Woman Quits Her Job Interview After Recruiter Says They Can’t Pay Her $21/Hour, Sparks A Debate Online

You put together your resume, craft the cover letter, and land a job interview. While it’s easy to get excited at this stage, simply walking through the door is only the beginning of the hiring process. The person across the table will ask you some difficult questions.

But TikToker Jayla was prepared for everything. And it was actually her own choice to walk away from the position. In a now-viral video, the woman says she turned down a manager job at Family Dollar after they couldn’t offer her $21 per hour.

This led to a discussion about fair wages and working conditions in the comments, and I gotta say, it’s quite empowering to see people standing up for themselves.

If we were to take a look at the numbers, Jayla’s figure sounds more than reasonable. According to Salary.com, as of April 26, 2022, the average hourly wage for a retail store manager in the United States is $32, but the range typically falls between $27 and $41.

However, it’s worth keeping in mind that hourly rates can vary widely depending on many important factors, including education, certifications, additional skills, the number of years you have spent in your profession, and so on.

The company refused to pay her $21 per hour

Generally, you do not want to allow your impulses to dictate the way you behave at a job interview.

To many people, negotiating their new salary is stressful because it’s something most of us do very rarely and have little experience with.

Andres Lares, a managing partner at Shapiro Negotiations Institute, thinks people are generally most concerned with feeling unprepared or worrying about an unpredictable outcome.

These nerves are normal and healthy, but it could help to think less about what you could lose in a negotiation and more about what you can do to prepare, Lares told CNBC Make It: “Even if you can’t get everything you want, it’s about doing everything you can to walk away knowing you’ve done your best.”

So Jayla simply got up and left

First of all, when and how you should bring up money during job interviews will depend on the situation. If the job description already lists the range, or if you’re confident about your number and have a lot of interviews lined up, you might bring it up in the first or second round, Octavia Goredema, an author and career coach, also explained to CNBC Make It.

You can ask the hiring manager to share their budget for the job, or you might be strategic about naming your desired range and tap into online resources and your professional network to get an idea of your absolute minimum salary, your desired target, and a stretch number you want to negotiate up to.

By the time you have that offer in hand, you have a lot of leverage to negotiate. “You wouldn’t be in this room or on this call if you couldn’t do that role. Recruiters wouldn’t have time to waste if they didn’t think you could deliver on it,” Goredema said. “Now we’re discussing not only what’s required of you, but what you’re looking for.”

If you find yourself in the same position as Jayla and HR makes you an offer that’s significantly lower than what you want, Lares said you need to point it out.

But it’s also important how you go about it. Leading with gratitude, for example, can make a difficult conversation more palatable. “Thanks for thinking of me for this role and sharing the pay. Unfortunately, that’s significantly lower than what I would have expected for this.”

Next, you can gauge whether they can be flexible on the offer. Remind yourself, and the other party, that a negotiation is working together to reach a compromise.

You can frame it something like this: “I want to be respectful and not waste your time, but I’m also interested and want to make this work. What’s the flexibility on pay?”

Of course, it’s also possible the hiring manager doesn’t understand your qualifications or years of experience. Politely remind them of your candidacy and ask along the lines of: “Is there a different title or level you’re hiring for that’s a better fit and aligns with my expected pay?”

It’s all about making the best of it!

Nobody ever says, "that CEO earning 351 times more than the average worker is driving up the prices for the consumer." More often they say, "But if you pay people more, then that extra cost gets passed along to the consumer." Oh hey - maybe if that CEO wasn't earning 351 times more than the average worker, and the average worker was being paid a livable wage, then the average worker could AFFORD TO PAY FOR NECESSITIES! Sorry about raising my voice. It's such utter BS when they say higher worker salaries cause higher prices. The prices could stay exactly the same if the people at the top of big companies didn't feel compelled to grab up so much.

