Brazilian Artist Creates Heartbreaking Comics Without Using A Single Word (7 New Illustrations)

Interview With Artist
ADVERTISEMENT

Ademar Vieira might be a familiar name to you already since Bored Panda has featured quite a few of his sensitive and heartfelt illustrations telling stories about the wrongs of our society.

Today, we want to share Ademar’s 7 new silent narratives that touch on topics of concern, such as refugees, homelessness, destruction of nature and the most recent event that has shocked and thrilled the hearts of many people around the world—the full-scale war in Ukraine. All of that is told with almost no words because an image is a universal language understood by all.

This is the fifth article showcasing Ademar’s artwork. If you haven’t seen his previous illustrations, we highly recommend you take a look at the earlier posts by clicking here, here, here and here.

More info: Instagram | Facebook | twitter.com

Nightmare

“Today, the world is witnessing what seems like the return of a nightmare from the past, but which for many people in poor countries is a very current reality. For the victims of war, there is no right or wrong side, there is nothing that justifies barbarity, that’s why this strip is called ‘Nightmare’.”

According to the artist, the war in Ukraine, although horrible, is just one of the dozens of conflicts that have taken place in recent years or are still taking place. “Syria, Somalia, Afghanistan are some examples of this, but the biggest commotion comes from the fact that it is a country located in Europe. The West recognizes itself in the images that reach the news and I wanted to take advantage of that to talk about the horror of war and how ordinary people are affected by the decisions of politicians.”

“So far the war has affected the price of fuel and that affects our entire economy, but if the war continues, in addition to people’s lives and all this suffering, we could have other political and economic consequences or worse, more conflicts. For me, it was important to mobilize the public for an end to the war in the hope of a ceasefire and a peace agreement.”

Refugees

“Those who follow my work more closely know that I am not a Eurocentrist and those who bought my book have already seen this strip called ‘Refugees’ and it deals with the conflict in Syria and its consequences.”

The most difficult part of the creative process for the artist is to be able to fit a whole thought or a complex idea into the space that Instagram gives him. “I’ve given up on several stories because of this, but somehow, I always get new ones that fit the format.”

Aporophobia

“In Brazil, some rich people have a theory that living on the street is very attractive and that is why this type of ‘conduct’ should not be encouraged.

With this type of thinking, it is not surprising the emergence of street furniture that prevents people in this situation from being able to shelter to sleep. I believe that ‘Aporophobia’, the aversion to the poor, is the term that defines this well.

Fortunately, we have good people like Father Julio Lancellotti, who does a beautiful job against this thought and that’s why I decided to pay homage to him this Christmas.”

The Rescue

“It is a tribute to firefighters, veterinarians and biologists who are at the forefront of burning in Brazil, dealing with the frustration and sadness of not being able to save all the animals. For them, all lives matter.”

The Advance

“Forests in Brazil have been under intense exploitation and destruction in the past years to attend to the demands of the international market. This ‘development’ and many environmental crimes have a higher price than the so-called progress.”

Which one do you prefer?

“Brazil needs to change its choices and redirect its bets. Continuing to invest billions in the current agricultural model that transforms forests into pastures and into green deserts of poisoned grain monoculture only aggravates the social, environmental and climate crises.

The solution? Yes, it exists! Strengthen family farming and agroecology, systems that produce real food in partnership with nature, free from poisons and generating jobs and income for people. That’s what I try to show in this strip.”

Global warming and the destruction of nature is a constant concern of Ademar’s because, according to the artist, humanity has not yet reached a point of balance with nature.

“Every year we are losing more species and advancing our activities into ecosystems and destroying what nature took millions of years to establish. So, thinking about the future of the planet is something that still worries me a lot.”

The 1st one just made me straight up start crying at work. I cant deal with modern problems. This all literally shouldnt be happening but it is so baby putler can have his way. All of these are terrible but that first one. As a girl whose lost a parent to a traumatic event. I related to it but cant imagine it happening to both of them. Your home falling apart. Everything changing like that so fast everything good just going away changing you forever its. Its just. Heart wrenching.. How can someone, a world leader, see this and thing "yeah but what i want matters more" like no. It doesnt.

Yeah well, it happened in Syria with Russian and U.S. involvement, and Russia learned well. They are now bombing out Ukraine. The buildings in Ukraine look just like the first comic. It's sad that we treat each other that way.

