Just like last year, International SOS and Control Risks have released a map that shows just how tourist-friendly all countries are, and it’s worth looking at if you’re planning a trip for 2018 to a place you’ve never been before. After all, we all like coming back from a holiday with all of our limbs and other valuables.

Collecting data from the World Health Organization and other institutions, the interactive ‘Travel Risk Map’ reveals just how risky countries are regarding road safety, security and medical matters. According to The Ipsos Mori Business Resilience Trends Watch 2018, 63% of people think travel-related risks have increased during the past year. In the paper, security threats and natural disasters were cited as main reasons for changed travel plans.

Scroll down to check out how countries rank up against each other and let us know what you think about it in the comment section below!

I lived in Chicago, IL, USA for 17 years and moved after a guy was shot right across the street from my apartment. People were stabbed in my neighborhood too, mostly gang activity which I'd never be targeted, but getting caught in the crossfire was always a possibility. Now I live in a small town in Minnesota, USA, where the police cars I'm sure are collecting dust. When I go on vacation, I, like most vacationers, mostly go to the vibrant, highly populated cities which invariably have a ton more crime than the more boring and unvisited places. So, in most of the USA, you don't have to worry about gunshots. But if you head to of Chicago, NYC, LA, Miami, etc, your risk level shoots way up.

I don't trust these assessments, because the specific cities with have wildly different stats, especially when you consider densely populated cities vs suburban or rural areas. The USA and France are given a "Low" security threat rating, but think of all the terrorist attacks in the major tourist centers there like New York and Paris. These maps are ridiculous.

You're being suckered by politicians who want you to be scared. Less than 250 people have been killed by terrorists in France in the last 17 years, an average of about 30 per year. Compare that to any other type of non-disease death and it's nothing. Don't believe the hype.

I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Those colors are WAY wrong, believe me!! We're living in a civil war. This year, only in Rio, 118 police officers were killed, so far. A german tourist lost his bike in a university. Lucky him, because people at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas were killed for their bikes.

They marked Bhutan high. I am from Bhutan 🇧🇹 and it’s a paradise. We talk about happiness and prosperity not danger. Please don’t share such ignorant facts. Our country depends on tourism and if a big site such as #boredpanda encourages it, it can have a huge effect on our small country and a small economy. My country where tourism is the second economy is often referred to as the happiest country in the world and the last Shangri-La. I understand there are more than just violence to consider while factoring our the levels of danger, but even considering the other risk actors we are still very safe.

I have to agree with this, Bhutan is a paradise and quite safe. The food is all organic and grown from LUSH, clean, verdant lands, the water is straight from glaciers, and there is just zero smog due to a complete lack of coal power plants, so the health risk is quite low. You're breathing air as clean as the Swiss! Moreover since this is directed at tourists - you are 100% guaranteed as a tourist to have 2 registered local people with you at all times to advise you on travel; a guide and a driver, as required by travel bureau of the kingdom. Also as a tourist, health care is completely free, and if the well-educated doctors in Bhutan cannot fix you, the free health care extends to the plane ticket which will send you to a superior Indian hospital. Bhutan takes care of its tourists like nowhere else in the world. Furthermore, there are early curfews, so you don't have high risk nightlife. Bhutan is as safe as it gets.

I would not have Turkey in the green zone. They have had all kinds of terrorist incidents allegedly carried out by Kurdish rebels. There is also thought to be ISIS fighters running around there. Lastly Erdoğan is not the nicest of all people. He has brutally crushed any opposition and has stooped so low as to conspire with a rogue US official to get his hands on his main opposition who lives in Pennsylvania. Not the greatest of vacation locations.

You guys (the maker/s of this article) are delusional! As an example: are roads in Sweden safe? Yes, but is it safe to walk around, alone, at night, without fearing you'll be raped/stabbed/followed or beaten to pulp? NO!! And that comes from someone that used to live in BAD areas of Los Angeles for over 18 yrs!! (born in Sweden) The most safe I've ever felt was during a lengthy stay in Shanghai and also Czech Republic. Isn't it also somewhat LOGICAL to keep in mind that if One ventures into certain cities/countries, to keep an eye open?? Or is it common sense to blatantly trust unknown regions and its people because that is the "human way to think"?? I also refuse to be a bloody victim of the Terrorist Propaganda that is being forcefed to us by governments as if we are undernourished geese waiting to be slaughtered for next christmas!