Worst part is how CEO salaries are decided. The industry has a "standard" amount but you never want a random joe as your top guy so you pay enough to buy them out of your competitor's hands. And it just keeps circling up like that and no one ever (basically) gets any lower than what they ask. Usually it's higher. And men get paid higher on average, so why don't we just go ahead and blame all CEOs but especially the male ones who keep it circling the tower?

That's one reason we're making so little. They are busy making everyone feel guilty for asking for pay they deserve. I think 2 things made this get worse before people started standing up for themselves: (1) credit started getting easier to get in the 80's/90's so people just racked up credit cards instead of asking for raises (2) women entered the workforce in even larger numbers so their salaries were a buffer for the family. Meaning most people didn't get desperate until recently. I'm really worried right now with the housing situation & the groceries going up.

And this is exactly why business should list the salary range in the job posting. I've never understood why most places want to waste everyone's time. To me that's the same as posting a job opening and not telling what the job details are or even what the position is. Communication is key, and there is no reason not to post the salary ranges.

I believe some states, only a very few, are starting to require companies to include compensation in the job posting. I think you're right that transparency allows people to make an informed decision of whether they want to spend time exploring an opportunity. By default it also spares the interviewer's time.

Problem is our laws allow these super rich CEO's to make campaign contributions to our lawmakers, who then avoid making laws that will make them less rich. The constitution says Congressmen and the President can't accept bribes, but somehow everyone turns their heads away from campaign contributions.

As an ex retail worker, manger, store manager, office manager, and also as skilled laborer in three different careers, I never got close until now at $21 an hour starting. My new and current job, which is 4 minutes from home, 9-530, with insurance and pto, health dental vision, advertised at $20 an hour. I busted my butt to get an interview (of course after weeks of online application, follow up emails, phone calls, finally an in person appt was made. I got the position. Now if I master skills I will get pay increases in $2 amounts for each. I do furniture repair for a name brand north east coast company. In a warehouse. On my feet. Hand and eye and tool skills. I feel fairly paid. Other jobs have promised x amount and etc with full time only to come up short on the wage or hours or actuality of what the role would encompass. Stand your ground. Earn what you deserve to be paid. And if you can't then reevaluate what you want to be doing as a career.

Yeah, and that's a lot more responsibility and work than a dollar store for sure. Go to your local Auto parts or hardware store and ask them what they are making. They have to have a lot more knowledge as I am sure you do.

1.33 B net income in 2021 , gross was north of 7B but thats gross so used the 1.33 number instead.

I just put in my 2 weeks notice at a retail job that I've had for almost 11 years. I'm a manager at a grocery store and am constantly covering 4 to 5 call offs on top of all the other work I'm expected to do, not to mention the constant abuse from customers. Another manager quit and their work landed on me so I asked for a pay raise. I currently make 20 an hour after 11 years with this company. They didn't bother hearing me out, they said no, so I politely handed in my resignation. No more! They then offered me a dollar raise and I said not good enough. My last day is Saturday and management has been pulling me into their office begging me to stay on but unable to offer me more money.

I work for an 8 million dollar company and make $20.5/hr plus OT plus a monthly performance bonus and I'm not even a manager. Why wouldn't a multi billion dollar company pay a manager $21/hr?

I want to start thinking by the minute. There are 60 minutes in an hour. Think of how much work you can do in a minute. Think about how much you'd like to make for that minute of work. Now think about how much you can do in 5 minutes. Would you do 5 min of work for $2? Would you think that's too much? Too little? Just right? Or would you expect at least $5 for that 5 min of work? Would that be too much? Too little? Or just right? $5 for every 5 min worked would be $60/hr. Now think about being paid what you're being paid now and all things that are worth working all those hours and minutes.

Yeah and they have multiple stores or large ones with extensive knowledge above some kids toys, plastic cups and paper plates that need to be ordered. Most are salary and it's just averaged out hourly. Take your yearly salary and multiply it by 2,080 and that will give your hourly rate.

