Photographer Captures People Who’ve Been Bullied For Having A Different Body To Fight Traditional Beauty Standards
Even though beauty is seen differently by everyone, there are some standards that many people chase after. Facial features, body types, eye/hair colors and textures – there are many pieces to this “beauty standard” puzzle.
Francesc Planes, a 22-year-old photographer from Spain, took it upon himself to encourage change. He started a photo series called “Normal”, in which the artist documents bodies that usually do not fit into the frames of “standard beauty”. Francesc captures people in their most vulnerable and pure state – naked.
The main idea behind this project is to celebrate the things that aren’t ‘normal’ but are beautiful and unique.

Share on FacebookThis was thought provoking. Even the tattoos which had an effect of being so polarizing in the comments. One thing that strikes me is this could be any of us. Today we could be unmarked, smooth conforming to standards of "beauty" and tomorrow we could be a burn victim or an accident victim and that smooth unmarked skin gone. Would our partners still love us? Would they be in love with us still? What if your child was born with these birthmarks. How would your heart feel about them? I wish we could just walk around wearing our souls on the outside.
If you’re interested in exploring this more, u might want to check out the short story “Liking What You See: A Documentary” by Ted Chiang. It’s abt a (fictional) procedure that makes surface looks less compelling, helping a person to see through the eyes of love instead. Raises great q’s abt lookism, biology, the value and drawbacks of beauty, and deciding which qualities we value. Cheers
Load More Replies...True enough. They were still bullied though, which isn't okay regardless.
Load More Replies..."Bullied" because of tattoos? How old were they when they got fecking FACE tattoos!? They clearly aren't Maori.
Especially the guy who is obviously a gang-banger, you usually get those tattoos after the first time you murder someone, so yeah f*****g "bullied" boo-hoo.
Load More Replies...I don't feel sorry for the tattooed lads because they made a conscious decision to have this done to their bodies. The others can't help their appearance - and in case anyone thinks I'm being judgemental, I have alopecia, am completely bald and know what it's like.
Seven billion people in the world and you show four? Spent a lot of time working on this huh? Bad tats don't count ; they were a conscious choice.
The other pictures in this series feature much nudity. Did you even bother to look for yourself?

Beauty standard as you name it Amaranthim Talon is an illusion created by some ellistists bitches to feel like they are special and to have some more reason to bully, harass, shame people THEY judge not up to this "standard".
"Beauty standard as you name it Amaranthim Talon is an illusion created by some ellistists bitches to feel like they are special" Tell that to any evolutionary biologist. What you are saying is scientifically inaccurate. By the way, you talk about how these "elitist bitches" are harassing bullies while you hurl bullying, harassing insults. Amaranthim could've worded that first part much more gently, but it was just an opinion, followed by niceties. You hurl personal insults of all sorts. That makes you a bully and a hypocrite.f
Load More Replies...Maybe beauty standards appeared because we keep tryng to look our best, but honestly even people with no birth abnormality have a hard time competing with the ideals atm. Because perfection lately is inside photoshop and cam filters.
Those are just normal human bodies, so I see no harm with them. Even the fatter lady, she still looks pretty cute. Tho I'd like to adress her to eat a bit healthier or even exercise, and it doesn't matter if she got more fat from genetics, I'm still worried about her health ;-; I really hope she won't get any heart failures or strokes
I have to totally agree about Alba. Like... the moles - whatever, but the hairy discoloured skin was outright gross for me to look at. Yeah yeah people will say "how dare you!" but that's just my visceral reaction - it looks like something harmful, even if it isn't, it's a natural human reaction.
Load More Replies...Way to fight for the beauty standards! People are beautiful just the way they are... I have one question though, because of my curiosity. What is alopecia? I looked at the picture and it has something to do with the head, but I am just genuinely confused.
An autoimmune desease that causes hairloss. Usually in spots, but sometimes fully including pubichair, eyelashes and eyebrows.
Load More Replies...This hits so close to home for me too.... I was bullied so horribly when I was a kid, just because I had two different colour eyes. (One is a light green and one is a dark brown)
Right on! Being yourself and comfortable in your own skin is what I consider true beauty.
A lot of people are talking about getting tattoos as a choice. Yeah, it is. And do I agree with you? Yeah. But I think that the point of that one is that it's not you, it's not your body and therefore your ideals shouldn't be pushed onto their body. It's still not right to bully someone over their choices. Sure, to talk to them sternly or have a healthy conversation is good - but never to bully. Bullying only ever hurts. After all, if someone was overweight (by choice of an unhealthy lifestyle), is it okay to bully them?
Hmmm, while I agree that it's not right to bully someone for a hair-color or a tat or a piercing or anything, really, I wonder about the gang-tattoos on those young men and the resulting "bullying". Is it really bullying, or are people around them just incredibly shocked by someone displaying their (in the case of the first young man) racist believes so outright? If a young guy in my class or in my work-environment would show those kind of tattoos, I'd try to avoid him, maybe be careful what I say around him, maybe stop conversations that I felt would be offensive to him or might entice him to speak his mind over a subject or a topic. So... that could develop into a bully-feel for the guy. I'm not so sure about how young he was when he got them, maybe the "choice" about the tattoo wasn't very informed. But still - they'd make me incredibly uncomfortable, and it would not as easily pass as with a skin-deformity or hair-color or ... dunno, maybe crooked teeth.

Load More Replies...Beauty isn't always health-realted, as there are people with minor cosmetic deformities who are otherwise totally healthy, and beautiful people with health problems, but "get better tattoos" is a very agreeable sentiment.
