This Girls-Only Dream Gym Packed With Thoughtful Details Is Making Some Folks Call It ‘Segregation’

Interview

We all want to look and feel great, so going to a gym is definitely a great option. Although not all women, for one reason or other, might feel comfortable sharing the gym with men. This fitness gym in Kansas, US has come up with a genius way to take care of their female patrons: have an all-women facility. Recently, thanks to TikToker Heather Huesman, it went viral in a video. It was received with different reactions and even managed to spark a discussion, with some men calling it ‘segregation.’

The video, with now over 6M views, takes a peek into the amenities and thoughtful details that are created specifically for women to feel welcome and safe.

Blush Fitness in Overland Park, Kansas was created following security measures to make women feel extra safe and comfortable. While women-only gyms have existed before, this particular place takes an extra step to meet female needs. Heather, a 23-year-old girl who works as a server and takes care of her fitness, shared the viral video to illustrate her experience exercising there. The reel went viral on TikTok with 1.7M likes and 63.1K comments and counting. She didn’t expect the video to go viral to this extent: “I’m glad that we got the word out about it, though, because now women who have been planning on opening their own gym see how successful it can be! I heard people talking about all-women’s gyms, but I’d never actually seen one, so I thought this would be the perfect way to spread the word.”

The windows are tinted so that no one walking by is able to see inside

The video shows Heather and her friend entering Blush Fitness through its tinted glass entrance—its windows ensure that no one is peeking inside as they walk by. The female-only gym members can use the facilities 24/7 with a key fob as the front door is locked. The members of the gym are notified when male staff will be in the building, stating the exact times.

The member gym is open 24/7 and it’s always locked with fob key access

Blush Fitness also posts male staff working hours to take their services a step ahead

Most of the features are the same as any given gym, but some details are extra special. In case anyone needs feminine products, they are free and available from vending machines in the bathroom. And Heather seemed to be quite satisfied with the place as her caption reads “The BEST GYM! We need these everywhere, we feel so safe and comfortable going to the gym, gonna be my new favorite spot!”

Bored Panda spoke to Heather about the reasons behind her choice of an all-girls gym: “I joined because going to the gym around men made me really nervous. I knew I wanted to go but I was scared of either being judged or looked at while I was there. Men also always take up ALL the machines! I definitely think it’s important. I feel so safe working out there, and we see too many videos of women being catcalled or having their photo taken while they’re at the gym. I think all-women’s, and even all-men’s gyms should be a thing In almost every city!”

Other than well-thought-out details, the gym has all the regular equipment for exercise

The Blush Fitness gym that was featured in the video, making sure all the safety measures are met and taking it to a new level, was, however, called discriminatory in the comments. Some women explained that perhaps it is due to men’s behavior that such gyms have started to appear and there’s no surprise in that.

Kelly Gellert, the mastermind behind the now-viral facility, and her husband Max, told Bored Panda that they came up with the idea for a women-only gym while owning an Anytime Fitness in 2014. Max noticed that one of his large personal training groups that were all women didn’t want to work out with the free weights without him, and on the days they were not training together, they would just do cardio. “When these members were asked about what was causing them to skip weight lifting workouts on their own, they all replied that they didn’t feel comfortable, felt judged, guys were looking at them, etc. From this feedback, Max began asking the female members how they would like it if they had a whole gym to themselves to weight-lift in. And they all loved the idea! A year later, we sold our Anytime Fitness and opened up BLUSH FITNESS.” The business proved successful immediately after opening and now there are 5 Blush Boot Camp locations (that, by the way, offer free babysitting) and 9 franchises, and it keeps on expanding rapidly.

Many women and even some men agreed that the idea of an all-girls gym is brilliant. Some comments were noting that Blush Fitness is a perfect option for Muslim women so that they can work out in a modest facility. But like quite a few things that are made for women only, it annoyed some men, who called the move of designing a gym for all girls ‘segregation’ and claimed that it was a thing ’60 years ago’ and someone even shared that ‘this doesn’t sound like equality.’