And people need to understand that! It’s reality! And at the end of the day that’s not a career move there are stores that pay that amount for that position but the dollar store is not one of them! Not to mention maybe that location specifically cannot offer that amount. I have worked in retail as an associate and a manager. Different locations were able to make different salary offers. Fast forward to my career transition into an office of the second largest bus dealership in the country (multi locations) I was paid significantly more than my counterparts. I also received additional benefits and flexibility based on location. There are a ton of parameters that guide salary, schedule, etc. not saying the pay issue is right but I’m painting a picture.

I couldn't see anyone working at a Family Dollar store making $21 per hour. Every time I go into one of these stores it is always a big unorganized mess and dirty. Most of the time the items on sale are not available, this even happened before the pandemic. If you are a store mgr you should know how to order enough stock to last until your next truck comes in. The customer service is terrible and they are very rude, I suppose they don't understand their paychecks do come from customers.

I made 7.50 an hour as an assistant manager in 2010. Since minimum wage was 7.35, it made sense to them. I was a desperate mom at the time. But considering minimum wage hasn’t changed, they probably haven’t adjusted their wages much.

$21/hr what skills are you bringing? What experience do you have? There are many things you have to bring to the table if you want a good wage... You can't expect a good wage when you don't have anything to offer... A manager with 10yrs exp will make more than a manager who hasn't had any exp...

It's a assistance manager role lol. I work part time security no dagree for $24 a hr. My company doesn't make as much as dollar tree a billion dollar company. Nothing but greed and they depend on people like you to hold the low pay down for everyone.

I don't understand why she didn't ask for a salary of say $45k a year instead of an hourly wage..That $21 dollars she asked for adds up to $61k a year. And it doesn't take into consideration that most retail managers work 10-12 hours a day not 8. So she is asking for close to $70k a year to be a co manager of a dollar general store? Try Walmart or a large grocery chain if you want to make that kind of money but make sure you have plenty of experience and a college degree helps too.

I make $23/hour as the 3rd retail manager in the store. Basically store leader, assistant store leader, then me. She definitely deserves $21 to be an assistant store leader!!!

I was hired by a restaurant in S.E. Kansas making $4 hr. When the pandemic hit, I was promoted to manager with a.50¢ raise ($4.50hr.). The owners decided to open a new restaurant in Iowa and wanted me to run the new restaurant. Not wanting to live in Iowa, I raised the stakes a bit. I told them that in order for me to move to Iowa and run their restaurant, I would need the following: $9 hr. PLUS my housing, utilities, internet, and meals paid for. I figured that would be a fair trade. This is in fall, 2020. They were fine with my request until January 2021. Then suddenly the owners wanted me to downsize my staff from 18 ppl to 6 ppl. and they also informed me that I would be taking a pay cut, from $9hr. to $4.50hr. long story short, I left. When I left, so did my staff. Been happier and healthier ever since. 😎

Family Dollar is a real shock operation. I hate saying if you seen some of the employees they have? They cater to what is known as the downwardly mobile. I would expect that they probably wouldn't pay a store manager more than probably about 15 to $16 an hour which is why if you've seen the store managers they're not exactly the brightest group in the bunch.

Was sympathetic to this until she included "wrong bi*ch*" But you see they way it works is that you take what they offer or you offer yourself elsewhere. When you end like she did it feels like you feel they are obligated to your expectations. They are not just as you are not obligated to theirs. Additionally with all the comments backing up this person... Is their any indication she's worth her asking? Is she a good manager? Does she have a record of positivity at past positions. A position isn't where the worth is. The worth is in the person holding the position. Maybe it's not 21 they can't do but maybe it's 21 they can't do for her. If she has little experience or just experience that isn't that exciting... Maybe the next person brings more success to the interview and gets 25. Stop valuing jobs by a position and start valuing yourself. Are you worth what you're asking?

