She's explaining that she also get's questions about her height, so why do you respond with "you don't know how annoying it is"?... Just because she is short instead of tall questions can't be annoying, it that what you're saying? She chooses to look at the bright side of the questions, she's a positive person (unlike your comment).

But isn't that because being fat is viewed as a negative trait whereas being tall is mainly seen as interesting or even a positive trait? Saying that though I know that any time someone is asked the same question over and over again it's going to get annoying no matter what the intentions behind it are!

It's because there's an association that tall is desirable, and short isn't as much. Though that's quickly changing as the all bodies are perfect acceptance movement is coming around, but that thought it still subconciously in people's minds, so they act accordingly. I'm short too btw,.

PART 2: They asked in all the places you talk about "doctor's office, grocery store, in public". And because of the nature of the issue, I didn't usually want to talk about it. But I realised that this was their way of starting a conversation, so I wasn't rude about it. I think if they'd had time to consider their question in advance, they probably wouldn't have asked it. I'm guessing the same is true for this guy, and your boyfriend. But they met me unexpectedly, and so just blurted out the first thing that came to mind. I'd rather them do that, than say nothing - it seems to me our society is getting more and more closed-off, so I enjoy interaction with strangers. Not all people feel the same, sure, but I still think there's no need to be rude.

Anyway, you say "People aren't engaged in conversation with him and then curiously ask...". I understand that, asking about height seems to be a way people start conversations in the first place. It might not be original, but it happens. I don't think weight is a fair comparison; that's a very emotionally charged topic in our society, whereas being tall is generally considered a positive, especially in males. My (short) height has been commented on in the past, but I'm not so short that it's a daily issue. My nearest personal comparison is when I was seriously ill and had an IV (PICC) line hanging out of my arm for two years. It had a skin-coloured cover on it, so people couldn't see exactly what it was, and yes, they did ask.

Cmon, Kristine, commenting on breast size is not the same. That's sexual harrassment. And no, I don't think yelling is polite, I commented on "starting conversations". I'm not going to respond again in detail because this issue just isn't that much of a priority to me. I'm sorry it's so frustrating to you and your boyfriend.

I spent a lot of my life with people "making conversation" like, "Your breasts are fierce. Are they real?" by total strangers. I guess to many, breast size is considered a positive trait. I suppose that means I am rude if I don't discount that comment? It's NOT different. The people in the stores or offices where he's gotten those comments aren't asking him about his height. They're looking up and saying, "Damn, you're tall." We have a societal norm of verbal diarrhea. How about sidelining the blurted remark and if genuinely curious, try a real comment like, "I can imagine it must be frustrating for you to..." anything and everything like find a car that is comfortable, find a home with shower heads high enough for you, duck under every doorway of most stores and homes...and so on. "F**k, you're tall!" is not a question--and that's what he typically gets. Sorry for posting multiple replies. I would have put it all in one if this page allowed me to.

Further, Janice Foster, he's spent the majority of his life being polite to people who think it's fine to blurt out loudly or embarrassingly to him in public and such, but at some point, if it's uncomfortable for him, he gets to set up his own boundaries. He does not have to cower to stupid social standards on account of a feature he himself did not choose. We do not have the right to point out people who are different, regardless if the person making the comment thinks it's a good or bad feature to have. Period. Maybe if people weren't such jerks to each other in conversation, they might be more open to having one.

Janice Foster, Because yelling out at someone about their height is polite? They don't generally ask about his height. They just make some snide comment followed by cliches like, "You must play basketball." They aren't stopping to speak with him or striking up a conversation. I'm to sure why that's difficult to understand. It's shallow and unnecessary. If they can't strike up a conversation with something like, "Hey, how's your day going?" then maybe think up something not related with their appearance. Height comments for males is ONLY considered unoffensive (TO YOU, BUT MAYBE IT IS OFFENSIVE TO HIM) because the media, fashion industry, and sheep have dictated to us that it is. There are twelve million other possible things to say to someone to strike up conversation besides a person's appearance. If height is acceptable, then so is lack of height, weight, breast size, facial anomalies and more. That's my opinion. I stand by it.

Janice Foster, yeah, in an ideal world, they can. But here are the problems: 1. They usually don't care to find out more about me, the conversation stops there at the "usialities"; 2. I'm a bit of an introvert, I don't hate people, but so much interaction with strangers can be overwhelming; 3. Do I actually want everybody to know about me? It's unpleasant to attract the "wrong kind of people" sometimes. 4. Such usual questions make no ground for me to start my curiosity and add up to developing the conversation into friendship, partially because they leave me a not impressive first impression. I rather use ice-breakers relevant to the situation in which we meet. THEN they can ask me the usual things, once the ice is already broken and melted.

Also, I want to point out that I'm more than my "westerner" face, I have a name, three majors, soon a job too hopefully, I got hobbies and passion... This guy must feel the same way - he's more than his height.