And yet that doesn't begin to factor into the "deaths by" stats. With 300 million guns you'd think there would be at least 1 million gun deaths/year. Don't see it though.

Hi ,very informative article but trinidad&tobago for crime is coloured medium to low which is incorrect ,the murder rate for the year in that country is 425 to date !!! none solved the police are just uneducated and incompetent ,things are so bad bodies locals and visitors are piled up at the morgue Russian pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov has left trinidad and tobago because of high government officials and police meddling in murder cases as well poor facilities for dead bodies and samples . Tourist are at great risk when visiting trinidad&tobago and crime warnings are very often issued by various countries warning their citizens of the high crime rate

It's not quite that simple. For one, Sweden counts rapes different than most countries. For example: If a husband rapes his wife each week over the course of one year, in most countries it would enter the criminal statistics as "1 rape" - in Sweden it would be registered as "52 rapes". If you get raped by the same guy in one night 4 times, most countries make one single entry for rape, and again, Sweden makes 4.

I retired at age 52, and have now traveled for over 8 years with my wife in 23 third world countries in Central/South America and Asia. If you want to travel in many of these areas that I have experienced with the exception of a very few that are now truly dangerous (like Venezuela), take these ratings with a huge grain of salt. Also, do not necessarily believe the U.S. State Department’s safety ratings. Do your own online research. The sum TOTAL of my bad experiences is: stolen rain jacket in Ecuador (probably stolen by another American who was the only other person there that we saw), and stolen lunches from the front basket of a rented motorbike in Cambodia. That’s it. I have had worse experiences in several U.S. cities in the past. Yes, you can be injured or killed nearly anywhere, but in general, my experience is that the people of these countries are far friendlier than most U.S. cities, and far less likely to harm you. Just wear your damned seat belt, and act reasonably.

I have to advise on a high health risk in the Philippines. There simply is not a culture of hygiene here, and that extends to those who handle your food and water. Just try to picture a street kiosk that sells chicken and has one large bowl of dip for the whole community to share! Even locally bottled water has visible bits floating about in it. Foreign travelers almost always get some kind of food poisoning or horrible indigestion/pain from eating the local food, even if it's not the street food - which anyone will advise you to steer clear of. Aside from that, it's rife with dengue-ridden mosquitoes that will ruin any vacation - and they are prevalent in cities just as much as the provinces. Then there is the smog, thanks to absolutely unchecked emissions on a proliferation of public transport motorbikes and vehicles powered by decades-old diesels with no catalytic converters, combined with the freely burning trash in the streets. Friendly people, unfriendly environment.

The good 'Old U.S.A.' is the most dangerous place on the planet.....not to it's citizens perhaps (unless you are a young black male], but to the rest of the world.....the recent drone attacks on Yemen by the U.S. proxy Saudi Arabia comes to mind . Murder and mayhem is the U.S.'s greatest export. War, war and more war is the mantra that comes from Washington. Torture is not a problem it is just what we do. I remember Madeline Albright saying in 1996 that the death of 500,000 Iraqi due to sanctions "was a high price to pay but we think it's worth it ". A revealing comment I believe on the soul of the U.S> Wake up and look in the mirror! You are the problem.

This is BS. I feel a lot safer in some of those red places than I do the US. You can't take WHO data and apply it to tourism. You're not going to die of malnutrition, AIDS or from drinking sewage by visiting a country where those things occur. And the security data seems to include endemic violence. There are plenty of places you might get robbed or kidnapped, but you're not going to be killed by a rival gang or caught up in a sectarian dispute. The road safety is the one I'd really worry about.