That's the problem . Weak desperate people accepting low pay they depend and love people like that. They love to low pay them while eceos make 3.5 million. If more people weren't such desperate slave minded individuals we could force these places to pay a living wage instead of a slave wage.

I'm a manager at Five Below and make $11.50 an hour. I want to quit because the amount I get paid vs. the amount of work I do just isn't worth it. I've sunk back into a deep depression and am starting to experience a mental burnout. At this point I've started to do the bare minimum in a "This is what $11.50/hour looks like work wise." way. I'm kind of hoping to get fired. It's not looking like that'll happen unless I just become completely incompetent at my job but, we'll see I guess. 🤷🏾‍♀️

It was an assistant managers job, not a managers job as the story compared oranges to apples on the wages. She was over qualified and had higher expectations while they were looking for entry level. Nothing really to see here.

For many, MANY years, the labor market was a buyer's market. Employers had the upper hand and were able to call the shots. Now FINALLY, after many decades of this, the balance of power has finally shifted somewhat toward the employee. But as we have seen, it will take some time for employers to get used to the idea and stop expecting employees to work for peanuts.

You know what was missing from this story? What relevant experience and education she has for the job. I am a recruiter and time and time again I see applicants who can't even put on a button up shirt, no job outside of working as a dish washer or fry cook, barely has a high school education from 10yrs ago coming at me like they deserve $25+/hr. It's dollar general for crying out loud! Certainly degrees and experience count for something, but it's dollar general! $21 for such a job is a gift! Wake up and smell what you're shoveling. If you really are worth $21 an hour you need to aim higher than a dollar store. A CEO generally makes a whole lot more than the entry level positions. That's why they are the CEO. They make decisions a little more important to the company's success or failure than someone who just showed up one day and said, "give me". You want livable wages? Finish school. Judging by the poor grammar and spelling in the comments here it's likely many of you did not. That is step one. Step two, don't live outside your means. Having children is expensive. Having children without a stable career, home, health and life insurance is just irresponsible. Crying about what you don't have because you are irresponsible is just sad. Thank you! People today need to step down off their personal entitlement pedestal. They think they are worth so much more but usually bring nothing to the table. They want the easy job in a cozy building and make $45k a year and then some. In early-mid 2000s I was making $11/hr in construction and raising my daughter solo. People today have no concept of worth and managing money. They think they should walk into a low skill, entry level job and have a nice house, new car and all kinds of toys.

I feel ya. I was forced to resign from my last job because my boss said he, "realizes that he has been treating me like a complete a*****e". Those were his own words and he admitted it. When HR decided to support his disgusting behavior, I resigned. Now, after 35 yrs working in the field of Chemistry, companies are sending me entry level position offers. That's my motto. Take your skills to a company that will pay you more. This is why I make sure I ALWAYS have 6 months worth of emergency fund saved back to find the job I want and have earned. What is real work lol,? Construction get paid like $30 a hr that's real work. I sit all day doing part time security armed for $24 a hour . You pick what you want you sound bitter but it's in you if you want a easier job. I worked in factories before which is real work cutting steak for $16 a hour I had a couple of factory jobs that felt like I was suffering and I hated it. I found something a lot easier and pays more. I also personal train out my basement for $40 a hr. Love what I do now. Pick your fate it's in your hands.

