A wrong number text is probably not the most exciting thing to have your phone light up for. Sometimes it’s something from a service provider you never signed up for, other times it’s someone from Craigslist wanting to buy a toaster you have no clue about.
Other times, wrong texts get pretty darn weird. Like, when someone gives a fake number at a bar and it happens to be yours, or… You see the scenarios may go in endless directions. But this time, we’re not really diving into the reasons why wrong texts are a thing, because life makes little sense and we just have to accept it, but we’re looking at the most hilarious, painfully awkward, honestly amusing, and wholesome cases.

You Won't Believe The "Wrong Number" Text I Got This Morning

Although scrolling through texts from an unknown number is pretty fun, receiving one may be really dangerous. If you have never heard of smishing (or the ‘SMS phishing’), pull your seat closer. It’s a fraudulent practice of sending text messages purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords or credit card numbers. It’s basically a cybersecurity attack carried out over mobile text messaging, so it’s far from innocent.
In order to find out more about what to do if you receive a text from an unknown number, we reached out to Daniel Markuson, a cybersecurity expert at NordVPN who shared some very useful insights and tips. First off, if you ever receive a text message from an unknown number, Daniel warns not to reply to it if you’re not sure if it’s legit. “Ignore it, even if it asks you to reply to prevent further messages. When you respond, you indicate to scammers that you have an active phone number. You will then likely receive a follow-up message.”

Another tip from Daniel is always to use common sense. “Do not click on any links. Do not transfer money or enter your personal data. Don’t download any apps from links in text messages,” he said. Sometimes, however, you may not be entirely sure if the message from an unknown number is safe or not. “When it is not possible to be 100% sure if the message is safe using common sense, I recommend just ignoring it,” Daniel said.
There are also some red flags to look for in a smishing text. Urgency is one. “Smishing messages will prompt you to act quickly. They want you to act before you have time to think or generate doubt about the message’s legitimacy.” Secondly, if it contains sensitive requests, the chances it’s a smishing message are really high. “Most legitimate companies take pains to clarify that they will never ask you for your password or credit card info in a message. However, hackers may send you to a false link to enter your personal or credit card data, transfer money, or log in to an account,” Daniel explained.

Odd phone numbers are also a red flag. “If you notice an odd number (e.g., '5000' or similar), that can be another warning. It is usually an indication of an email sent as a text message. Cybercriminals like this technique, but legitimate senders could use it as well.” A message that has a link is also best ignored. “The message may include an odd or shortened link that looks legitimate but isn’t,” Daniel said. Other flags include grammar mistakes and unbelievable offers. If it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t!

This isn’t staged.. this isn’t a wrong number. This is a classic scam. I’ve gotten 3 of these so far & they all sound the same. Google it. It always starts with “hey **, This is ** we talked on ** or we met at **, I’m in your area, let’s meet up! KEEP YOUR WITS UP PPL.
This particular one was in the news even, it's a sex trafficking "scam" they will meet up with you but then you never go back home.

I had this exact same text scenario happen to me. They claim that the person who they tried to text gave them the wrong number but then do a switcherooo and try to befriend you. It must be some kind of scam.
It is a sex-trafficking scam, they will meet up and then make you not go back home if you know what I mean.

Weird but I received a wrong number text almost exactly the same as what the woman sent - including a picture and asking me if I wanted pictures from her shower. I'm guessing this is some sort of bot or scammer. I told the person wrong number and to leave me alone. Then she sent me a nude pic. So creepy.
I've literally had this same spam text/photo/replies from this same scammer! I'm not a cat but the response was the same when I said I was a straight woman as well....

When asked how harmful opening or pressing a link in an unknown text message really is, the cybersecurity expert said that “clicking harmful links can lead to malware being downloaded, which in turn can affect applications on your smartphone and help hackers snoop on you.”
Daniel added: “Other links can ask you to fill in a form with your personal information, which legitimate companies would never ask for. That information (like personal or credit card data or your address) can later be used against you by the cybercriminal.”
It turns out that usually, criminals try to guess numbers randomly, Daniel said and added that “there is not a lot a person can do. However, it is necessary to be cautious when you receive messages to avoid being affected by a smishing attack (SMS phishing),” he concluded.

Man all the wrong number texts I've gotten have been super boring
I kinda wish...I ended up sexting with the new owner of my hubby's old phone number--forgot to delete the old number and accidentally tapped it--they are a woman (we know this from other mishaps) and so am I, and we were sexting like each other was a Male...still not clear whether she thought I was a special someone or was totalling fukking with me...! It was super fun at the time and then suddenly super creepy😅🤨

Meanwhile, the only wrong number texts I get are a bot from CVS thinking I’m some dude named Artemio. Which would be fine if it was a person, I could troll them like these, but it’s a bot who doesn’t understand anything but STOP. Which only works once and then they text me again.
I've gotten texts from Walgreens in the USA telling someone of a different name that I have an appointment for a Covid shot. There is no way to answer it and say "Hey, I live in a different country, maybe check the number more carefully".

