Twitter Users Are Sharing Stories Of Customer Service Hell, And Here Are 33 Of The Worst Ones
Serving fajitas hot is not a walk in the park. It’s rather like walking on eggshells, ‘cause an encounter with a customer can go sour anytime. And forget the mantra “The Customer Is Always Right.” Reality is a teeny tiny bit different.
The truth is, some customers are just too much. From ordering something that’s virtually non-existent and coming up with their own takes on the menu to plain yelling and calling corporate, this is the daily bread of food industry workers.
Thus, fed up with entitled customers, people on Twitter got together for this viral thread and shared their stories of working as food servers. Nobody said that accommodating serial a-holes for a living was meant to be easy, but nobody warned them it’s that damn hard, either.

Is it me or has anyone else noticed that common courtesy isn't common anymore?
Bored Panda reached out to a college student named Palmer, better known by his Twitter handle Decent Pigeon, whose tweet on delivering Grubhub to a problematic customer went viral with 374.2K likes as well as 58.7K retweets and comments. In addition to creating content for Twitter, Palmer has also worked for DoorDash and Grubhub for the past three years and he agreed to share what it was like.
“The funniest part of the industry is that when a customer is mad, they have (a couple of times) tried to degrade me based on my job title, the ‘service industry worker,’” Palmer told us. “It’s almost like I only do it on the side while I study in college to get another job.”
Palmer can’t wrap his head around the customers that degrade the industry they rely so heavily on. “I’ve encountered tons of amazing people in the industry, so why chalk it down to just their job title?” he continued. “Cliche, but people just need to learn to respect one another.”
This viral thread has shown Palmer that he is not alone, “and that I am not cursed with all the psychos of the industry.” He also said that none of the stories truly surprised him because “many customers in the service industry are extremely entitled and rude.”
Just nod your head and give them what you were going to give them... no sense talking to some people.
It’s not the first, and let’s be real—probably not the last time we hear about entitled customers. Just take a look at our previous post on people sharing ridiculous demands from customers from hell or this post on customers acting like total jerks and getting shamed for it online. Such incidents are all too common, but there may be an underlying reason for it.
In fact, American consumer culture focuses a lot on making people feel special and people come to expect it. This article suggests that “They feel like they have a right to act however they want towards others until they’re appeased—which winds up isolating the consumer and shaping their view of the world as 'me against them.'”
This type of rude behavior is related to the entitlement mentality which basically screams “Me!” in most daily-life scenarios. Psychiatrists say it is manifested in an over-exaggerated sense of self-importance, lack of understanding of others, and unwillingness to compromise.
Never argue with stupid. Just humor them and let them pay champagne prizes if they want Sprite in a champagne glass.
I have heard similar variations of this so many times, it is really concerning how many people do not grasp the concept.
When it comes to the food service industry, bad customer behavior is usually associated with attitude problems and plain rudeness. But this research showed it’s much more sinister than that: “behaviors of entitled customers negatively impacted waitstaff employees.”
Moreover, “the participants in the study have reported 'physiological arousal, negative affect, burnout, and feelings of dehumanization as a result of dealing with these patrons.'” In these cases, sticking to the age-old mantra “the customer is always right” may make matters even worse.

I find this one really funny. In Mexico we have a "fight" between Mexico City and every other state: In Mexico City we consider that a quesadilla is a tortilla FOLDED IN HALF and can be filled with any ingredient, "can or cannot contain cheese" and a taco is a rolled or flat tortilla (this is a little bit confusing 'cause tacos in USA are folded in half, at least the most popular ones); every other state considers that a quesadilla MUST contain cheese 'cause you know: QUESadilla=QUESO (I know this one sounds more logical, but I think we have adopted the idea that the shape is what makes the difference between a quesadilla and a taco). This is our eternal mexican fight, so you can ask any mexican if a quesadilla must contain cheese and we will argue the answer for hours.
Sorry, lady. We left Mexico 150 years ago. *SMH* Quesadilla is any flatbread warmed with something melted (cheese???) inside, with or without anything else. So they will continue to do the same c**p and worse because they know they can get away with it... they always have and they always will, especially with our overgrown toddler in the White House.