This only applies to certain job markets, namely service workers. I have three degrees in biology, marine biology and natural resources. For all the experience I have working outdoors, in dangerous circumstances (anyone been stuck waist deep in quick sinking mud of ocean bays at 5 am?), I don't get offers above $20 an hour. These are government jobs. I just accepted a position living in a remote cabin in Alaska, hours extending from sun up to sun down (6am-11pm) , 20 meters from grizzly bears daily.Ihave to do gun training and everything. $19 an hour. So forgive me if I roll my eyes at an office worker grumbling about not making $20+. My first job was dollar tree, I've worked in restaurants, and I'm telling you, it's not that hard. There are many jobs that have to deal with sh!**y people, including when I was doing marine mammology surveys (do you know how angry the public gets when your group has no choice but to euthanize a beached whale for it's own interest?). I love seeing articles and stories on this topic and mostly for the people involved. This woman demanded (and feels she's worth) $21/hr to be a store manager at family dollar. Yet, this woman doesn't even conduct herself professionally (in response to hearing a "no" to her salary request) during the interview. These days professionalism is dead and it's usually the people are who are least professional that have the highest demands and sense of entitlement. Also, this woman mentions in the comments that she has "degrees". If this person MULTIPLE college degress then why is she applying for an hourly position at Family Dollar anyway. Cost of living differs as does taxation state to State so perhaps $21 an hour is not feasible in that area. If she lives in California, New York or Chicago then it would not be unreasonable to ask for that level of pay.

First off,I think I missed something because while reading this whole article I was thinking this was a GM role and being the store manager and I was like woah, yea she should be making over 21 for sure, but then I saw assistant manager in the comments and don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's nothing but the national average for store managers are taking into account best buys and targets and Walmarts and those are much more work then a dollar tree and I know from experience unless your the GM at one of those places even the assistant manager makes pretty low amount and those are big box retailers so yea I don't see you making over 20 to start at a family dollar store just based on similar positions. If you have a degree in management or similar work experience background to add to your resume you can do better anyways! Go somewhere you can make good money. If you don't have experience you got two options. 1 pay to get that degree 2 get underpaid to get that experience. Good luck

And how far back before you are you referring to? I was born in 1980 and I was raised with a real work ethic. I didn't get where I am today by crying and complaining for handouts. I built my skills from the start of being an employee as a teenager. By 25, I was raising my 1yr old daughter by myself on $11/hr for a skilled job and paying $675/mo for our house. Don't get me started on daycare and childcare expenses. People today need to learn a real work ethic and how to manage their money. These last generations are too spoiled and think that having all the toys and luxuries the rest of worked for should be given to them with little effort on their end just because they are alive. Younger groups today are nothing but spoiled, entitled, whining babies. We're all about to suffer for the next 30yrs+ because these younger generations are going to contribute very little to our society and economy.

My question is, is Dollar General and Dollar tree non-franchise. Because people forget Franchise establishments are different then corporate. Which takes in fees with minimal employee overhead. Yeah, 'like' good luck to whoever does hire her. Hourly rate is not the sole consideration. You have to consider insurance, vacation, sick pay, retirement, profit sharing, bonuses, etc. Those also figure in to your hourly rate when paid for by the company.

I understand her feelings/attitude...and still, she could have spent an extra minute, or two, to find out what he was willing to offer. It wouldn't have stopped her from declining. At least she would have known the dollar figure she was saying no to. What isn't apparent is whether or not any benefits were offered. Considering it is Fmly$, probably none. Additionally, places like this are not looking for longtime employees. They treat them as disposable. They only look for the right-now employees to kick the store a little further down the time line and keep the dough rolling in and the upper echelon plush and comfy. Their customers for the most part do not have high expectations either, so they only need someone they think will allow the store to squeeze by... If a chain does go out of business, you better believe those at the top won't hurt. They will do well regardless.

Why not put the salary of the job upfront? I started working for a local government the salary is known before you even interview. The potential applicant can decide if they want to apply. No salary negotiations and all that just a predictable starting salary with predictable yearly raises.

