The Sad Truth About Today’s World Illustrated By Steve Cutts
1.9Mviews
Art isn’t all fairytale photoshoots and landscape shots – it can also be done in sarcastic, sad drawings and act as catalyst of change. And Steve Cutts thinks that many things in the world should be different. Work shouldn’t be a grinding, soul-crushing rat race for the almighty dollar. Consumerism shouldn’t hold a vice-like grip on our lives. And social media, well, we need to throw off the shackles we so eagerly put on ourselves. Wouldn’t life be better with these social issues solved?
Steve Cutts is an illustrator and animator from London. Faced with the choice of working at McDonald’s or studying Fine Arts, he chose the latter. He worked at Glueisobar as the main storyboard concept artist before leaping to freelance work. Cutts makes videos and images that caricatures modern life and its ironic situations – he states that the insanity of humanity and global issues are an endless pool of inspiration for sarcasm and drawings.

This is so f*cking true.... shocking.
What's more shocking is that people are shocked about it, while supporting political, social and economic vectors that lead to this reality. (capitalism, individualism, atheism)
Atheism doesn't have a single thing to do with anything in any of the pictures. Are you high?
Atheism? What planet are you on? Capitalism and religion are blood brothers! Look on an An American bill of currency — "In God We Trust".
Capitalism is no worse than communism at its extreme. The far-left fights for an Orwellian society while the far-right fights to maintain the Oligarchy.
capitalism isn't necessarily bad, much like communism it's only a bad thing when it goes into extremes (as is the case with all things in life btw) individualism isn't something negative; it's a nessecity for people to be able to express themselves for who they are rather than just being a cog within a giant machine. a person can let his individualism shine & still perform perfectly as a part of a greater whole or entity (aka society), but should never be stripped of his rights to be unique, or he/she just becomes a sheeple atheism isn't bad; quite the contrary: the absence of worship towards a personafied higher force called God/Buddah/Allah means these deities cannot be used to justify immoral actions that are often excecuted by misguided fundamentalists. people shouldn't be religious (sense of following doctrine), they should be spiritual (sense of following what their soul tells them, "listen to your heart", not listening to others and what they force you to see as "right")
Don't feed the troll. It's becoming increasingly obese and only wants more.
"Atheism"? ... You're joking, right? ... We aren't the one saying "God will make everything better. Just have faith!"
Só the answer to fulfillment material and spiritual is socialism, collectivism and religion? These concepts are ~actively~ trying to rob us from the results of our efforts, enslave our spirits and destroy our livelihoods and our very lives. True capitalism is choice. Individualism is the means that we ourselves are our ends, and the guarantee that we won't end up being just a gear on a system that drains our blood and feeds us the clots left on the drainage tank. And organised religion nowadays is used by crooks to separate hopeless folks from the few scrips they still have, and as a "moral basis" for edgy psychopathic teens and mercenaries to hurl aircrafts on buildings, commit baroque atrocities and mass murder.
What is wrong with atheism is that it kills the inner man. Inner conscience is strong in people who believe a divine power.
Nothing wrong with capitalism...but crony capitalism and monopolistic behaviors by corporations that infringe the rights and natural liberties of others is allowed by the politicians because they've been paid off, and IDIOTS think "Their" guy is better. Republican and Democrat are opposite ass-cheeks of the big-govt statist ideology, and Democrats LOVE to tell you how much Republicans stink while they themselves are covered in the big brown skidmark of hypocrisy...republicans would do it as much if they had the balls.
Can you explain the atheism.? There's just no connection in the pictures to that accusation... And I know stereotyping people might your thing if your a bible thumper but, I don't see my self as a bad person. Just a FYI. I agree with these photos as well a reality we ALL face. We have different opinions that doesn't make us what we are... Humans. You and me we are both humans we are the same.... I'm not a devil from hell because only you believe that.... Good day sir.
What's wrong with atheism ?
I agree!