Ok, but....a quesadilla is grilled/toasted tortilla. Granted, it ain't good without it, but it's definitely different than a soft taco.

How would you like it to be corrected and judged when ordering something to eat because you might not say it correctly? Even more angry when the snotty little f****r behind the counter has an attitude, when you're also right?

to me a quesadilla is TWO tortilla's with cheese and whatever inside nd grilled on both sides and a soft taco is one tortilla with meat of some kind lettuce tomatoes and whatever in it a taco and a quesadilla are two totally diff things

In Mexico a quesadilla without cheese actually makes total sense in Mexico City and neighboring areas. while in the rest of the country quesadillas always have cheese, in Mexico City/State of Mexico the word is used for anything resembling a quesadilla (not the same as a taco), with any sort of filling, depending on what you like, and it can also include cheese or be completely filled with it (quesadilla con queso) if you order it like that. It sounds redundant, I know, even in English it does, but that's how ot works. I lived in Puebla for a couple of years and I never had to order my quesadillas with cheese because it is an ingredient inherently related to its nature there, but I was shock when I first visited the State of Mexico and ordered a mushroom quesadilla, which didn't have any cheese, much to my surprise. I could not complain because that's what I ordered, and I was not willing to embarrass myself any further. I should also make clear I'm not Mexican, and the only quesadillas I'd ever seen were not the real thing.

My mother--who I was getting a CD player installed in her car for Mother's Day--managed to send the *entirety* of the service staff to the back, save one stalwart (brick-red faced) fellow, who had to wait for her keys. (Poor man.) He did manage to make it in the back before he broke down, though. I think it had something to do with informing her (at the top of my lungs) that they did NOT install a dashboard notice that said, "CD player installed. Steal this car."

Actually, I have never had them charge my credit card either when checking in. They give me the option at check out to pay with the card, with another card, or with cash. When I am checking in, there shouldn't be a charge at all since I just got to the hotel and haven't even walked into the room yet let alone stay in it.

There is cheese with lactose and there is cheese nearly without lactose - depends on the manufacturing process. You cannot know, you have to read the product analysis if you are lucky enough, that there is one. I know it, because I am lactose intolerant and had to learn it. And then there are people that are lactose-intolerant, and there are people with an milk allergy, also two seperated issues. So it is not allways a dumb question, even if it feels like it for someone who has no idea, because he has not to deal with it.
Without any other context I am presuming the customer didn’t really speak english, had an intellectual disability, had a stroke or a neurological disorder etc.

God, I have a friend who does this and it drives me bonkers to listen to him talk on the phone, ordering something or getting customer service. He always talks over the person and misses all their questions and then gets mad at them.

I worked as a waiter on and off for fifteen years. I saw the absolute worst behaviour in people. Bizzarely though, customers who weren't rich often gave good tips, while those who clearly had big bucks (evident by their orders) consistently left nothing.
it's because we know what working a sh*tty pay job is like. even with rich people--you know which ones worked for it and which didn't.

What is with all those stupid people asking for cheese things without cheese?
I worked in retail management for 20+ years. I have encountered all kinds of crazy people with stupid requests. It truly amazes me how these people are functioning on their own in society. I am talking about both sides of the coin as represented here on this list. It's not always the customer's fault and the customer is not always right.
1. Customer trying to return a suit at BCF when I worked there. I said no. Had powder all over it. Called tailor it was fitted so custom job. Still no return. Rummage in pockets while manager tailor an I say no we can't take it back. Find funeral card. Realize powder is from the body. I basically told them to get the hell out of the store in front of everyone for returning a suit used in a funeral. Gross.
That is utterly disgusting. That is worse than women buying designer dresses to a wedding and trying to return with fake tan and pit stains. Did they strip the body before burying them?? Honestly i’m horrified :(

