This Is How NYC Central Park Would Have Looked Based On A Rejected Design From 1858
Whether you’re an NYC local or you’ve just seen it on TV, Central Park is sure to have left an imprint on your imagination. It’s such a fixture on the world map of ‘places everybody has heard of’, that it’s difficult to picture it any other way than how the park is today.
But did you know that the design of the Central Park was chosen by competition over 150 years ago? Out of the 33 possible parks, only the one we know and the plans for one losing design still exist.
A team of designers wondered what could have been. So they tracked down the sole surviving ‘losing entry’ of the great 1858 Central Park design competition and recreated it using the power of digital imaging.
What do you think of the results? Would you like to take a wander in Central Park that never was?

Share on FacebookAs a New Yorker, I have to say that I prefer Central Park as it is. I do like the English country estate-style gardens, too, but on an estate. The way Central Park is currently landscaped feels more like having a bit of nature in the middle of a big concrete city, especially in the northern part of the park. And I prefer Prospect Park in Brooklyn to Central Park if I compare the biggest parks in all of the 5 boroughs.
We could've done with some pictures about how Central Park looks like now to make a comparison. I know you can find it on the internet but it's still not common knowledge how it looks like now. Most people only know it is a park in New York. Beautiful design though, I like it better than how the park looks like today.
I was missing a comparison too. Never been there (and probably never will be), so an additional picture would have been nice.
Load More Replies...Some comparative pictures would be great. Not everyone has been to New York. We don't all know the real layout. Just some snapshots we recognise from movies that never giving you any true bearings unless you've really been there.
I wish they included some experiential eye-level perspectives! I'm glad they chose good ole FLO's design over this, which looks to put form over function. But maybe that's ust my landscape architect showing. More posts like this please!!
Oh. I just realized it doesn't look like that for real. I haven't seen it!
This is straight out of sci fi novel with all of those circles! It's cool!
It said what it COULD have looked like not what it does look like. Reading is helpful. Like what you're doing with this comment
