“I Don’t Work For Free”: Employee Posts How She Quit Her Toxic Job, Causes Internet Drama

Quitting your job or being fired can be extremely stressful situations because they set you on an entirely different path in life. There’s lots of uncertainty. Tensions might be high, but quitting your job means finding the balance between staying true to your principles and acting in a professional manner (even if you really, really, really hate the job).

A series of TikTok videos about a woman quitting her job with a bang have ignited a fiery debate online and people can’t come to a proper consensus. TikTok user Olivia Bason, aka Olivetrizzle, who said she was “miserable” at her tanning salon job in Dallas, had enough, filmed how she locked the store and drove home. Drama ensued, as her manager didn’t want to pay her until she returned the key to the store.

Opinions are divided about whether she was acting childish or brave. Have a look through the videos below, dear Pandas, and let us know what you think of the entire situation. Bored Panda has reached out to Olivia for a comment and we’ll update you as soon as we get a reply.

More info: TikTok | Instagram

Olivia quit her job with a bang and filmed the entire thing. However, the internet was divided about whether she did things the right way

The woman’s manager wanted to withhold her wages because she didn’t return the key to the store

And here’s the full version of the second video

@olivetrizzle##stitch with @olivetrizzle and if I don’t see that $300 next Friday I will be using these ss in court!! And thanks to everyone who’s been commenting!♬ original sound – uhliveeuh

According to some commenters, the tanning salon makes you sign a contract that means you lose 300 dollars if you don’t return the key within 24 hours. However, Olivia said that she allegedly didn’t sign such a contract, though she was told about the policy verbally.

Olivia told the Daily Dot that she was surprised by how popular her TikToks were. “A lot of people are like, supporting me through it and like, giving me advice, and that’s really helpful. And I just feel very validated in this,” she said.

A former employee pointed out that the company was legally in the right to withhold wages if you don’t return the key when you quit

“We had to sign a bunch of contracts for other stuff, but I don’t remember signing one for a key. And maybe that’s because like, I probably signed it, when I first started working. And then I got my key later. I feel like I would have remembered if it was talked about, but I was told if the key was lost and needed to be replaced, it would be like $300 out of my paycheck,” she told the Daily Dot.

“I have the key, and they’re not going to get it back. But at the same time, like, they never gave me an opportunity to do so.”

Meanwhile, some of Olivia’s supporters have been bombarding the tanning chain with fake bad reviews as a way to get revenge on the employee’s behalf. Olivia believes that she was constantly getting walked over by her colleagues and had to do more than her fair share of work.

Some of the people who supported Olivia trolled her former job by leaving negative reviews

Here’s how some people reacted to the TikTok drama. They were busy debating who was right and who was wrong

I think it does not really matter what the company does or did. Bragging about quitting a job on social media is a no go. I also doubt it will increase her chances of landing a new job, so it might not have been a clever move for her own sake. But obviously five minutes of fame are more important than that.

Companies, even small ones, will cruise her social media, see this, and send out the "thanks for your application, we have decided to go in a different direction" emails. If they respond at all. This is the consequence of wanting to put everything on social media without thinking it through. People see themselves as Victims, and think posting this stuff is OK, not realizing that it actually hurts them. Olivia's next videos will be about how companies are so mean for not hiring her.

She messed up. You do not quit a job in this manner. It will follow you for a while. Now if they are doing illegal crap, feel free to document it like crazy and turn it over to the appropriate authorities. You still would not post it because it could compromise any investigation into said illegal activities. As far as returning the key, you could have easily returned it without all the drama. Little girl needs to grow up.

She was in her right to quit and walk out. Making it a Tiktok post was stupid and childish but since she was obviously not aware of the contract she signed and the legal consequences of her actions, it seems to me that she isn't very mature anyway. As others have said, she'll have a hard time finding another job but that leaves her enough time to think about how she handled this situation.

I don't know about the legality with the key. Most places change the locks anyway, since keys are easy to duplicate (even ones that say DO NOT DUPLICATE). The bigger thing is that the woman chose to put this out on social, which is accessible to everyone, including potential new employers. Not sure if, as an employer, I'd take a chance on someone who might decide to roast me if she didn't like something.