This is far from the first time I have found myself wishing there could be a mental competency exam before allowing people to vote. Also is it really so difficult to remember the person behind the counter is a real live human being? I always greet the person taking my order, even in the drive thru, say 'could I have...' or 'I would like...' instead of 'I want' or 'give me', then I make sure to thank them and smile if it's in person. If it's drive thru or over the phone, I make sure to greet and then thank the person taking my money and the person handing me my food. Empathy is important and it really is not that difficult or inconvenient.
Bottom Line? Rude and obnoxious customers need their butts kicked Out The Door! I'd love to be a manager and toss these losers out. No one should tolerate this behaviours
Reading this makes me realize how wonderful is to work outside all year long, surrounded by nothing but rocks, dirt and heavy equipment
As a hostel manager, I get the best of Karens. Once I was helping out the reception, and a lady cut into queue, the others gave me the nod, so I started to check her in to get through quick. When she found out she has to take 9(literally) steps to her room,she went nuts and demanded to talk to the manager. I told her it was me. She ordered us to take her luggage upstairs,cause she was sightseeing all day and her legs hurt. When I told her we do not have a porter and she should maybe take one luggage at a time,cause we had many check-ins, she started shouting my head off,telling me I was the cruelest person she has ever met,cause she has cancer and I just treat her badly. I told her,maaaybe we can take the bags up in 20 mins...she kept insulting me, so I said, maybe it'll take 30 mins..or even 1 hour, so maybe reconsider taking those 2 handbags up on at a time. My colleague ended up taking them upstairs in like 10, but I had to take a 3 cigarette break and cry my a*s off quickly and get back to being nice to all the other normal guests. I love working with people,but sometimes I really question myself because of the few miserable people who want everyone else to be just as miserable and break others' hearts. It actually gives me a lot of strength to gather enough money to be my own boss and be able to turn off Karens without being punished by a boss.
Hairdresser here! I've heard about a shocking amount of clients complaining about their color "falling out" or "not sticking" when it's their roots growing out. I CAN'T MAKE YOUR HAIR STOP GROWING OR CHANGE YOUR DNA!
Because it happens far too often unfortunately...you just cannot make this kind of stupid up

We had a customer that was purchasing unwrapped fruit and veg and also rat sack. My co-worker refused to pack the ratsack in the bag of fresh produce and asked the customer if he wanted another bag for it or would he carry it. Well he lost his s**t, he told her to just put it with everything else. She refused and the supervisor agreed and said he could put the ratsack in the bag himself when he leaves the store but we wont be doing it. This didn’t go down well and called all of us at the express checkout a stupid bunch of f*****g bitches.
How about we really f**k with Karens and tell them out the manager wants to speak to THEM.
I feel terrible about what these food service people put up with day after day. But once in a while, it’s a store person who verbally abuses a customer for no good reason. My Mom witnessed this scene years ago in a See’s Candy store: A mature woman was in the store with a pre-teen girl, perhaps her granddaughter. The See’s employee behind the counter angrily told this girl, “Don’t you ever say that again in a See’s store, or I’ll put a gun to your head!” The woman with the girl told the See’s employee, “You shouldn’t be working with the public – you stink!” My Dad jokingly said he should go into the store when the same woman was there and say, “This all looks like a bunch of s__t to me!”
I worked in a petrol station for a few years and we had one customer that looked to be underage try to buy cigarettes. I asked to see their id before i could sell them to him and he went into a blind rage fit. After he screamed about being over 18 and belittled me and my collegues I very nicelly said to him that even if he was over 18, acting like a spoiled child wasn't the way to prove it. the look of pure hatred i recieved in return would have melted glass, and they eventually left the shop quietly because all the other customers were laughing at him. After that he was very polite when he came in
I worked at a shipping store and a lady came in wanting to mail a holiday card to her brother who was slow and needed it to get there next day. I told her well typically same state cards where I live get delivered next day and then I told her that to insure that it gets there next day I suggest fedex next day and it will almost 100% get there. She opted for the regular and cheaper mail option and take her chances. This lady gonna come in and throw a hissy fit because her brother is mad at her because his card didn't get there on the holiday and it is completely my fault and she would've paid the extra money for the fedex.....I'm so sorry but I think I gave you the option lady and YOU chose the cheaper option not me! So this is your problem....I was not sorrythyouproblem

