Rape And Consent Explained In 7 Simple Comics By Alli Kirkham
One of the most controversial points in the modern discussion of rape is consent – by failing to communicate, rapes can sometimes occur without the rapist even understanding what they’ve done or why the victim feels the way they do. Comic artist Alli Kirkham helped clear the question up with a series of 7 comics that illustrate sexual consent issues with everyday situations that are easier for everyone to understand.
For most, the word “rape” conjures up images of shadowy hooded figures sexually assaulting people at night. Violent criminals don’t concern themselves with consent, which covers the uncertain ‘grey area’ that many people are confused about. According to RAINN, an anti-sexual-violence organization in the U.S., 47% of rapists are the victim’s friend or acquaintance and 4/5 of assaults are by someone known to the victim. Men and women need to educate themselves about consent to avoid crossing each others’ boundaries without even knowing it.

This is so accurate. I can't stand the idea some women go through sexual situations like this.
I just find it so damn sad that you actually have to point stuff like this out for people to get the point... =/ I SO wish they never reproduce and that they compete for a Darwin Award! =/
Brilliant! And now we have to teach our children to make a difference in the future.
Nothing but a bunch of strawmen arguments and anybody who actually thinks society thinks like this needs to take off their paranoia lends.
I have yet to meet anyone who does not understand the concept of rape. I have met very few people willing to openly discuss the topic, which I think is far more important than explaining a concept anyone above 8 years old understands. Also, rape is not only against women, it is a gender neutral term.
Certainly in the UK, legally only a man can rape a woman or another man so only men are legally capable of committing rape by definition. When women are the perpetators, than falls under a different crime - sexual assault, of which there are different definitions.

There WAS consent during the act. Then the accuser decided to lie about it. By the way: only 1-2% of rape cases in the USA are false. That's less that pretty much any other crime, including auto theft.
Load More Replies...Bit juvenile for a complicated issue, but having said that, there are some that might STILL not understand.
That’s for sure just look at the comments and even more so the replies

There is a huge difference in deciding youve changed your mind in the middle of a card game, and waiting til youre in the middle of having sex, and suddenly saying, stop, i decided i dont want to have sex. Thats like being in the middle of a roller coaster ride, and stopping it as it is going down its big dive, and saying, ive changed my mind, let me off. I dont want to finish this ride.
but please... watch pulp fiction till the end you will not regret it...
So many people in the comments saying that "rape isn't as big an issue as people say". Over half the people I know have been sexually harassed or assaulted, myself included. These comics aren't meant to explain rape, they're meant to spread awareness. They're also for the victims, showing that what happened to them was wrong even if they didn't realize. I had to explain to my friend once that yes, her boyfriend having sex with her while she was drunk, and forcing her to have sex with him because they had done it before, was indeed rape. And no, this isn't telling people to hate men. Did you notice that the people in the comics were all genders? If you're a man and you feel like it's targeting you and saying all men are like this, then you need to step back and reevaluate. Because a majority of men can realize that it isn't about them, it's about rapists.
There is a new standard in this world.... the standard of intelect. Can you blame me for not understanding those when I didn't got the proper education? Anyway, I don't find a solid association between those comics and rape. Please explain.
The one of the car kind of happened to me. I told my landlady's husband he could enter the house to see a certain problem on Monday, and that he could use his keys if I wasn't home. He entered without telling me on Wednesday. When I said I was annoyed that he entered without telling me, he said "but you said I could enter the house using my keys"... YES, ON THAT MONDAY! NOT WHENEVER YOU WANT, WITHOUT EVEN TELLING ME! That Wednesday, for a coincidence I came home late. If I didn't come home late, I would have been having a shower, and he would have entered while I was having the shower. How embarassing would have been?! Doesn't he understand that he can't just enter like that someone else's private space?
P.s.: Just to say that certain concepts apparently aren't that obvious.

Wow! All I can say: Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant way to show the absurdities around common understanding of consent around sexuality. Thank you! I have to admit I got little but triggered. I wish that understanding of consent around sexuality would be widely known and understood (as it's brilliantly explained in these comics)
I have yet to meet anyone who does not understand the concept of rape who is older than 8. Has society not been reduced to the most easy to grasp concepts already? This seems extremely insulting to the reader's intellect to assume they need this explained, which I am quite certain they do not. What is not common is people being comfortable discussing rape openly. I think a comic encouraging people to discuss it and not keep things so hushed, would be far more beneficial than explaining an extremely well understood concept.
Numbers 5 and 6 bring back too much and I'm 77. But I was too young when they occurred to realize anything but the awful feeling. Thank heavens that was the both the beginning and the end of them.
I believe this is more eloquent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKn96LdbRl0
They remind me of the ad made by the British police about cups of tea to talk about consent! Simple, absurd but close to what victims have gone through.
And women, it's not just men, as much as people like to think that.
Load More Replies...Brilliant. Teach all boys. Even if they would never cross the line themselves, they can educate other boys/men when the need arises.
And where is example when somebody want something but later regret it?
You mean the 1-2% of false rape cases? The false accusations that are actually _less_ for rape than for pretty much any other crime? The false accusations vast majority of which will be dismissed after a single day of investigations? The false accusations that will reach a courtroom MAYBE ten times per year, on a grand total of 80.000+ rapes in the same period?
Load More Replies...Did they actually say "I will have sex with you if you buy me a drink"? Otherwise just buy the drink and try and be a gentleman instead of an entitled d******d. How gross must you be if you have to ply women with alcohol before they'll f**k you. What you are looking for is a prostitute - so find one.
Load More Replies...(1) Blue revoked consent halfway through. Orange ignored that. (2) Yellow assumed that Purple's consent a WEEK ago was still valid as consent TODAY. He didn't bother to check for consent. (3) Same as 2, plus Cyan was asleep at the time. Sleeping people can't consent. (4) Same as 2 - Black didn't consent about "having sex" that day, only "some day". (5) Being a wife is not an automatic consent. (6) Consent is not "owed". Black doesn't have any obligation towards Olive Green. (7) Blue didn't ask for Yellow's consent - he just assumed it. In short: congratulatios, you have proven yourself to be ignorant of what consent is.
Load More Replies...The problem is, a lot of people DO believe that they "owe" their partner some sex for what "they did for me". It's a tactic a lot of abusers use on their victims.
Load More Replies...why would you say this is b******t unless it hit a nerve for you. Maybe it's a language barrier thing?
