A Video Of A Man Sharing Some Hard-To-Believe Statistics Showing How The World Is Unfair To Women Goes Viral With 2.4M Likes

Interview

Sadly, we live in a world where inequality still is a big issue. What’s even sadder that some people deny that certain groups of people are being mistreated or that they have a harder time going through life. For example, gender inequality, which even resulted in the huge feminism movement, is often discredited or accepted as normal.

Tiktok user @mrvdk is not one of those people. He made a video responding to a person asking if women really have it worse than men. In that video, he provides us eye-opening statistics that, yes, indeed, gender inequality is not a made-up concept.

More info: TikTok

TikToker does his research and provides us with some statistics showing that women are often mistreated

The app user @mrvdk’s real name is Stefan. Bored Panda reached out to him and we got to know that he is a creative writer, podcaster, and occasional actor. He was raised in Washington State, and moved to California in 2012. And he got married just last year, so congratulations!

On TikTok, Srefan creates videos in support of feminism and trying to teach men how to get rid of toxic masculinity. If you would like to see more from Stefan, here is his TikTok and Instagram accounts.

One of his videos really blew up with 7.3 million views and 2.4 million likes. In this video, he responds to another man questioning if women really get mistreated and asking some statistics for it. You can tell from his facial expression that he is in disbelief. Stefan puts this man down by presenting some really concerning numbers that have to do with women.

Stefan told us that he was very surprised that the video blew up, “I’m still not totally aware of what makes this video as special as it has become, but I’m incredibly grateful for it, because it’s allowed me to connect with other creators about what they go through, and has evolved my understanding of feminism in ways I might not have been aware of before! ”

When asked, what pushed him to speak about feminism publicly, Stefan answered, “I think feminism needs to be as mainstream as possible, because I truly believe it holds a lot of answers to a great many problems all genders go through. I’m aware of it’s checkered past, and I don’t ignore the “radical” feminist, because to me they aren’t radicals but instead rational. What women go through on a daily basis requires action, some of which is radically unjust, and thus requires radical action.”

Woman are 47 percent more likely to sustain severe injuries in car accidents because the safety measures are designed for men

The fact that women are 47 percent more likely to sustain severe injuries in car crashes while wearing a seat belt is taken from a study published in 2011. The researchers concluded that “vehicle regulations must focus on effective safety designs specifically tailored toward the female population for equity in injury reduction.”

Women, in general, are shorter, so they need to sit more upright; women have less muscle in their necks, so that makes women more vulnerable to whiplash.

Over 30,000 underage girls get married every day

The United Nations estimates that 140 million girls married between 2011 and 2020. Of these 140 million girls, 50 million are under the age of 15.

The UN reports that the situation isn’t getting any better and if anything, it’s getting worse with the expanding youth population in the developing world.

Women and girls spend 40 billion hours a year collecting water to meet their family’s basic needs

In sub-Saharan Africa, women and girls of all ages have the responsibility in the house to collect water. Often they have to walk long distances and that is one of the factors why girls can’t go to school regularly.

The UN reports that collectively, women and girls spend 40 billion hours a year just collecting water, which is the equivalent to a year’s worth of labor by the entire workforce in France.

The gender gap has increased by a generation from 99.5 years to 135.6 years

The global gender pay gap is getting narrower little by little, but Stefan said that at the current rate, it will take 108 years more to completely close it. However, this statistic is from 2018. The World Economic Forum released this year’s report and this number has increased to 135.6 years. The setback is caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, because, for example, more women than men lost their jobs.

Only 6 countries in the world guarantee legal and economic equality between the genders

The World Bank released a report in which they evaluated countries across eight indicators: the ability to travel, start a job, get married, have children, run a business, get paid, manage assets, and obtain a pension.

The six countries that have achieved equal rights under the law over the last decade are Belgium, Denmark, France, Latvia, Luxembourg, and Sweden.

There are 2.24 male characters for every female character in films

Researchers from the Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media have found that there are 2.24 male characters for every female character. The report also reveals that only 30.9% of the speaking characters are female. Maybe movies and TV shows don’t seem as such a big problem, but after all, they reflect our reality and impact it too.