I would argue otherwise. Our roads are very developed(in my area at least), but there are so many gun points. I remember the taxi strike from this year. It was really dangerous. Aside from that, there is a car crash daily on the N1. The roads that are “safe“ often dont have robots or pavement.

This cant be entirely right with the states in the green. Thousands, I say thousands are shot or murdered in the states every year, not to mention the thousands who are harmed or killed by vehicles and crime. I wonder what is considered dangerous?

Notably missing: a map showing the risk of death/injury from gun violence. I'm sure everyone affected by the 290+ mass shootings just in 2016 never thought it would happen to them, and small towns are not immune. https://www.massshootingtracker.org/data/2016

Because statistically the USA is extremely safe. Just like there's almost no threat from terrorism. 10,000 people in America die every year from drunk driving yet people are more scared of ISIS than Ford. As for gun deaths, the vast majority are gang/crime related etc. Average Joe has extremely little chance of being gunned down, despite what the 24hr news channels would lead you to believe. The numbers of innocent people who die is almost negligible when compared to the population as a whole.

Exactly what is meant by "Security Threat? As I see it, there is no bigger threat to the security of Planet Earth than the USA under Trump. The USA is the one and only country not cooperating on the Climate agreement and on top of that Trump has the codes to the nuclear arms belonging to a country that seems totally obsessed with arms and the right to kill.

Lastly Erdoğan is not the nicest of all people.

Yeah... in China all the road etiquette you see in the U.S. and Canada is gone... It's nerve-wracking, especially to a driver who's used to calm roads.

With all the mass shootings almost every month, I would say that the USA is one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

I fully agree with you. And as a Canadian, I'd sooner take my chances with France or the UK than the US any day... You couldn't pay me enough to cross the border now...

Norway is green across the board. Just don’t make one showing rainy and overcast days per year on a green to red scale and we’re good.

The USA is safe.... in the middle of Minnesota but I wouldn't recommend visiting Chicago and there are parts of Los Angeles even Nazi's wouldn't invade.

I really love BP content, but I have a beef with the caption/headline writer. Typos, misspellings, and here they've got the description of the last set of maps backwards. According to the "Finally, road safety" maps color key, road safety is very low in Canada and high in Russia. And driving in Kazakhstan is apparently a walk in the park.

I've lived in both China and the US for long enough to tell you that China is so much safer than the US. I was always hanging out with friends towards midnight and I could walk home alone and don't need to worry about anything bad.

Say that to the belgian woman killed in New York, or those who were killed in Boston, or the unlucky next one who may die after some crazy jerk decide to go on a killing spree. Very safe indeed.

I would argue otherwise. Our roads are very developed(in my area at least), but there are so many gun points. I remember the taxi strike from this year. It was really dangerous. Aside from that, there is a car crash daily on the N1. The roads that are “safe“ often dont have robots or pavement.

I cannot believe that America is a low risk. You take your life over there just going to the grocery store. Where as Ireland and the UK it is illegal to own a gun without a special licence.

This cant be entirely right with the states in the green. Thousands, I say thousands are shot or murdered in the states every year, not to mention the thousands who are harmed or killed by vehicles and crime. I wonder what is considered dangerous?

Is it a joke?a political statement?Or a political statement joke maybe? I went to Morrocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Palestine, Israel, Turkey and i won't try the US, thanks, i'm fine. Even if i'm a white woman, i won't feel safe unless maybe with the wolves and bears in Wyoming, but far from people, and especially far from people who care guns.FEEL SAFE TO TRAVEL TO THIS PLACES, people are friendly and you are welcome if you are well raised and respectfull and curious : an human being.

Notably missing: a map showing the risk of death/injury from gun violence. I'm sure everyone affected by the 290+ mass shootings just in 2016 never thought it would happen to them, and small towns are not immune. https://www.massshootingtracker.org/data/2016

How is usa safe with all the mass murders, random shootings, gunning by cop etc etc. Unless you just count 'if it never happened to me it must be safe'

What are the data sources? All maps are sources of propaganda. They are used to show what the map maker wants to show you and data can't be skewed by colors, sizes, and different map projections. This is a cool post!