You know what? Capitalism and individualism founded the US. Read Rothbard. Read Von Mises. You're criticizing a philosophy you don't understand. It is the state that allows these atrocities to take place. The state, in partnership with criminals like the Bush family, the Rockefellers, the Morgans, etc subverted the beautiful concept that free people can pursue happiness for themselves without being subjugated. The state subjugates. Not individuals.
what the hell! You really know how to take things way out of context. This article has absolutely nothing to do with atheism. Also, there is nothing wrong with atheism. What's wrong with not believing in god? Also you ignorant boy, capitalism on a lesser degree is completely ok. Misinformed people don't realize the difference between a capitalist on the more social Darwinist side (strongest survive in the economy) and the capitalist looking to exercise his right to lassez faire (free trade with little to no government intervention). A capitalist can either be looking out for himself or himself and his fellow employees. Don't get the idea that a capitalist is just some money sucking scumbag because that's not the whole idea around capitalism. Socialism is practically the same thing as a capitalist in a sense that now the government controls trade instead of an individual company. Also, what's wrong with individualism? Go back to school or something and learn about politics and economics

Yes you are right! I am truly an evil capitalist indivudual who thinks god is a load of crap. Religion serve the powerful very well by keeping you in your faithfull ignorance. Dumbtard!

Pretty much spot on. Of course all the atheists get butt hurt.
The ironic thing is that without social media he wouldn't even be able to disseminate his views and artistry in the first place...
So, he's part of the loop.
It might shock you to discover that there are other ways without social media.
missing the bigger picture, hes using the social media in the correct ways as we should. for enlightment and to WAKE PEOPLE UP!
Arent we all
Not really... He isn't using social media for greed (hopefully). He's just using it to wake people up.
Can't fault his smart career move.
Art existed and was disemmknated long before social media. The Mona lisa predates memes by quite some time.
Back in the day there was the cartoon section in the newspaper? :P
Art existed before social media
Perhaps on the black market :)
You cant change the system outside of it.
And social media was brought to us by communism! Oh wait. Capitalism did that.
Good point. All of us that found our way to this page were asking the right questions. We chose to see it.
fair point
Unfortunately, that's the way it has to be until a change occurs. It's a little like saying "The ironic thing is that he warned his sleeping family that the house was on fire before he left the house."
Social Media's not all bad.
ever hear of a gallery?
i don't see any links to any galleries, but i do see links to his website, fb and twitter
Oh, come on, people. Yes, these are classic topics, yes these are thoughts and images we've all got in our heads everyday, but to bring those thoughts into life is the action, if they stay just in our heads, that's passive. No, these images aren't shocking or new, but they're pretty well made illustrations of problems we still ARE facing today and we will as long as we keep on unimpressingly disrespect the artists who at least are trying. As long as we have to face these problems, the fight is still not over. Keep up the good job. Stay creative. And keep in mind the meaning of "creative" relates to "creation", so the idea itself is not enough unless it's brought out into something concrete.
Yes! Couldn't agree more. Just saying "We're aware of these issues" doesn't mean that this artist shouldn't give his take on them! He's expressing his point of view on these topics.
The sad truth is actually that we believe things are like that. Those pictures depict just the perspective of the average joe and there is much more in the world than that. I find art like this to be just a form of exposing excuses that we use to feel good about ourselves because we don't take the time to think and build our lives properly.
None of this is original or thought provoking. Television is 'bullshit'... People getting on tubes are in a 'rat race'.. People walking around staring at their phones are 'zombies'.. Seriously!? You've just drawn common turns of phrase that you can see/hear everywhere. I get the same images in my head at 7 in the morning when I'm hungover on my way to the work- you know, the creative peak for a non-artist like me who pretty much has zero creative ability. Worst of all, these drawings come across as snide. His bio reads 'I could've got a shitty job just like the rest of you, but instead I did Media Studies at college and went on to become a super cool freelance artist, now here's some pictures of the fat brainless slobs you all are, hohoho' Cool, dude. I can't wait for the day McDonald's offer you a big contract to illustrate and you cave in (but draw it 'ironically')
Who said it had to be original? Someone gotta illustrate what we all think. And it's good to see how some have better ability than others to create. Maybe you should stop being hangover with you thought images and spread some inspiration rather then written junk ;)
But this guy isn't spreading some inspiration, he's just illustrating what we're already thinking. No one's thinking any differently. It's not creating a dialogue. It's not creating anything new, just rehashing clichéd ideas. I get hundreds of similar images popping up on my facebook newsfeed of similar images, often with bold statements crudely pasted on top in paint. Granted, this guy draws a lot better, so maybe he could put those skills toward something creative and different and truly thought provoking that starts an actual dialogue. Seriously, the image of rats getting on a tube at rush hour, that is so banal and obvious and has probably been done hundreds of times. None of these are new concepts, people have been commenting on rampant consumerism for almost as long as it's existed.
well said!