I've been working in food service for over 20 years now. Among other things (though I have NEVER physically messed with a customer's food!), one of my favorite petty revenge tricks is in how I ring things up. If a customer orders a chicken strip basket, with a water, and then a milkshake, for example, I usually ring the shake up as the drink with the chicken strip combo, since the water is free. But if they are rude or snarky, I leave the water as the drink, and ring the shake separately, so they pay full price for it. All with the same "customer service smile" on my face. They usually don't realize they're paying about $2 or so more than they should have to. But I know. And, petty as it is, it makes me giggle inside! ;-)
Stories like these just make me appreciate all the people who work in the service industry that much more.
One of my first jobs was cashier at a Miami Subs, back when I was probably 16. I still remember a costumer who, one day, thought that saying really graphic and gross things to me was ok. I wish I would have had the courage to say something about it back then.
I'm sorry that happened to you. Sexual harassment happens to every women and it really sucks. I can't even remember all the times I was sexually harassed as I got older I got better at defending myself but when you're young ur not prepared for that level of vile and that's why they do it to young women they know that. It's not your fault you did the best you could at the time. It sucks we actually have to get better at defending ourselves.

Worked at a concession stand at a movie theater... "Does the butter have real butter in it? I'm ALLERGIC to real butter." I had to go back and dig out the wrapper and assure the person it was soybean oil with artificial flavorings and did they still want it or not? (No, no, couldn't take the chance it was real butter. :P)
Customers can be legitimately terrible. I had a white woman accuse my staff of racially profiling her... she was white! She even said she was white but said it was because of her tan. So many of these are posts are people who just can't order correctly or who are confused by menus. If someone who can't figure out a cheeseburger pisses you off, you need a new job.
Answer for the cheese/no cheese thing!! Every single time, every time, I ordered a hamburger at mcds. Every time they gave me a cheese burger. I started asking for a hamburger, no cheese and they'd stare at me like I was stupid and say it doesn't come with cheese. And I'd have to explain, yes, I'm well aware but your cooks keep putting cheese on it anyway and I'm allergic to dairy so I really can't just pick it off. It's happened a few other places as well, but that particular location was the worst about it.
Cust service for amazon here: Had a customer call in to ask for a post-purchase price adjustment because the price had dropped $20 in the week since he'd bought it. When I told him we don't do that, he had a temper tantrum about hows he's been a loyal customer (I've seen better ones), and we should at least give him a $25 promotional credit. he got a $5 one, and wasn't happy with it.
Yeh those kind of people annoy me a lot. Crying bad customerservice and I'll never come back here too, usually, when you explain you can't give them a discount for stuff bought before or after sale..

I worked in a live theatre, the show was about to start and a man comes down with his wife to yell and scream about the horrible seats he has, that the girl on the phone told him they were in the centre. Meanwhile, the show is already starting...when he calmed down enough to listen, I was able to check the order and see that he had bought the tickets from the box office at this theatre, and even better...he bought them from me. The wife looked embarrassed and went in to go and watch the show. The husband largely stayed out and sulked. Nice try bud.
I just find it hard to believe that so many people can be so lacking in the brain and manner department.

Just before the Covid shutdown, we went to eat with a friend and her sister. Mid-way through the meal, the server was passing by and accidentally dropped a tray of drinks. One drink landed in my lap. I jumped up and headed to the ladies room to clean up as the server and another person started to clean the mess. When I got back to the table "sister" was screaming at the manager demanding our meals by comped and the server fired. The manager asked if I was okay and apologized as "sister" kept screaming. I finally told her to shut up, that she hadn't been hurt in any way and that I was fine. I was just wearing jeans which could easily to washed. The "sister" wouldn't shut up, so I paid my share of the check, added a large tip and left. We'll go back when it is safe and I hope the same server will still be there.
Worked as a bartender at a restaurant. Favorite ticket I received from the staff was Hot water No ice.
I have worked in both retail and food service. When I was in retail people took it out on me if we didn't have something in the store that they wanted to buy or if it cost more than they expected. While working in pizza delivery, people get mad if you don't bring something that they didn't ask for like you are supposed to know what they need already. People also like to show up before the time you gave them is up and then complain that it's taking too long.