About the comments calling a women-only gym ‘segregation,’ Heather thinks that “they just want something to be mad about, honestly. I would have no problem if I heard of an all-men’s gym. If men are mad that there’s such thing as an all-women’s gym, it’s because they feel the need to look at women while they’re there. However, I honestly don’t understand why it’s getting men so riled up, when simply it’s to make women feel more comfortable going to the gym. Men can be really mean at the gym! This makes it feel like a safe space for women to start the first step on their journey.” And Kelly, the owner of Bliss Fitness, agreed with her. “Being called segregated is unfair because the need for a women-only gym is created by males, so what else are we supposed to do?” She also added that “Our mission is to provide a safe and comfortable workout environment for women and we strive to uphold that vision each and every day.”

Most comments were supportive towards the idea of a women-only gym; however, some men were using word ‘segregation’ and doubting its equality

Some people don't understand. This is equity, not equality. Equity is giving women all these special hours and safety because they need it. It's about raising everyone up to an equal platform.

Y'all saying "didn't segregation end 60 years ago?" and you're not wrong, but sexism ought to have ended a century ago, but we still doing that.

Sexism ought to have never been a thing. We've had countless civilizations, religions and institutions that have all had opportunities to fix the problem of sexism and most have continually failed to do so (oftentimes for lack of caring or trying, because subjugating women benefited them).

I'm down with a gym that is for women only, but I'm curious how they will deal with nonbinary/non-transitioned women. If a biological male walks in and says they are a woman, do they get a membership or will they be denied? I have no strong opinion one way or the other, just a mild curiosity how the hypothetical would play out.

This is actually one of the big issues regarding gender fluidity. The only way for them to feel fully included in society is to create a gender neutral world which sadly, isn't possible or realistic. I say this with respect btw, I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings.

Men who complain about female-only spaces don't care about 'segregation', and probably haven't spared a single thought to why these kinds of businesses are so popular. They're just pissy that women don't like being around creepy, condescending dudes like them.

Or maybe some of these people asking questions about segregation like pondering the social implications in this woke age. I'm genuinely happy for women to have a safe space like this - they deserve it and I'll defend their right to it. Also, I'd really like to have a conversation about it with someone who has thought through all the questions I have. I think we all know if I ask any of those questions in the comments here, I'll get downvoted into "this comment is hidden."

I don't really get why someone would care enough to complain. If women want to work out in a female only space, and this exists as a viable business, what does it matter? I'm pretty sure there have been a number of attempts to start men only gyms as well, but these failed because there was not enough interest from men to make them worthwhile to run as a business.

There are "men only" golf clubs out there. So the concept does exist, but you are correct that there is no demand for a "men only" gym. A business needs demand to exist.

Except they don't. Most men aren't going to bother them, so it is unfair to segregate the entire gender out.

Is there a Gym for "Fat Amateur people who just wanna get some exercise done with staff that actually help said Fat amateur people instead ignoring and focusing on that hot girl even after asking multiple times." Asking for a 'friend'. ... Oh yes on to the topic, I find no problem with women only gym if that's what's needed for women to feel safe and not judged.

Yes, Planet Fitness. That’s why it’s so cheap compared to other gyms and has pizza mondays and stuff. It’s catered to people who aren’t used to the gym.

Women only carriages in Japan had to become normal because men couldn't keep their hands to themselves on packed carriages. Being able to do the basics in peace without being ogled or approached must feel great.

As the article mentions female only gyms are not a new thing, which is bizarre that this seems to be the part of her video that got commented on the most. I think tinted window should be standard across the board and other gyms should take note.

Sadly, I hear/read about women being assaulted at the gym or after the gym way too often, last year we were all locked indoors for most of the year and I still read about 4 different cases and I'm sure there were many more that weren't reported on or I didn't catch, the two I can remember details of are the woman assaulted at the gym on Oxford St. in the UK, and the woman assaulted DURING A CLASS at the 24 hour gym in Fremont California. Men complaining about this being segregation and "equality" are men who couldn't give a s**t about what happens to their own mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, cousins, female friends... any reasonable man who loves and worries about the women in his life is aware of the dangers they face on a daily basis and is always happy there are safe places for them to be themselves without worry.

I'm not crazy about the "If you act creepy, THEN you leave!" argument. Why put women through that in the first place? They want a female-only gym to avoid that experience. We're telling them to go through it and just take care of it after the fact.