It is apparent you are neither an artist or creative, or you would know that nothing is original.
Well, I am a creative designer and at least it's too straightforward. There are definitely better thought provoking works than this one, which some average guy in office look upon and say: ''True!'' I like the artstyle, but I don't like the execution.
absolute bollocks. what an empty statement. fuck artistic critique, everything's already been done, there's no more original ideas. my arse.
true these drawings are nice drawn and all.. but this is just so fucking cliché.. maybe it's "Shocking" for some, but that in itself is shocking that people don't know how the world works.
There's nothing original or thought provoking about your banal observations either
having a bad day?
Lol....that's what I was thinking. ..someone's having a bad day....maxwell is really upset about this lol
Very rarely does social commentary coalesce with originality, that's not what the point of it is. You have a lot to say considering you seem to have completely missed the point. Empty vessels etc...
What a ridiculous load f tripe Maxwell. "Not creating a dialogue". There's hundreds of comments. You come across as though you believe, on some level, some of these images sum your personal situation up. And it stings you to feel like a parody.
ONLY ONE PAINTING OR ART OF ANY CONCEPT ALLOWED ! SOMEONE DECIDE ON WHICH FLOWER PAINTING TO KEEP; BURN THE REST.. <--- Your logic.
Nobody is original. Original shouldn't be a word anymore.
Golly, another artist schooled in the school of shock value. Totally not counterproductive. I get it bruh, you're turning the mirror on society. Also, pointing out issues that have been around as roughly as long as sentience doesn't make you make you come across as some dipstick hipster with nothing else to provide but criticism. As we all know every problem ever has been solved by just complaining about it .
its not even shocking. we've seen the same imagery thousands of times before.
It's the same, trite anti-consumerist propaganda churned out by liberal arts majors who don't have anything new to add to the conversation, so they just keep regurgitating the same tired rhetoric they learned in an attempt to at least look like they have something valid to say. It's uninspiring, unoriginal, and brings nothing new to the table in terms of sparking actual conversations about these very real problems facing society, and instead of trying to bring about any real change, it's just easier to churn out some mediocre art with thinly-veiled messages about how we're all "slaves to the capitalist machine, man." At least come up with something new and original to say.
Complaining about the attempts of changing things helps even more! Keep up the good work!
Golly, another self-proclaimed art critic in the comments section. Totally not counterproductive. I get it bruh, you're turning the mirror on the artist. How is this shock value and been around roughly as long as sentience? Least complaining via illustration >> complaining via illustrator's comment section. I think one person is closer to solving a problem than the other. The ironing here is delicious.
You're so edgy. I think you're my hero.
luckily we have you for constructive and productive criticism.
oh wow so gritty and true man my eyes are open everyone else is just a flock of sheeple every fast food place and business person is trying to murder the planet and our perfect free bodies and caring about our financial wellbeing is a sign of being a real rat of a person aw man
The art itself is tremendous, but honestly, the messages feel pretty thin/cliché. The visual puns ("rat race", "bull shit") just feel kind of tired. If art like this is going to hit hard, it's got to be as politically imaginative as it is artistically.
I feel the same
Do you guys really need to comment on this post (for it is pretty self-explanatory) or is it your need to be a part of it somehow - show your fake outrage because you gotta be heard, no matter how often the point has been made?!
Unoriginal, although I quite liked the bullshit one. For art like this to be effective it needs a sense of humour. For actual change to be made it takes seriousness. Stuff like this annoys me because some adolescents will see it and think they understand all there is to the Capitalist machine and that they're edgy and arty or some shit, I don't know ahah.
At least my kids taught me how to be a vegan :( but otherwise it continues.
Hey... that's awesome man!
I think it's great work. I also think some people comments are ridiculous.
Humans Beings are so stupid!! ...so undeniable Stupid ;))
if you chose you can change everything starting from yourself ...
