At some point in our lives, most of us have wished for our bodies to be something else. Some would like to be slimmer, others just want to put on a tad bit more padding. Others want to be ripped like the six-pack guys you see in underwear ads, others want huge, round breasts where they’ve been blessed with small, perky tatas. Pretty much everyone I’ve known has grappled with some form of body image issue. It’s not surprising, seeing how media works very hard to constantly bombard us with messages to be thinner, curvier, shorter, taller, lighter, tanner, have a flatter tummy, a rounder butt, hairless pits, tighter pores, smoother hair, shinier nails, purple eyes, redder lips, longer legs, you know how it goes.

Artist Jody Steel uses her talent to come up with a different sort of message. No, she doesn’t tell us to want to be something else, thank the good heavens. Steel’s incredible body art speaks out to society from the perspective of someone who feels unhappy with her own body. And she gives us a very graphic picture of just how painful it truly feels. If you’ve ever felt like you wanted to change even just one thing about your body because it doesn’t conform to what others think it should look like, you will definitely be able to relate to this.