Comments like "that's segregation" or "that's not equality" are bullshit. It's men's fault for all of this. A women's only gym is actually a step towards equality by creating equtiy. It's taking care of the needs of women. In a regular gym women's needs are ignored and women are constantly uncomfortable because of men. Men stare at women, harass them and are taking pictures without asking. Women only gyms are a safe place for women. So if you people in the comments don't like it, how about you think about why this is necessary. It also seems that a lot of people don't know the difference and connection between equality and equity. To put it simply. Equality means that every person has the same rights and chances no matter the gender etc. Equity takes in account that everyone is an individual and has certain needs. Example, men and women and every other person whatever gender, we are all people, we are all humans and no one is better then the other but while men do not need tampons and pads every month women and people that get their period do. So for women to be equal, equity needs to do its job and give us free pads and tampons. It's a need that has to be met. Periods are not a choice.

When I was younger I couldn't always afford pads when I got my period. I used to use toilet paper from public toilets to soak up the blood (and I do mean soak, very heavy bleeder). I would have been so grateful to be able to walk into a womens toilet with free pads. I am guessing there are a lot of females out there today that are doing exactly what I had to do.

Maybe the male staff hours aren't always the same, and they just give members the heads-up when their male staff will be in the building just in general, rather than relegating male staff to certain hours.

I think it’s great that there are safe spaces like this. That being said, gyms like this are a sort of bandaid over a much more serious issue. The only way to really fix it is to somehow force parents to educate their male kids to respect women more, but that’s an extremely complicated and unreasonable task.

I belonged to an all-women gym in the large city I lived in last. It was wonderful, especially for older women and for Muslim women, pregnant women, and women who had other body situations....weight problems, disabilities, etc. There was a camaraderie that you just didn't find anywhere else. Since moving here I have joined and left two other gyms because of pushy males. I would go to a gym if they would even have women's hours but they don't do that either. I suppose the men would complain.

Would be nice if this became a world wide thing. It would reduce the income of all the gyms where jerks go to watch women. Wonder how many of them would go bust because they lost 100% of their female members and 25% of their male members who couldn't harass women any more.

Women only gyms are totally normal in my country, but they are not fancier than the regular ones. I don't understand what the fuss is - women sometimes want privacy. A lot of excercises look silly or revealing. We also like privacy to take sh*t, so why not privacy for squats? The blokes like it, too. When I was lifting, men were not overly happy to see me in 'their' territory. It changes the energy. I hope we ll some day have real equalityy where the balance between genders will be so common place that can sperate or not however we please.

I don't know, honestly. To each their own, it's good to have choices, but... As a woman, I find this pretty pointless. I'm not denying the existence of danger, but I don't think this is the solution. Furthermore, in the gyms I've been (S. Korea, btw), most males really don't seem to care (or at least have the decency to be polite and mind their own business), but I did experience body shaming from fellow women a couple of times. I think safety should be monitored by the people in charge of the public place and be handled by professionals within the field.

This isn’t segregation at all. In my opinion, this is the same as separating men and women’s sport teams and men and women’s bathrooms (except this is way cooler)

Exercising in sweat wicking clothes without having to put on an ekstra, loose fitting and long, top, so you don't "distract" or "offend" someone. Focusing on your gear and your body without mansplaining and other abruptions. NICE!

not segregation if it's a choice. if a girl doesn't want to be segregated, she can use a different gym. no big deal. if a girl feels like it's necessary, she can use this one. there's no reason why a man should be complaining.....

The gym I used in high school had a women only section separate from the main gym that let women work out away from prying eyes but also had weight machines that were sized for shorter people, making them easier for women to use without getting hurt. These are the types of things that matter when making public life accessible for women.

There's a local fitness chain in my city that's been offering women's only locations for years. I didn't know this was so revolutionary. I worked in the daycare centre of one location. One side was co-Ed and the other was women only. The only common area was the daycare, but with separate entrances for drop off and pickup.

I'm okay with this. Men and women train differently. At my gym, I usually go around 5 or 6am because it is empty, and I don't have to deal with Instagram men and women who think the gym is for showing off their butt or abs.