So good
No. 13- The same image "The Grey men" described in the book of "Momo" written by Michael Ende... a must read for novel lovers..
"Blah blah blah death and suffering and pain for fuck's sake, man, buy a Stabbing Westward CD, comb your goddamn hair, and just shut the fuck up!!!"
The world may be like this today; but DO WE HAVE TO BE KEPT DOWN BY THEM?! NO!
the world in a nutshell
scary :'(
Powerful images.
sad but true... congrats for the amazing work!
Whoohoo - excellent
Lordy... This is so true
How wonderfully trite. First of all, don't be a sucker. This does not spread awareness beyond marketing the artist for profit. This is not activism - This will not change the world. It will stop no wrongs and create very few rights. I can see many of you are young -- Have you not figured out how the vast majority of people think yet? You all look at this and see it as how *everyone else* is the problem. Not you, no. Never you. It's everyone else that's trapped in the rat race for consumerism, living on their cell phones, eating junk food and swallowing pills, while enriching those corporations removing vital environments and taking the planet away from us. Some of you may be on trust funds. Where do you think that money comes from? One problem with people is that they confuse sameness as individuality and true individuality as unimportant. Part of the social engineering most of you/us have been born into. Want freedom: Walk away. Just go. Let the fools be fools and go be briliant
I LOVE THIS! I may have to disagree with the Roger Rabbit one. The hell/sh*t women get this day and age to nip, tuck, suck, stick, pull tight and god forbid gain a pound just to "keep a man". Seems the men get to blimp out....
Very well drawn and some even funny, but not very original in my opinion. And in that sense not very shocking either. I may be visually spoiled, but the symbolism used in these illustrations is a bit flat and worn out. Things like: putting the earth in a shredder, money comes out. Consuming products form large cooperations which come from a guys ass and at the same time pooping out money. A fat rich dude with a car full of money carried by skinny slobs,.. I like the zombies and the mice in the subway though ;).
But, can't deny the fact these illustrations take on some serious issues
A lot of us knew that these pictures depicts how our current life is, yet there is no change in it.
I have never ever seen anything portraid so perfectly, this is exactly how our lives are down to the last detail. Absolutely prefect, but these people do not see this I do every day and we will end up like these futuristic films they keep showing by people who can see like me the future of our world, pure greed is killing our world off.
Somehow its ironic that this is on Bored Panda... a website dedicated to wasting time
I am libertarian but this illustration suggest that is result of capitalism. No, it;s not result of capitalism! this result of socialism which learn people that can get something for free
And the most ironic part is the little strip of advertisement on the top of this page that says "The Bored panda iOS app is live! Fight boredom with iPhones and iPads here."
You don't get it.....
:(
Sick and true. How about some art showing something better? Encouragement instead of shit?
Spot on!
Strong messages without words. Simply awesome.
I was just impressed...so sad
All of this. All of it!!! Gold
http://trendistanworld.com/2019/04/24/sad-reality-of-todays-world/ Nice blog you have. Keep it up always inspire me
Just a bunch of cliches being recycled since the 90s at least.
"Blah blah blah death and suffering and pain for fuck's sake, man, buy a Stabbing Westward CD, buy a comb, just shut the fuck up!!!"
I'd still do Jessica rabbit
So fucking edgy.
Excellent and starkly honest, All is lost unless...
The double edge sword of technological slavery and the need to use it to promote its very essence.
On the fourth, the money eating one is getting richer and powerful the shit products eating one is getting sicker and poorer. So the products also get shitter because the consumer has less power to defend his own rights.
It's hard to face the truth head on
:(
Comment culture
so true...
There is NOTHING "sad" about this truth anymore than the die-out of the woolly mammoth or saber-tooth tiger. If trans fats and cellphone addiction kill off people too stupid to engage, screw 'em. They weren't meant to dilute the gene pool any longer. Natural Selection is the mechanism of a cruel universe.
There' nothing sad about this...this is Natural Selection on track. We are merely observing the die-out of those who fill a much-needed void.
Neat art but truths are only something one recognized within and change comes from within so... move along people
One where a really tiny puppy is being eaten by a bigger puppy, which is eaten by a small dog getting eaten by a bigger dog which is also getting eaten by a wolf, whom is being nom'd by a werewolf. With lots of blood and entrails. It's a bloody dog eat dog world.