People in the comments were mentioning other things that women have to deal with

What do you think about these numbers and what is your view on gender equality? Did any of these facts surprise you? Let’s have a discussion in the comments!

Medical issues: The template for what is 'normal' remains "male". The understanding of common issues like ovarian cysts and endometriosis is... pathetic. Why? Men don't get cysts on their testicles that often, nor can they get endometriosis. Ergo, this pain and trouble is "just deal with it". I was taught that in med school; I was told that when I had an ovarian cyst burst; I see every day that maybe one in four women with these issues get the scans for *these* before the problem becomes complicated by time and neglect. Heart attacks are male-modeled. The list goes on (post-pregnancy/childbirth issues, etc.), but the point is: Awareness is only one step. ACTION is next. B/c I am sick of even female MDs being dismissive, due to training by old farts who can't get past Freudian misconceptions about "hysteria". Rant over. Peace.

Exactly. It is the same all the time. If a disease affects only women or mostly women (like CFS) it is deemed unimportant and barely researched (although it is slowly improving). One of my ex GPs told me after my endometriosis diagnosis that she wouldn’t renew the prescription for painkillers that my gyn gave me “because one paracetamol should be enough”. I need to note that sometimes I have pain so high that not even Tramadol helps. My FIL went for hip pain (he could still walk, talk and had no diagnosis so while it was bad it was objectively better than my pain) and the same GP gave him without hesitation opioids so strong that he needed to stay at home a couple of days because he was too drowsy to drive to work.

I want to share one that shocked me a lot. Endometriosis is a severe disease that affects women and can cause extreme pain, intense blood loss, fainting, migraines, infertility etc. It can be so bad as to render a woman (like me) disabled and too weak to have a normal life. A study showed that 1/10 women have this disease. It is the same % as diabetes. But diabetes is very well known by the public, understood by doctors, easily diagnosed, researched and has available treatments. Endometriosis is still unknown to most people, there is barely research about it (now it’s improving), the cause it is unknown, there is no cure, most doctors are severely uneducated about it and the average diagnosis time is between 7 and 12 years (10 in my case) because of doctors don’t know enough about the disease and because they don’t take women’s period pain seriously,

Another example is with the scandal with the COVID vaccinations and the clots risk. The birth control pills that women and girls take without anybody batting an eye have 100 more times risk of blood clots than the Astra Zeneca vaccine. But since men could be killed our society panicked about the vaccine while they are fine with women being at higher risk because they don’t have access to better contraception or better treatments for the period related diseases.

It's so much more likely a woman will experience violence at the hands of someone they know yet there always seem to be more comments about fear of the stranger lurking at night. Since it's about statistics, men are actually more likely to be violently attacked by a stranger and much more likely to be murdered by one. I am not saying men have it worse at all, just trying to imply maybe out a night isn't as dangerous as with acquaintances during the day.

Men are more likely to be attacked by a stranger but also because men are more likely to be involved in crime related violence. Women are still more likely to be randomly attacked by a man in the streets if you don’t count crime related attacks.

It took 27 years of having a daily period to get diagnosed. I was always told to take birth control to fix it, but that messed with my seizures and wouldn't fix it. Surprisingly, the first visit to a gynecologist after I moved found the answer right away. Hormonal imbalance. I was given medication and now have a regular period monthly. This gynecologist was a man, but my point is 27 years of people looking no farther than birth control!

I'll agree... even something a simple as women's razors... No different really, from a man's razor except the "pink" version costs more. My wife just uses the same one I use. I bought 2 handles, store both in different holders so we know and she actually likes this one better than the "ladies" razor.

Globally compared women's rights are without doubt worse than men's. But are you sure that there are only six countries where women have these eight rights equally? Because as far as I know in my country women have equal rights to travel, start a job, get married, have children, run a business, get paid, manage assets, and obtain a pension and it isn't mentioned in the list of these 6. And I'd think there would be more of these countries at least in Europe. (And considering children as a single woman you are allowed to adopt and men can't do that.) However, it is, the amount is too low whether it's six, 10, 33 if it's less than everywhere.

