. But spending 0.8M$ on a building worth 0.2M$ does NOT make it worth 1 million.

Australia has for the ast few decades suffered under two scams designed by rich people for rich people - negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions. As a consequence rich people buy multiple houses to rent to poor people and have the tax payer and the renters pay for the costs, and make a profit to boot, and poor people pay ever more rent because they can't afford to buy their own houses in a market where investors continually drive up the price. One day Australia's real estate market is going to crash like the Dutch tulip craze a few centuries ago...

Is this Brisbane, Australia or Brisbane, California. If California, $1.23M is about right, maybe even on the low side. A few months ago, there was a house for sale for $1.3M in Mountain View, California, and it was a total tear-down. This house had been gutted by a fire and was selling as-is for $1.3M. It wasn't even renovated and updated like this one. Sold quickly too.

That is gorgeous! For those that don't know, it's called stealth housing, and it's becoming more and more popular around the world. There are several examples right in my neighbourhood in Chicago, where there's a lot of warehouse space empty. /// You get massive square footage, a very solid building (Chicago warehouses are brick, just like this), VERY efficient HVAC, and a blank slate to do what you want. It's like building a house inside an existing building. /// I would do this in a cold minute the next time we move (we retire in four or five years).

My first thought was "what about the heating costs?" I don't want to think about the gas bill in the winter trying to keep that place warm.
It's in Australia, so I'm guessing heating isn't that big an issue. Air conditioning would be very efficient, though. The ceiling is thoroughly insulated (I would have covered that, but that's a style thing) and the entire thing is solid brick with a concrete floor, which is naturally cool. ///// The windows are clerestory and can open to vent hot air out of the house at night, then closed to maintain the temperature during the day - that's a smart design. It's probably a LOT cheaper to cool than a standard house..

Does author even know the meaning of the word 'warehouse'? Apparently not, because large surface and high customisability are the basic traits of such a building. Even if we factor in the furniture, we still have sparsely furnitured house with no wall insulation, very little daylight, ugly ceiling and poorly made, impractical bathroom (general overhaul necessary if it has to look good). An all of this for 1.23 million? A brand new 4-bedroom, 300 square meter house in Brisbane suburbs can be bought for half of that price. I'm not saying that living in a warehouse is a bad idea, far from it - such buildings make great lofts, especially if you need some space for a hobby workshop or small business. But such buildings can be bought for way lower prices and commissioned to be built from scratch for even less.

Me! Stealth housing is awesome. It's all over Chicago. The city is full of unused warehouses that are in great shape. They're being bought up and used as single family homes.

The building itself is worthless. It's the lot. My parents live in a Silicon Valley city in CA. They bought this old run-down house before prices got insane (30+ years ago). The house is worth something like 15-times what they paid for it (and they still paid a lot back in the day). If someone bought the place, they'd do what is done to every house in that neighborhood that gets bought -- it would get torn down and something new built. It's just the lot that's worth so much -- not the house.
I am quite sad to see this being a "renovation" and "style" thingy. I had hoped for something like a technology startup using this, for example for something like vertical farms, striving for making the world a better place through applying technology...and obviously starting in affordable premises.