As a vegetarian, I especially like the last pic.
so lets jump mdcdonalds....fuck the police.....and stop being rats.....untill the:::Burps::::: :::Farts::::::: "wheres my fuckin burrito damnit"
I love this. And I admire how the characters don't have eyes. Classy.
Maravilhoso........
Look to the left, then to the right. Isn't it like that?
I just don't agree with ones about phones. People act like were so attached to our phones that we forget about real life and stuff, no! When we use social media, what are we doing? WE ARE POSTING THINGS ABOUT OUR REAL LIVES. WE ARE SEEING THINGS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE'S REAL LIFE.When we do other stuff, most of the time it has to do with comedy. And comedy makes you laugh! And laughing makes us feel good. (most of the time)And if we feel good without hurting other people, why should it matter? Oh, and now your probably thinking "people use social media to put down others" Yeah, they do. And they would still be doing that in real life. It may be an easier way, but there's always a downside to something. It's not like that's the reason it was made.Oh, and then there are pointless games. If someone wants to play pointless games, let them play pointless games! Sometimes games are played to pass time, and sometimes people play games when the should be payig attention. But blame the player, not
the game.
I like your art . This repercussions here in Brazil !
We have the power to change this
I am now deperessed
Wonderful view of our present world shit
Neat art. A few of the illustrations feel reminiscent of Superfishal's style.
I love it.
very powerful
couldn't be more 'on-the-nose.' not even the tiniest bit of subtlety or nuance
This was really good!
I once applied for a job at MacDonald, but didn't qualify. Perhaps should try fine arts.
Bleh. Those cats driving those zombies look like they're having the time of their lives, though! Who cares if the zombies are sad, they're dead! Let the cats play! Every single picture in this article just made me laugh my ass off. Losers are unhappy? Poor losers. Lol.
The iPhone illustration is the most amazing and hard-hitting one...
Very shocking and very scary as it is so close to the truth...I am always optimistic and see more good than what is portrayed here. However, I hope it would shock people who need to, to come in out of the dark.
One might of course interpret these pictures as him saying the devices them selves have a bad affect on people, but what I think he's trying to say is that it doesn't have to be that way. It doesn't mean that we can't or shouldn't use smartphones and internet. It's not ironic that he uses the internet to make his art available to others. He is trying to tell us that we have a lack of moderation. He might have a lack of moderation himself. Doesn't make his attempt to point it out less valid. You can shout the messenger, but the message remains the same.
More
the story of america, not the whole world
This is not the story of this world, its the story of america -.-
I think what these artist have inadvertently done is outline not the sad truth about the world today but human society and it's developments shortly after moving from a paleolithic to a neolithic way of life. Some tme after the first human settlements we lost many of our egalitarian roots. As civilations formed the world became a much larger place which needed to be managed by a vast network of social control systems which although have evolved over time are still built on the same floored system better suited for a large disconnected world. But the world is not large and disconnected anymore. Yes the environments we live in are vast and varied but we are by in large interconnected in ways we have never been before. In know it seems like we live in a world geared against us, but the problems dipicted here have existed in some shape or form for thousands of years. Difference is now people are smart enough to notice and real change is happening on a scale it never has before.
Whoa! Hard hitting stuff! This really hits home
Sadly, but it is true...
Whatever. There's no reason to be so negative. How about something more positive. Each year more and more children are moved out of poverty, more impoverished nations are getting education and fresh water.
Like this comment if you read this on your phone.
True.
Jessica Rabbit is still hot though...
The Roger Rabbit one is really old. I remember to saw it several years ago. And... meh...
Meh. People act like it's difficult to criticize and see ugliness in the world, but I really don't think it is. It's exponentially easier than finding hope, beauty, and potential. Some of these are clever analogies, but as a whole they're underwhelming. This is just a guy whining about issues that most people are completely aware of... And I think it's an immature point of view to completely ignore the other side of incredibly complex systems like commerce, economy, or technology. The world is not divided into "good" and "bad". The same technology that enslaves some people saves other people's lives. This guy draws business as if everyone in the world is actually an artist who gave up. Some people prefer numbers and structure, that is a passion to some as much as art or music is to others. I mean, I'm just saying - What a bummer this dude must be to hang out with.
