It's a good trait to be generous - but it's also good to know when you're being taken advantage of. Not everyone has the skills to say "no" to moochers, users, and choosy beggars, so Bored Panda has collected some various tips. First, it is important to communicate the boundaries or conditions around what you are giving to them.

If you want to help, haggle or handout - go for it- but also know that it is ok to say "no"! Some people take generosity to mean that you can be pushed to give more and more. If someone has assumed that your niceness means that you won't say no, respectfully remind them of your limits. In some cases, people won't want to continue to have transactions after you turn them down, and that's ok.

Don't let yourself be consumed by guilt - set your boundaries and stick to them. Just because you can be accommodating doesn't mean you should. Most of us are taught it is a social norm to share what we have with those less fortunate, but giving back doesn't mean sacrificing your worth. Sure you can afford to cut a little off a price, but you are not responsible for other people's financial burdens. Remember if you give an inch to someone who is trying to take advantage they will want more.

Choosing Beggar

Choosing Beggar

Two years ago I saw that guy with the gas can begging for money. Tried to give him four dollars, but he said he doesn’t take anything less than five. After that I saw him there everyday for months. Turns out he’s a fraud with a new Jeep and a nice house. Been following him with this sign since.

I've had the pleasure of such an experience. A colleague of mine, who was in the marketing department (she was just playing Candy Crush all day long most of the times) came to me with a purely illogical and physically impossible request, for a packaging. I politely tried to explain her using her very limited technological knowledge and abilities, that it cannot be done, why it cannot be done, and that I'm not gonna waste my time doing that. I also offered her alternative solutions. Her reaction: "OK!!! Then I'LL DO IT!! It can't be that hard." I gave her my seat, took a step back and enjoyed the rest of the show. She sits on my chair, adjusts it for a minute, stares at the Illustrator window for 10 seconds and says "OK, now TELL me what to do next!!!" I burst into laugh and invited her out of my office before she deletes something important.

Lastly, don't feel bad when you shame a freeloader. We should always treat others with respect but in some cases, you need to be extra firm. "A freeloader really cares nothing for your needs and thoughts, even if they convince you that they do. They also rarely care for normal social etiquette."

kaysimm12 Report

The expression 'Beggars can't be choosers'? first recorded into print in 1546, when it appeared in a book of proverbs compiled by John Heywood. The first form was written as 'Folk say alway, beggars should be no choosers.' Another similar proverb from a different angle is, 'If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride,' which is more rarely used.

A pool is a major liability in the US. It is considered a dangerous enticement in the law's eyes. You are required to fence it in with proper height fencing with a proper climbing deterrent gate that is locked at all times. Even if a child trespasses into your yard and defeats every safety system installed to use the pool and drowns, you are responsible.

My mother's next door neighbors almost had to get rid of theirs because the neighbor on the other side would send over her 8 year old to swim, and it didn't matter if they were home or not, or if the gate was locked, because the little nuisance would just climb the fence! Fortunately, the family with the 8 year old had to move first.

Lol this is exactly what my neighbor did to the neighbor on her other side before she got a fence (with no gate between their houses) surrounding her house. The annoying neighbor's kid would always come over unannounced, sometimes even appearing inside the house through the unlocked back door (both neighbors have kids around the same age, so the kid from the annoying woman would go there wanting to play. When the mother was confronted about it she just brushed it off and if kept happening so that's when the fence went up

My Aunt & Uncle had the same problem. I was only about 10, but clearly remember thinking "EXCUSE ME? Who the F**K do you think you are?" They ended up having a huge "F**K YOU" fence built around their property: gated, locked & alarmed.

Maybe if she sent kids home with a bill for the sitting, pool use, food and anything else that takes up her time and money, she'd either make a profit or no one would come by . . .

My mother's next door neighbor actually had to get rid of his pool because of this. His insurance went through the roof, because of one little monster who'd climb the locked gate to get in. If she had drowned, unsupervised, you bet her parents would have sued!

Tell them this a simple liability issue, and you just can’t get, or afford, the insurance for it because your pool isn’t a licensed business. Explain that it’s why actual public pools have trained lifeguards in attendance. I will bet those neighbors would be real quick to sue if their—-uninvited and therefore trespassing—-kids got hurt at the neighbor’s pool. A nice high, locked, hard to climb fence might just be the ticket here.

Pools should have a locked fence around them. Seriously, that is how so many toddlers drown. If they want to swim, they have to come to the door with parents and ask.

Oh my god, when I was a little kid, one of the neighbors got an above-ground pool (which around my way was luxury), and every kid in the neighborhood suddenly wanted to be pals with the kid whose house it was. Of course, they hadn't wanted to be his friend before because he was "weird" (I think he may have been mildly autistic). ::eyeroll:: Exactly 0 neighborhood kids got to use that pool except for him, which, yeah, because that was HIS family's pool. The public pool was 8 blocks away in a very nice park, and it was free!

The thing is some shops price match so telling them you can find the exact same product cheaper online or in another shop can be a huge benefit. Quite often they can offer you the same deal or sometimes even 10% cheaper.

If someone would do that to me, we wouldn't be friends or in touch anymore. If you don't like something about me, talk to me, don't try to shame me online in front of everyone. I have a tip for those with little to no income who want to read books: GET A LIBRARY CARD. If your library doesn't have books from a particular author you like, you can message them to suggest they acquire books from that author, they often take suggestions into account when purchasing new books. Don't read pirated books if you can't afford to buy new ones.