Personally, I’ve never felt threatened going to a gym and working out. My fear of judgment ended when I realized that most are looking at themselves, not mentally putting down others. Having said that, if there is a market for a women-only gym, then I really don’t see a problem with it. Nor would I see a problem with a men-only gym. There’s nothing wrong with consensual separation if that’s what what makes people comfortable, especially if there’s still a choice of going somewhere else to co-workout

Statistically, men are more likely to cause issues for women. Therefore it makes sense to have them separated. Q.E.D. --------------------------------------------------- ....Statistically, certain demographic groups have higher rates of issues as well, yet segregating them would cause a poop storm. --------------------------------------------------- .... The problem with engineering equality is that you inevitably end up simply shifting the problem to onto another group.

Great idea but there are better ways. For example, placing agents to report harassment or placing security cameras in the gym. I say this because I live in Iran and we were forced to separate all the places by the government. Maybe if we had opposed these issues from the beginning, it would not be like this now. Everything is beautiful and logical at first, but suddenly you see that everything has changed and a dictatorship has been institutionalized.

The economy would absolutely collapse without our participation. The greeting card industry alone is shouldered by us. Men don't do caregiving, home cooking, are the only ones contributing to the home goods industry, cookware, clothing for us , our kids, our parents and SOs, cleaning products, beauty products, art, etc And we head entire households by ourselves as either primary breadwinners or co- breadwinners. So the big issue for creating a women’s only gym, is because they can’t stand the thought of being LOOKED at?! I don’t ever go to a gym, I don’t ever intend to, and I don’t have any need to. But when the problem has zero contact, you can’t hear it, can’t smell it, and you can’t even see it, then it’s simply not a legitimate issue.

Being harassed , interrupted , cornered and thrown barrages of insults at by people that can crush your skull in (and do) simply for existing where others can see us takes a huge toll on mental health, physical health (weathering) and emotional health. Men just will never cease to feel entitled to our attention and those that do ignore earbuds and personal space and obvious signs that we would like to also get healthy for the sake of the people we take care of (that you unapologetically burden us with) are likely the same ones to lash out in a violent rage no matter how politely we ask to please get on with our day. I bet you love it when some creepy 6'7 dude in an empty bathroom takes the urinal right next to yours and stares right you and your junk .

Women fought heavily in the UK to gain membership to ‘Men only’ clubs - most have now bowed to the fight and the equality laws allowing women to join them. It’s ironic that ‘women only’ spaces are appearing and the look of incredulity that have when being challenged to admit men... Personally i think that if you are providing a non essential service you should be allowed to limit entry based on gender - but we are past my dinosaur thinking i guess. I suppose that entry to this women only space is allowed for biological men who ‘self identify’ too?

While I understand why this would be popular with many, for me it poses problems. There's been so much clamoring for men to include women in male-only places it seems wrong to now create female-only places. I don't care the reason. If it's okay for one side, it's okay for the other. Otherwise wholly sexist. I, a woman, would never be comfortable in a female only gym. My experience is that men are far more helpful, accommodating than women in that sort of environment.

Internalized misogyny causes cancer. Be careful. If it wasn't for men sexually traumatizing women the need for a womens only gym wouldn't exist. Be upset w the right people not the ones that are told to protect themselves at all costs and then get blamed for being sexually assaulted. Be mad at the men that made this necessary

At some mixed gyms, men will approach women to cruise them or take pictures without asking or just stand and stare at them. Some women are quite bothered by this. One of the reasons is that by the time they're adults, many women have had to deal with sexual harassment or assault. Since some of these incidents started by stares, propositions for sex, etc., women might worry that the men with go further than staring and taking pictures. Men are generally physically stronger than women, so if a man assaults a women, she might not be able to fight him off.

I'm down with a gym that is for women only, but I'm curious how they will deal with nonbinary/non-transitioned women. If a biological male walks in and says they are a woman, do they get a membership or will they be denied? I'm pretty sure there have been a number of attempts to start men only gyms as well, but these failed because there was not enough interest from men to make them worthwhile to run as a business.

But you have men's or women's clothing stores... most services aren't gendered, but I don't see a problem offering a service to a specific cliental ... like is it the only gym? Are there not 10 other options?

anybody saying this is segregation is clearly delusional! although yes is is a women only gym, that is specifically for the safety of women! most women don't often feel safe around men whom they don't know and there are often many creepers at gyms who are "just going to the gym"

The gym I used in high school had a women only section separate from the main gym that let women work out away from prying eyes but also had weight machines that were sized for shorter people, making them easier for women to use without getting hurt. These are the types of things that matter when making public life accessible for women.