Clever. Not original, but okay.
the last one.. people should realise how much damage are they doing by consuming meat...
wow!!!!!!!!!! i bet you hate carnivores lol
Brutally honest.
Maxwell is right, the majority of us will admit its true. But how many of us will actual try to change ourselves, never mind the whole of society. And the bigger question. "OK Steve, you've illustrated the problem, but what is the practical solution? An Apocalypse? We are flawed. However, we live in a better connected, more socially conscious, open for the most part societies where we live longer, work less, play more and help others more than at any time in the recorded history of man. We know communism doesn't work, that social experiment failed. Neither does pure capitalism or the rule of law without compassion and regulation over the law makers. Yup, everything in your drawings are true. But they are of no value because they don't solve anything. We are all different when we are born - we are born EQUAL under the law but no one person is exactly the same as the other. We have weakness and strengths. I pray each day someone can draw the solution. Love God, love each other.

Sad, but true.
This is f***ing reality, great work!!! I love the colors you've used!!! Keep going!!!
Its a bit much. He must love social media too. Spreading his view.
That is so true, people cannot stop eating garbage and won't even think what's in their stomach for years, yuuk!
all very 'HUMANE' ...........
Sadly this is a very true depiction of where we've gone...
I always admire this guy when the first time i saw MAN - STEVE CUTTS
And how many of you are going to change anything about it?
Opens your eyes. I feel bad for those who feel nothing whilst looking at these. Powerful stuff
"Art isn’t all fairytale photoshoots and landscape shots – it can also act as catalyst of change." - Someone get this guy a Pulitzer.

Spot on reflection of today's world. Scary and devastating, yet so true...
I agree with every picture!!!
Aww, the rat caught in the trap still has a piece of uneaten cheese that he brought to work in his briefcase.
Beautiful illustrations of the reality of today's lifestyle. We need more creative reminders like Scotts!
wow! this is so true. I've never thought of life this way. Coincidentally, I just started sophomore year of high school.
This is super thought provoking, we are all bought and paid for! Coincidentally I just started sophomore year in high school.
sad but true
shocker... obese people featured as greedy glutton. And thin people are slaves to their phones... ugh how about some originality.
Coming from a comment that has been literally made half a dozen times here, that's hilarious! I supposed we should give up on illustrating anything that's been painted before ? Man, some people love to bitch.
Good interpretations. Nothing wrong with doing cliché phrases, IMHO. Is no different than 100 people drawing roses...they will all still have unique styles. They're beautifully drawn and sadly true. My favorite is the one with the guy who's become his couch.
This is awesome and sadly so true...
Why are people being so condescending about the satire element in his work? His work is thought provoking. Its the way YOU perceive it.
waw
"beauty sleeping in the lap of horror".
Nothing news to me. It is awesome art and direct.
it's sad because it's true!
So much negativity.
Disturbing, just the way it was intended
I don't see myself in any of those illustrations... I must be OK?
Wooowww, another "provocative" artist who hates captialism. Teach us how making cartoons will support the global economy O Enlightened One! And who even eats KFC anymore?
Woowww another "provocative" artist who hates capitalism. Teach us how making cartoons will suffice the global economy O Enlightened One! And who eats KFC anymore?
I understand this. But let's give credit to where (and who) it's due. Millennials; We don't eat fast food and we want to be informed on where our food comes from. Also, a lot of us are working in industries we actually want to be in; the outstanding amount of student loan debt should be a nod to that.
Pure and utter bollocks! if you think this is what life is about you need to end it all now and save the rest of us from your whining and moaning. This bit is taken from above, "Steve Cutts is an illustrator and animator from London. Faced with the choice of working at McDonalds or studying Fine Arts, he chose the latter. " pure crap, the bloke would be some sort of moron to pick McD over fine art and there he is telling us what a shite world we live in. I wonder though, who paid for his fine art studies? mummy and daddy i'd say,
Gfhg
nice artwork, but tons and tons of shallow, overused clichés.. this is the world as seen by a 14 year old depressive child
How pitiful and sad this artist's life must be if he looks around this amazing planet at amazing people and amazing things, and this is what he sees.