Because in some families here in Brazil is the only "meat" that they can eat (they are so pour that can't buy, so butchers give the bones for free). In the pandemic, the price of everything has increased to such an extent that many people have to live on donations to eat. The worst part is that the queues are huge. There is a church in front of my house that gives basic food baskets (rice, beans, milk, so on). The line is soooo long, it's heartbreaking.

Instead of that, maybe we should look at the injustice that creates such conditions. Before it gets to that point. But, we won't because the idea is to stomp out the problems. We don't want to face them and solve them and bring about justice. We just want to stomp them out and get rid of them. God forbid you don't become a problem.

What is happening now in Ukraine has nothing to do with capitalism, but the fact that Putin is indeed a madman thinking Ukraine's full of AntiChrists and as though Zelensky were the Neo-Nazi in charge. He's a psychopath who needs to be put down for killing indiscriminately and laying siege to whole civilian cities.

I don't feel for the Muhamed comic. Call me a heartless bastard, but we didn't vote to take in third world refugees but they are being foisted on us anyways. It's not just that they have a completely different way of life and customs than us, but they often times have no desire to integrate, they cost taxpayers a huge amount through social services and benefits we pay for, and their presence almost always results in higher crime and lower quality of life. People that want to import refugees should have them all shipped to their own neighborhoods and pay for them out of their own pocket. We can feel bad for them as human beings as they go through their struggles, but we are not obliged to make their problems our problems without even voting on it first

“nightmare” is about how some people’s nightmares (in context, something terrible but not likely to happen) are others reality. like losing your family or home. “refugee” is about irony. these people are escaping from war to a place where they are expecting, well, a refuge. when they arrive, they are meant with hate. many refugees experience hate crimes. “aporophobia” shows “anti-homeless” architecture, which keeps homeless people from sleeping or taking shelter in places so that others don’t have to see them. many are against this for obvious reasons, and a person removed this harmful architecture so that the person can take shelter in a reasonable place. “the rescue” shows us the perspective of those who go out to save animals from fires being set in forests. many animals die, and many of them are still at risk of extinction because of this. “the advance” shows us people clearing out forests, and capturing animals to sell on the black market.

Elites play on emotions & fears to enslave & eradicate you. They plan on degrowing the population out of greed not for our own good. They want to enslave & poison your children they will tug at your heartstrings & manipulate your fears. Realise, they are trying to get you to go to war, give up your place in the world, hand over your God given rights, and starve your children so they can steal everything you have (including your life) & build a paradise free of the stink of us & our off spring. This nothing, but the rich powerful elites telling to sacrafice our children at the alter of their Gods so they can have a world with out us.

For me the comic re the homeless situation hit home, not that I've been there, but too close for comfort, with my Wife and one year old daughter, and out of work after spending everything to buy a new home so we would not have to ever rent again - fortunately I was able to find a Good job and from there, several more until I was able to retire in a 'relatively' comfortable situation so don't have to worry about having a roof over our head or where our next meal is coming from. I'm currently making wax candles from glass jars and small alcohol lanterns (lamps) and heaters that can also be used as a stove to cook a basic meal for those that are homeless - and obtaining small tarps which can be used to make a tent large enough for one or two persons. The biggest problem with the " homeless" population, to my personal observations over a period of fifty years, is that the vast majority tend to (dump) their trash where they "squat", or camp, which then becomes a Safety Hazard for everyon

Is problem that's is not escalable to current population, and a lot of people, with reason, do not want toll away all day in farms and plantations for self sustaining crops, no matter how smiley the artists paints them.

The second comics is not that good. That is, the reality is way worse. As a European, I feel terrible about it, but I have absolutely no idea how to change it. So sorry.

Yes, it exists! Strengthen family farming and agroecology, systems that produce real food in partnership with nature, free from poisons and generating jobs and income for people. That’s what I try to show in this strip.” Sure... Is problem that's is not escalable to current population, and a lot of people, with reason, do not want toll away all day in farms and plantations for self sustaining crops, no matter how smiley the artists paints them.

So, honest and real. I'm glad someone did it. No one will ever be able to say that they don't understand that. It's so simple even a child could... The haves and the have nots 🥺💪💯

Not to heartbreaking since you put a bunch of words and nonsense in-between each picture. I mean you get more if you don't read your bull-crap and just look at the pictures and take it in.

That first comic was gut wrenching. Having 2 young boys I could only imagine the terror and trauma.

All fine and dandy until you have starving people and need a modern agricultural system to feed them.

So just continue destroying the world because humans aren't imaginative enough to figure out how to feed the world without killing it?
