This Photographer Photographs Farm Animal Like No One Else

Photographer Rob MacInnis gathers barnyard animals that we selected for consumption and production, and turns them into majestic portrait subjects.

Everything started when Rob came back from a long journey through South America. Taking photos in places that suffered from extreme poverty made him rethink photography’s role in his life and society: “I had a tough time dealing with my relationship to photography after this trip,” Rob told Bored Panda. “I felt it irresponsible to ignore the exploitative aspects of photography, especially when making artwork in such a privileged position. I found that photographing animals enabled me to critique both myself and the photographic field.”

MacInnis said that working with animals wasn’t very different from working with people. “You’re invading their space so need to set some boundaries and develop trust,” he said. “At times this is easy and other times impossible.”

“I met a great deal of patient, helpful and trusting farmers and we did what we could with what we had. What I did have was a decent amount of time which was quite necessary. Sometimes just to get the right head shot I would have to wait for an hour just for animals to calm and begin to trust me.”

Are these photoshopped? Could never get animals to stand that still all at once!

The group shots totally are. The animals don't even have the correct shadows and some look like they're slightly hovering over what they're standing on, because of it.

''Animals that we selected for consumption and production..'' , and now we should ''enjoy'' these photos? Sad.

People are saying these are Photoshopped, but I contacted the photographer because I wanted to buy one (I couldn't afford it) and he told me it took several people working with him and a couple of days to get the animals in place and where he wanted them. So...is he lying to me even though I'd already told him I couldn't afford his work? I don't think he is. I believe he works with his team. Otherwise why would the photos be so astronomically priced?

I SAY NO!!!-- to perpetuating the notion that farm animals live in this idyllic, sweet hay smelling, cozy barn world. In truth- well I really don't know the whole truth-most animals are jam packed into stalls with little room to move and live a life of horror. They are valued only for their carcasses. Perhaps run a series of pictures like these-showing animals as the sentient beings they are-along with photos depicting the horrible truth of the animal experience in the US.

The portraits of the single animals are gorgeous. I think this photo set would be a lot better without the group shots, tbh. Idk, the group shots are photoshopped and obviously so. Idk, maybe they just look really weird to me, because the artist didn't take the time to add shadows? Without shadows they kind of just look like they're slightly hovering over what they're standing on. The background/foregrounds also have a different lighting than the animals and that's throwing me off as well. I'm not trying to sound rude, I just think all the extra is too much, honestly. He's an amazing photographer and he doesn't need to Photoshop group shots, because his portraits are more than great by themselves!

Goats are so much fun to watch . It's like they try to make humans laugh. I'm a big fan of baby lambs , too. They look so clean & are an affirmation of life.
