Everyone needs a bit of a challenge to spice up their travels and create really special experiences.

This is a part of my summer plan for a flying start (inspired by the book “203 Travel Challenges. Explore the World. Discover Your Inner Self.”).

1. Jump into a warm, open-air mineral pool while it’s snowing. Don’t forget to take a towel to dry yourself off as quickly as possible as you climb out of the pool. Also take your favorite warm drink in a thermos for pure bliss (coffee, cappuccino, tea and rum?).

2. Go offline for 24 hours. Lock away all your devices or go in a place where there are no mobile networks available.

3. Organize a night picnic with lanterns or candles.

4. Bathe in a waterfall and enjoy a free shower from nature.

5. Celebrate reaching a mountain top by opening a bottle of champagne – this is an achievement worthy of a proper celebration!

6. Learn to make fire without matches or lighters. Then, step up your game and build your own shelter.

7. Sleep in the wild on a weekday. Bring a sleeping bag and head to the nearest wilderness for a night under the stars. In the morning, wake up early and go back to work on time. Everyone will envy your energy.

8. Discover a beach in the middle of the city. The closest sea coast is 200 km (125 mi) from Paris but that can’t stop the French – for four weeks from late July, several tons of sand are pumped onto the Seine’s banks to create sandy beaches. Other cities with beaches in their centers: Brussels, Amsterdam, Vienna, Berlin.

9. Set out on a journey with only one point on your itinerary – the starting point. Sometimes it’s good to leave things to fate. And fate always has interesting ideas about who and what to introduce you to.

10. Forget your camera. Instead of seeing a place through the lens of your camera, forget it at home and just enjoy.

11. Get lost on purpose. Hop on a bus in an unknown direction. Get off at the last stop and explore the surroundings.
