I’ve had quite a few months of inactivity in the studio and I wanted to make something bright and colourful to make me excited about art again. I procrastinated by googling ‘colourful birds’ and started a Secretary Bird – I know, not colourful but exciting with its amazing head feathers that resembled a fancy wedding fascinator. But then I got fed up again, too much white. Far too much white…

Then after posting a few photos of my old work, to keep people interested and to show new page fans birds that they might have missed, I was drawn to my hummingbirds. Both of those were made by me to ‘hang in the air’ as though drinking nectar. I wanted to do this again but use a different method to make this one stand.

The tail feathers of the Jamaican Hummingbird was a perfect way to do this. I love this bird, the greens are so vibrant and sparkly. What next? That’s always the big question!