Not always . Businesses that are renting from bigger ones don’t have that option and if they, the business, have X number of keys then it’s probably due to there being a need for them to have them . So now the person who is going to be taking that ex employees spot is up a creak and disadvantaged cuz they are suppose to lock up the building but they can’t cuz they’re not a key available for them and they can’t always count on there being someone who has a key to always be there

Everyone has the right to quit a job whenever they want. No one has to stay and take abuse. She should've had someone take the key in for her and saved the text that said she wasn't getting paid if that was still the case. Documenting everything is a good idea but posting it on social media is not.

Well, now any potential employer will see Olivia on social media and take a hard pass over hiring someone who is, in the minds of the business, unstable and bad for business, someone who is going to cause a lot of problems. It's foolish for young folks to pull this crap for social media likes. It will cause lots of problems for them down the road.

I left a job mid-shift because of abuse. It was a family run business and the fights between the parents and son were epic. Then when the mom was mad at her son, she took it out on me. I went to lunch and never returned. Never picked up my lat paycheck either and they didn't try to mail it to me. Worst job ever.

I had an employer tell me quitting without notice would haunt me. It didn't, bit even for a second. Don't believe employers when they tell you you have to give notice, especially if it's not your career. You can quit anytime for any reason.

Even if the company is unapologetically exploitive of their employees, this young woman’s behavior during and after quitting was very childish, ignorant, and illegal (holding company property—-the keys—-hostage). I have quit a couple horrible jobs with no notice, but both times I just quietly put the company’s keys, along with my letter of resignation, in an envelope and slipped it through the mail slot after cleaning everything up, putting it away perfectly, and locking up. I didn’t brag about it to anyone, didn’t post anything online, and didn’t put either company on my resume, as I hadn’t worked at either very long before the exploitation started and I quit.

I think that they did the most clear thing by doing that. Like take the same sort of situation but instead of it being a key to a job it’s a key to an apartment that you’ve been renting . Why should the other party ( wether it be a land lord or boss ) uphold their end of the whole thing when you ( the now ex worker / ex tenet ) couldn’t uphold your end . You can also see it like this , let’s say the business is renting the space from another person/ company so that they can run their business . So let’s say that when the time comes or the business to leave the rental space (wether it be due to them expanding their business or cuz they went out of business ) they too have to return all the items that they received at the start of the rental just like anyone else would have to just like they would need to ensure that the space is still in the same shape that they got it In . So if on the inventory check list it lists there being let’s say 3 ____ ( insert whatever type or color ) keys

joanna_richardson93 avatar

And let’s say that Becuase of that choice that the one previous employee made by not returning one of the keys (Because of whatever stupid reason that the person had ) now the business who was renting isn’t getting back their damage deposit or any other fees that they could be owed . So becusse of someone’s selfish decision it’s now affecting more than just one person . So if the business is on the hook for financial costs for that decision then it’s only fair to collect the money that they had to lay out from the person who is responsible. All this girls issues would have been gone if she gave the dang key back and not been so petty

If an employer wants to know your skills for a position they check your education and job history. If they want to know if you're a good fit for the company they check your social media. She might as well slap a "DO NOT HIRE" banner on all her social media presence.

The argument that "you've signed a contract, so give the key or $300" doesn't hold water. In court the validity of contract clauses gets tested, if it's against law/regulations then they're invalid. So: If I sign a contract stipulating that my boss gets my liver if I make any error, and I slip up, I'm NOT legally bound to hand over my liver.

The key is still the property of the company - technically you are not allowed to take even a paper clip home if it's not yours - and they can argue that they'll have to replace locks and all other keys. Problem here is that they removed all possibilities for her to give or mail it back, so guess she'll win that claim.

The key is still the property of the company - technically you are not allowed to take even a paper clip home if it's not yours - and they can argue that they'll have to replace locks and all other keys. Problem here is that they removed all possibilities for her to give or mail it back, so guess she'll win that claim.