Among other things (though I have NEVER physically messed with a customer's food!), one of my favorite petty revenge tricks is in how I ring things up. If a customer orders a chicken strip basket, with a water, and then a milkshake, for example, I usually ring the shake up as the drink with the chicken strip combo, since the water is free. But if they are rude or snarky, I leave the water as the drink, and ring the shake separately, so they pay full price for it. All with the same "customer service smile" on my face. They usually don't realize they're paying about $2 or so more than they should have to. But I know. And, petty as it is, it makes me giggle inside! ;-)
Stories like these just make me appreciate all the people who work in the service industry that much more.
One of my first jobs was cashier at a Miami Subs, back when I was probably 16. I still remember a costumer who, one day, thought that saying really graphic and gross things to me was ok. I wish I would have had the courage to say something about it back then.
I'm sorry that happened to you. Sexual harassment happens to every women and it really sucks. I can't even remember all the times I was sexually harassed as I got older I got better at defending myself but when you're young ur not prepared for that level of vile and that's why they do it to young women they know that. It's not your fault you did the best you could at the time. It sucks we actually have to get better at defending ourselves.

I had to go back and dig out the wrapper and assure the person it was soybean oil with artificial flavorings and did they still want it or not? (No, no, couldn't take the chance it was real butter. :P)
Customers can be legitimately terrible. I had a white woman accuse my staff of racially profiling her... she was white! She even said she was white but said it was because of her tan. So many of these are posts are people who just can't order correctly or who are confused by menus. If someone who can't figure out a cheeseburger pisses you off, you need a new job.
Answer for the cheese/no cheese thing!! Every single time, every time, I ordered a hamburger at mcds. Every time they gave me a cheese burger. I started asking for a hamburger, no cheese and they'd stare at me like I was stupid and say it doesn't come with cheese. And I'd have to explain, yes, I'm well aware but your cooks keep putting cheese on it anyway and I'm allergic to dairy so I really can't just pick it off. It's happened a few other places as well, but that particular location was the worst about it.
Cust service for amazon here: Had a customer call in to ask for a post-purchase price adjustment because the price had dropped $20 in the week since he'd bought it. When I told him we don't do that, he had a temper tantrum about hows he's been a loyal customer (I've seen better ones), and we should at least give him a $25 promotional credit. he got a $5 one, and wasn't happy with it.
Yeh those kind of people annoy me a lot. Crying bad customerservice and I'll never come back here too, usually, when you explain you can't give them a discount for stuff bought before or after sale..

I worked in a live theatre, the show was about to start and a man comes down with his wife to yell and scream about the horrible seats he has, that the girl on the phone told him they were in the centre. Meanwhile, the show is already starting...when he calmed down enough to listen, I was able to check the order and see that he had bought the tickets from the box office at this theatre, and even better...he bought them from me. The wife looked embarrassed and went in to go and watch the show. The husband largely stayed out and sulked. Nice try bud.

Just before the Covid shutdown, we went to eat with a friend and her sister. Mid-way through the meal, the server was passing by and accidentally dropped a tray of drinks. One drink landed in my lap. I jumped up and headed to the ladies room to clean up as the server and another person started to clean the mess. When I got back to the table "sister" was screaming at the manager demanding our meals by comped and the server fired. The manager asked if I was okay and apologized as "sister" kept screaming. I finally told her to shut up, that she hadn't been hurt in any way and that I was fine. I was just wearing jeans which could easily to washed. The "sister" wouldn't shut up, so I paid my share of the check, added a large tip and left. We'll go back when it is safe and I hope the same server will still be there.
Worked as a bartender at a restaurant. Favorite ticket I received from the staff was Hot water No ice.
I have worked in both retail and food service. When I was in retail people took it out on me if we didn't have something in the store that they wanted to buy or if it cost more than they expected. While working in pizza delivery, people get mad if you don't bring something that they didn't ask for like you are supposed to know what they need already. People also like to show up before the time you gave them is up and then complain that it's taking too long.