I once got a text that was in a completely different language, I had to Google translate it and it turned out to be Ukrainian I think, they switched to English after the first few texts though. I had to explain the them that it was a wrong number, as they didn’t quite get it at first. They then realized that the person they were trying to text had just 1 number different than mine. They were very polite.
Years ago, in pre-cellphone days, I used to get long, rambling messages on my answering machine around various holidays, from an old lady, thanking me for sending the flowers/fruit basket/whatever. Obviously (given the topic at hand) I didn't have the slightest idea who she was and had not sent her anything. I was always away spending the holiday with my actual family when she called, and she never gave her phone number, so I didn't have a way to tell her it was the wrong number. This went on for at least a couple of years; one time she missed a holiday that I expected to hear from her, and I was worried that something had happened to her. I was relieved when she called again on the next holiday. Of course, she did eventually stop for good, and I never knew whether she had passed away, or just finally found out that she'd been leaving messages for the wrong person all this time.
My wife got asked on a date by a teenaged girl via text last week. My wife sent a courteous reply correcting her and informing her she had the wrong number. I guess she missed the part about my wife being a WOMAN in her 30's, since she texted back thanking her for being a "chill dude" and kept using masculine pronouns to refer to [my wife] in her subsequent texts. She even included a selfie.
I rarely ever get wrong number texts. Might be because I've had the same number for over 11 years. So like it's never "this number must have belonged to someone else".
I had the fun of getting a new phone number when the last person who had it owed A LOT of people money. They didn't want to believe me when I told them they had the wrong number. I ended up getting rid of that number after about a month of getting hassled by creditors.
Oh, that happened to my partner. He got a new phone and kept getting angry calls and texts for "Trevor". Trevor must have led an interesting life, because my partner eventually got rattled enough to request a different number.

When i had a cell phone, the number kept getting collect calls from the regional jail. Yeah, no thanks.
I had a lady call my work phone last year trying to buy some property. I don't know how she got the number but I figured she'd figure it out that she called the wrong person. She kept calling and would get more irate that I wasn't calling her back about selling this property I supposedly owned. I was going to call he and le her know but she kept getting angrier and angrier with each subsequent voicemail and I really wanted to see how far it would go. After like 8 voicemails I guess she finally got the hint or double checked the number. I still think how mad she got that I wasn't calling her back so she could buy that lot.
My personal favorite was when I got a voicemail from a contractor asking for permission to move a bronze statue from a protected forest in Florida. I called back and was like "You have the wrong number, and I 100% do not have the authority to approve this, but I kinda want you to just go for it!"
Not a text but back when folks had land lines my home number was one digit off from....home delivery adult services. Super interesting middle of the night calls. I should have asked for credit card numbers.
Oh boy. Where do I start. I was the one who texted the wrong number because I thought that was my friend’s number (I had one digit wrong) and texted them (this was in 2016). Then the wrong number I texted called me (because I thought that was my friend’s number) so I answered but they didn’t talk. Then they started harassing me calling me a mistress. Tried to explain that I texted the wrong number but they won’t stop. Even threatened me they’d involve the police and that I shouldn’t go to xyz coz they’d have me arrested (I live in abc which is too fcking far from where they are 😂). Ended up giving up that number coz they’re too closed minded.
I've gotten a text like that Mclovin kitty one. I was polite at first because I figured that she had gotten stood up or whatever, but she wouldn't stop texting me. I freaked out and told her I was minor, to which she sent me a nude, and called me a "dirty old man". I had never been so absolutely freaked out and disgusted before.
I think the most idiotic one I got was from some fella trying to collect some kind of debt. I can understand why he would think I'm lying though. But if you lend to someone and don't bother getting the right contact info, good luck with the loansharking business. No I didn't f**k with him. I know that'll backfire on some poor sap if I did. But, I was seriously tempted. Like holding back a s**t tempted.
We were walking into the hospital to visit my dad when he had cancer. I got a random text from someone. Just a picture of three people posing. Immediately my two teenagers and my husband made the same pose, right there in the hospital parking lot and sent it back. Never heard from them again, but that little funny mistake made us all a little lighter. I wish that person knew that.
I got a very angry text from some guy calling me Daniel and demanding to know why I was cheating on him with some guy named Ben I told him he had the wrong number and was talking to a 17 year old female. He didn’t believe me until I sent a really bad selfie of me and my cat
I'm not sure who the hell had my phone number before and gratefully it stopped but I used to get very threatening text messages and voice-mails for someone looking for a Kiara. I don't know what this Kiara did but damn....
