On Monday, August 21, 2017, millions of people were staring at the same thing through doofy glasses, as they tried to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse. Not only that, they also immortalized the awe-inspiring moment in photos, and Bored Panda has collected the best of them in case you missed the phenomenon or can't get enough of it.

A total solar eclipse covered a narrow portion of the United States from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. And a partial one was visible across the entire continent of North America, as well as in parts of South America, Africa, and Europe. This was the first time since 1918 when North America experienced the path of totality from coast to coast.

How are they possible if the Sun has been completely blocked out by the Moon? lol People, use your brains and quit believing all of this Fake News BS. I was blessed to be in Varanasi on July 22, 2009 to see the solar eclipse. It was one of the places where complete viewing was predicted although it was not the best place. A village in Bihar was the hot spot in India & prediction was that China will have the best view. I & my elder daughter decided to take a chance at Varanasi & we were not disappointed. We had never seen so many people in our life. There were millions of people right from the Mughal Sarai railway station to the Ganga Ghats. We could manage a vantage point & were ready to shoot the eclipse. Unfortunately it started pouring from the dark cloudy skies. Surprisingly the moment eclipse started clouds over the sun cleared out & rain stopped. I could photograph the whole eclipse, every stage of this amazing surreal natural event. I will never forget the darkness at the time of totality & a big “”AHH”” coming out of awestruck millions watching the event. It was interesting to photograph the people taking holy bath & praying; collarge-5...1d58e1.jpg collarge-599df7a1d58e1.jpg

The thing I like about this is that you don't see many *long* exposures of totality. Seeing the face of the moon there is a little jarring, because we're used to high shutter speeds so you capture the black of the night sky around the corona and, necessarily, keep the dark side of the moon completely underexposed. This is very unique, and tells a compelling story. Well done!

I met one Gent who drove from Mexico to see it with friends just above Galena Summit in Idaho near Sun Valley/ Ketchum, at 9,200 feet. Another Gent I met at the summit drove from Phoenix so they both beat my own 14+ hours driving including one 3am start for the final leg, given the path I had to modify a few times along the way, to avoid both traffic jams plus wildfires' road closures en route, from the Seattle area. Wide-looping north north-easterly via Northern Idaho and the edge of Montana, etc. I've done some FB posts including a great article from The Atlantic on "Benefits of Awe" expanding on those great points with my own long-studied opinion of such widely-shared events having huge "Our Shared Humanity" power! Thank You for your sharing, helping prompt some of my own thoughts that hopefully others will also find interesting.

Pretty sure no one in this time got to choose whether we called ourselves Americans or United Statians. So please go tell the condescending white men in the past to not go with that, because I don't think a re-naming could happen unless someone paid the current Government a ridiculous sum of "campaign" funds.

We live in the United States of America. Should we be Unitedstatesians (how awkward) or Americans? Other countries such as Mexico and Peru have easy ways to refer to themselves. Why not get upset about something important like animal abuse?

So, this thread, smh. I know that the U.S.(a term you probably don't like either since there are other "United States of" ) isn't the only country on the continental of America. But, we tend to refer to ourselves as Americans, rightly or, in this period of history, increasingly wrongly. I know some Canadians who take exception with our using that term, and others who use it themselves in referring to U.S. citizens and residents. Anyway we in the U.S. are overwhelmed that for this eclipse the path of totality was coast to coast across the continental U.S. so we are excited about our being able to see a total eclipse. It may seem condescending, but if you take a minute, maybe you can have it in your heart to see that we are some what giddy from the experience. And, as is common among us, really mean you no harm.