In the US, 40% of women do not qualify for unpaid maternity leave. Hence, when I asked for maternity leave, I was denied and forced to quit (or they were willing to list me as job abandonment). My husband received 4 months of paid leave. Yes, I checked with a lawyer and what my employer did was legal. I was not protected under FMLA because I worked for a company with fewer than 50 employees and they had decided that it was cheaper to replace me with someone at a starting wage than to hire a temp. Not to mention that where I live, every daycare has a 9 month waiting list and costs over $1500 a month for 1 child. It doesn't surprise me at all that the number of countries with equal rights is so low.

Cherry picking statistics won't help. For every statistic showing women have it worse, there is obe showing the opposite. Men are more likely to commit suicide, more likely to get depression, more likely to die from work accident or get severe injuries, more likely to be forced into military etc. Most more related to wealth status than gender. If you're poor you suffer, if you're rich you don't.

I'm sorry but, I have to strongly disagree with the "Men don't have to worry about getting raped while walking alone at night." Everybody can get raped no matter your gender. Just because they're male doesn't mean they aren't vulnerable. Men can be victims of female and male rapists. I don't find the "men can't be raped " thing remotely possible. That's the only issue I have with this artical. Thank you for reading my rant have a good day. No, i'm not an inconsiderate asshole i'm just disagreeing with one of the images of comments on this post. I understand that it happens to women more then men but it still happens it shouldn't be happening but it still does and we can't ignore it.

Yeah, that's nice. But do men carry their keys between their fingers for fear of rapists? Worry about passing construction sites because of rape? Worry about parking spots because of rape? Change clothes, routes, jobs, schedules because of rape? Christ, stop whining about theories in your urge to make sure men get attention to understand this is daily reality for women.

Women are more likely to die in car crashes, because car crash test are generally performed with male-like dummies, meaning safety measures are not really built to protect female bodies. Only recently have some car manufacturers started to test with female dummies, which improves car safety for women.

Okay, so, this guys sources seem pretty accurate, so check, this ones legit, the comments “we can’t walk at night” I mean, night is a bad time to walk in general, no matter your gender. Especially in cities or around them where I am. Gangs are out more at night. Now onto the “have men experienced childbirth?” Question, no but we can pass kidney stones which are proven to have been more painful. We can also break our femurs which is the most painful feeling known to humans, any woman who has done both of either things will tell you this. So we can experience greater pain. Now, back to the “women can’t walk at night”, in my experiences, most criminals (unless it’s for assault purposes) will avoid women when committing crimes, as that is in the unspoken rules of crime, you don’t mess with women. I’m not saying the chances of getting assaulted are something to be looked over, I’m just saying in general, it’s pretty equally dangerous to walk around alone late at night. Though I agree with the rest of the post, 10/10, would/will recommend

That is quite inaccurate. Some women experienced more pain passing kidney stones than giving birth. Some women experienced more pain with birth. And some women experienced such severe period pain (due to endometriosis) that it was worse than them giving birth or passing stones.

I'm only 19 and I was born in a town less than 10,000 people and then moved to a town of about 18,000 people so small towns and was never catcalled but a couple months before my 19 birthday (just a couple months ago) I moved to a big city and men here are so much creepier than small towns and I definitely don't feel safe even just going for a walk in the park in the middle of the day

Yeah, the sexual assault is really a problem in modern society, it should really be easy, get consent, done.

Sorry, but I'm calling bs on the hours of collecting water. There are only approximately 8,760 hours in a year. It's possible he just misspoke, but for that to be the case, he would be speaking in units smaller than microseconds. I agree with his other points though. Sincerely, a girl that likes math

I just want to add that young boys are 2-3x more likely to be sex trafficked than girls. We all have it bad and we all might be blaming each other maybe we should all come together and come up with solutions for that which ails us.

Christ, stop whining about theories in your urge to make sure men get attention to understand this is daily reality for women.

i kinda agree with most what this guy says. i also likes how he states facts without attacking everybody around. We can only improve the world if we all are calm and focused. But for the car accident, women having more chance on whiplash. How can this be solved? i would think slower speed limits?
