Powerful Portraits Of Auschwitz Survivors Mark 70th Anniversary Of Their Liberation
With the approach of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by Soviet Red Army troops on January 27th, 1945, Reuters photographers got together to take portraits of Auschwitz survivors who are still alive today to tell the stories of their terrible ordeals and ensure that what happened during the Holocaust never be forgotten.
Located in Nazi-occupied Poland, the Auschwitz concentration camp is estimated to have killed 1.1 million people, most of whom were Jews. Of the 200,000 inmates that were freed in 1945, about 300 are alive today.
Many of the survivors in this photo series are Poles who were sent to Auschwitz during the Warsaw Uprising, but the Nazi government sent inmates to Auschwitz from all over Europe. Many chose to post with photos of the families they lost as well.

It saddens me greatly to think, and actually see, that human beings can and are treated in such an inhumane manner, and it still happens.
I am Jewish............I see the antisemitism that has become evident of late. I cried watching this and I thank you for printing it.
Hitler was the worst man to ever have lived. He doesn't deserve to even be called a "man". He was the Devil, totally evil.
We have to make sure this never happens again! such brave & sad survivors. It is a horror that people think & say this never happened.
very emotional and stressful especially for those who lost someone in warfare..
Horrific but we haven't learnt anything. Genocide is still going on right now all Around the world. There is so much hatred and intolerance
These are the last of the any survivors from this atrocious event. flesh and blood is proof of their losses. Humanity must not forget.
Sadism, horror. Dare we pretend it is not far from the surface even now?
Lamentablemente estas muy desinformado. Averigua, aprende, despues opina.
Load More Replies...After all this time it is still painful. My Father fought and was wounded to help freedom and those who suffered. We can never forget!
Please, people -- this is happening right now to Christians all over the world!
Whoever is comparing the animal to HUMAN, has the exact same mindset of what hitler was thinking. So wrong!
A moving tribute to a few of the survivors. Peace to those who suffered
These are the faces of people condemned to death because they were considered sub-human. What do they look like to you?
Incredible story's and the pictures are wonderful and this must Never Forget!!!
Never never forget - in this time NOW in the world I see it repeating !!! If the good do nothing!
One of the men displays his number tattoo. One lady, incredibly, wears her "striped pajamas". Who new they were anything but B/W? Many survivors never told their families, even their own spouses and children. They wanted to forget. I applaud these brave people, for doing this photoshoot. Many thanks to the photographer for posting this.
Thankfully sooner rather than later we'll be able to live life without having to repeatedly listen to the same story over and over and over again by the same people. Sometimes, in life [s]hit happens .... and to those it happened to I am truly sorry.... but bellyaching about it every other bloody day becomes monotonous having to listen .......It won't bring them back from the Camp ovens or pits filled with lime. Remember them as they were prior to Adolf and his cronies coming to call.

Why didn't you write Germans did this? Nazis did not come from the Moon. We owe the survivors at least the truth-naming their oppressors.
And where did those Nazi people come from? The Moon? Why can't you write it was Germans who did it?
I think that we must not forget this and ask ourselves why million people in the world still suffer and starve cause their religion...
Never happen again? It's happening right now somewhere in the world. What shall we do?
My grand father was a war's prisoner in a camp. He has never evocated this period but I take it within since my birth like a heritage !
You can't believe that this has happened, but it happened in a horrible reality. And worse is that may be it is not over - May God help us!

My mother was of German heritage and claimed that "this never happened". I could never understand her reasoning. Never!
Your mother says true. Holocaust is a tragedy in the literature only but not in the real world.
Load More Replies...also, after glancing the text below photos, how one lady could be 19 years old when sent in cc and now she's 90, other was 18 and now is 89?
What's wrong with this? If you were 19 in 1944, you would now be 90 years old (71 yrs ago). And if you were 18, you would now be 89.
Load More Replies...they did the Germans who built these camps in Poland and murdered people there mostly Poles Germany now write Polish death camps-criminals
I don't pity any of them, now they do the same on palastine people. So i don't feel sorry.
You are a brainwashed, low-info fool if you believe that.
