On Monday, August 21, 2017, millions of people were staring at the same thing through doofy glasses, as they tried to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse. Not only that, they also immortalized the awe-inspiring moment in photos, and Bored Panda has collected the best of them in case you missed the phenomenon or can't get enough of it.
A total solar eclipse covered a narrow portion of the United States from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. And a partial one was visible across the entire continent of North America, as well as in parts of South America, Africa, and Europe. This was the first time since 1918 when North America experienced the path of totality from coast to coast.

This photo belongs to me. Please leave me credit https://www.instagram.com/andrew.studer/
Here is one from Inman, but I was outside totality. Nice to see what I would have seen. But God has nothing to do with it. Sorry revision-5...e7fc09.jpg
People who say disparaging remarks are just JEALOUS, period! This photo was well planned in advance & executed perfectly. BRAVO to a tremendous job Andrew Studer!
Why is everyone calling this photo fake or photoshoped? I'm starting to believe that I'm not really real now lol Give this person props or move on.. Such haters smh

Love this one! Love the burst of light Ray's. Great picture!
Fake photo. Notice the round balls that make up the lens flare effect. Those are actually small images of the Sun. How are they possible if the Sun has been completely blocked out by the Moon? lol People, use your brains and quit believing all of this Fake News BS. This is not even what a total solar eclipse looks like!
Yip, this one is very obviously fake. It looks completely different from all other eclipse photos for a reason. Unfortunately people are flipping out over this one.

People parked in my lot with chairs, umbrellas, etc. I went out and announced that the eclipse had been cancelled, six people started to pack up and leave. One old woman said "Well, s**t! all the way from Cincinnati for nothing!" This is my most memorable moment of the eclipse.
All the holes in the tree canopy act like little pin hole cameras and reflect the crescent of the sun in each sun spot coming through the leaves.
There were thousands of crescents projected onto the sidewalk through the filter of shady trees.
Things like Jim Rich's comment make me sad. Our schools need to teach more science. Of course, it was all over the news how an eclipse happens. Why don't people educate themselves?
This Was Undoubtedly The Most Fantastic Natural Phenomenon I've Had The Honor Witnessing
Omg wow this is amazing you guys in america are so lucky to see the eclipse!! :0
Yeah, I saw one when I was a child and it's an amazing experience. Too bad the next one is going to take years to appear.

Way to steal someone else's work. The photographer of that eclipse (not the rest of the photo) belongs to Chris Knight.
Interesting. How did you find out this information? I'm curious to know.

Do you know if there is a difference in the geomagnitism of the sun's effect on the earth, as the moon begins to and eventually covers it?

YES ! that is the thing I found more fascinating. The way the shadows changed from normal. Did you notice that the curve changed to the other way when the moon got to other side?

Proof of Einstein's Theory that light bends. With the sun totally covered, the light is bending around the moon.
Not many "likes". People are not understanding the beauty of physics that make this possible.
Boogyman footprints! Move immediately!!! Hide the women and children. Save yourself before the next eclipse come along. I have a slightly used pair of eclipse glasses for sale....cheap!!

Makes you wonder what their motivations are, doesn't it? Why fake something like that? What does anyone get out of it?
Load More Replies...Yeah; it would have been an awesome picture of the sun if that damned rock hadn't gotten in the way!
Load More Replies...I was blessed to be in Varanasi on July 22, 2009 to see the solar eclipse. It was one of the places where complete viewing was predicted although it was not the best place. A village in Bihar was the hot spot in India & prediction was that China will have the best view. I & my elder daughter decided to take a chance at Varanasi & we were not disappointed. We had never seen so many people in our life. There were millions of people right from the Mughal Sarai railway station to the Ganga Ghats. We could manage a vantage point & were ready to shoot the eclipse. Unfortunately it started pouring from the dark cloudy skies. Surprisingly the moment eclipse started clouds over the sun cleared out & rain stopped. I could photograph the whole eclipse, every stage of this amazing surreal natural event. I will never forget the darkness at the time of totality & a big “”AHH”” coming out of awestruck millions watching the event. It was interesting to photograph the people taking holy bath & praying; collarge-5...1d58e1.jpg
The thing I like about this is that you don't see many *long* exposures of totality. Seeing the face of the moon there is a little jarring, because we're used to high shutter speeds so you capture the black of the night sky around the corona and, necessarily, keep the dark side of the moon completely underexposed. This is very unique, and tells a compelling story. Well done!

The Solar Eclipse's Totality Only Lasted For Minutes In The Path That It Occurred. Giving Photographers A Small Window Of Time To Capture Something Most Of Us Will Most Likely Never See Again
Hm... that top climber bears a striking resemblance to the one pictured in photo #2 of this list.
Ugh this is so low quality though :( Hours of planning must have went into this, shouldn't they at least, like, rent a better camera [or something like that]?
What happened? Someone got me drunk and watched me walk the tightrope?
The Sun And The Moon
Did those people stand absolutely still during this time-lapse photo?
Isn't it about 3 hours from beginning to end of the eclipse? They stood there for 3 hours, never moving? Doubtful.

If people need those borders to find where they are, they need to study their geography a bit more.

No, I'm from PA. And I repeat, if people need those border markings, they need to study their geography.

The Corona Of The Sun Is Visible During The Totality Of The Solar Eclipse Viewed From Dallas, Oregon
I met one Gent who drove from Mexico to see it with friends just above Galena Summit in Idaho near Sun Valley/ Ketchum, at 9,200 feet. Another Gent I met at the summit drove from Phoenix so they both beat my own 14+ hours driving including one 3am start for the final leg, given the path I had to modify a few times along the way, to avoid both traffic jams plus wildfires' road closures en route, from the Seattle area. Wide-looping north north-easterly via Northern Idaho and the edge of Montana, etc. I've done some FB posts including a great article from The Atlantic on "Benefits of Awe" expanding on those great points with my own long-studied opinion of such widely-shared events having huge "Our Shared Humanity" power! Thank You for your sharing, helping prompt some of my own thoughts that hopefully others will also find interesting.

I agree. The clouds add a spooky element to it and you almost forget that's the sun, not the moon in a crescent shape like that.
Load More Replies...That is so dramatic. When they put out the 2018 calendar of the eclipse, this picture should be among some of best ones. Good show!!
It's still beautiful, hard to imagine it being the sun and not the moon.
Get yourself to totality. Partial eclipses are interesting, but don't compare to totality.

"The Great American Eclipse"? Did you all buy it or create it or something?
That's funny. Yeah. We bought it from the Sand Man, who actually stole it from Tinker Bell.
Load More Replies...Pretty sure no one in this time got to choose whether we called ourselves Americans or United Statians. So please go tell the condescending white men in the past to not go with that, because I don't think a re-naming could happen unless someone paid the current Government a ridiculous sum of "campaign" funds.
We live in the United States of America. Should we be Unitedstatesians (how awkward) or Americans? Other countries such as Mexico and Peru have easy ways to refer to themselves. Why not get upset about something important like animal abuse?
Actually, the word for a citizen of the United States of America in Spanish is "estadounidense", which translates into somehing like unitedstatians. Nothing awkward on it
Load More Replies...They are referring to the total eclipse. There was a 70 mile wide path, only in America (from Oregon to South Carolina) or if you prefer, The United States.
Load More Replies...It confuses me so much that you call it American eclipse because i live in America too... the continent. How condescending you have to be.
So, this thread, smh. I know that the U.S.(a term you probably don't like either since there are other "United States of" ) isn't the only country on the continental of America. But, we tend to refer to ourselves as Americans, rightly or, in this period of history, increasingly wrongly. I know some Canadians who take exception with our using that term, and others who use it themselves in referring to U.S. citizens and residents. Anyway we in the U.S. are overwhelmed that for this eclipse the path of totality was coast to coast across the continental U.S. so we are excited about our being able to see a total eclipse. It may seem condescending, but if you take a minute, maybe you can have it in your heart to see that we are some what giddy from the experience. And, as is common among us, really mean you no harm.

Agreed the close up are a little in doubt because you can't tell scale but most stock images of total eclipses are done like this to be inserted where needed but definite cons: #2 bollocks, #5 bollocks, #6 double-exposure bollocks #10 potential composite stolen from the actual photographer bollocks, can't %100 confirm but i've seen this exact image without the foreground (because zoomed in to this size you would not see this kind of foreground detail or comparitive size) from an entirely different photographer.