I live in Kentucky and I had a manager who made $600 a week 80 hours a week no benefits so making 7.50 an hour B4 taxes. She got mad at the turnover rate was every 3 weeks because people didn't want to make only $8 an hr especially when paychecks were constantly late and there was absolutely zero benefits. Well I got a job making 16 an hour with fabulous benefits and I left and she was like good luck because it's just going to go all the taxes. Made 12 when I left there I bring home an extra $600 a month after taxes now and at work 4 days a week instead of 6. I told her she should be mad that she's being taken advantage of and not mad cuz people want more than $8 an hour in 2021. She'd get so mad when she'd interview someone and when they walked away because it started out at $8 an hour instead of 10 when all comparable businesses in the area paid $10 or more. Every time I drive by there now the manager's car is there from open to close no matter what day of week it is

When I worked for Family Dollar they didnt even want to give me a decent raise! I worked stock for 4 1/2 years but although I loved the job it wasnt fair. I got only a 25cent raise in all that time. I've walked away from a job interview before. No biggie to me. Keep looking baby. Know your worth and go get it. Last db retail place I applied offered less than $15 an hour. I laughed and walked out. Shook his hand and wished him luck. I now make $10 an hour MORE than they offered at a great company.

Going to say $21/h from family dollar is probably nit going to happen in most areas. 28 billion seams like a lot until you look at how bug the company is. Business of a similar size in a different sector are worth twice as much. Good for her on not settling though. If the offer isn't to your satisfaction and you have options don't take it. Did you ask how much they were willing to pay? If you're close then point that out to them and be assertive about what a great value you would be to the company. If you're far apart, don't waste your time with them. There are 1000s of jobs available and you WILL find an employer that will want to hire you for that amount. Workers think they have the upper hand. Too many people have been fed the garbage about how special they are and deserve luxuries for little effort and no real skills. This won't last much longer. I haven't hired in over a year because I'm sick of entitled wannabes pretending to have the skills and work ethic and finding out they either have no skills or their skills are so horrible and all of their work ethic is garbage. It's not worth my time or money. But they all want top pay, though. People need to get off their high horse and back to reality. No one owes anyone anything. If you're willing to work, put in the time and hone your skills, you will become a valuable asset. Until then, you'll just keep bouncing from interview to interview and job to job.

Sounds like she went into mindset to that job interview like if you don't pay me $21 an hour I'm out of here and everybody sitting there saying the CEOs and higher ups they're making this amount of money this year well I tell you what you go start a big business you go dumping 50 to 100 million dollars and the product for business you go get all the licenses all the permits you get insurance on your building you get somebody to do your payroll and then you can pay people 25 to $35 an hour I only remember if that business was to go under or bad fire was to go out and put that place out of business for a while the workers can just go get another job somewhere.

Direct and straight to the point. No need to play games, tell them what you want and why it’s fair and if they don’t want to pay then they can not fill the role with qualified people. It’s as simple as that. Women get low balled all the time when it comes to pay and for some unholy reason they are less likely to argue cause they don’t want to be confrontational. Guess what? Confrontation is healthy because it establishes respect and boundaries. You do it once maybe twice and people will know not to play with you. And it’s worth it. She thinks she's special because she got up and left without trying to negotiate? Businesses are desperate for employees right now. There is a lot of negotiating power in the market currently, so she's not wrong to keep searching. However, if she doesn't have another job already, I'd personally take it just to put manager on my resume and keep searching in the meantime. But, I guess it is more satisfying to storm out, if not particularly mature haha. I personally don't like to burn professional bridges though, you never know what might happen.

Hope she gets a better offer. My only quibble is she talks about manager pay scale, not assistant manager scale when the latter is the position she was applying for. Also I might have responded by saying why can't you start higher, if I can get sales up and costs down, what incentives are you prepared to offer me? There doesn't seem to be any sense of this is what I can do for you and why I am worth X rather than Y. No one cares what the CEO makes, you're the assistant manager at the left turn in Albuquerque store; what do you have to offer there, then you can work your way up to become a wildly overpaid CEO someday.

I make $16 dollars an hour at my job. If you want more than $21 dollars an hour to be a manager at a family dollar store, you better be SUPER GOOD at your job. That means excellent customer service skills, and top notch employee communication skills. You have to be a good salesman or woman, and know how to setup the store. Sometimes it means having to think on your feet such as dealing with rowdy or rude customers. Your past employment shows if you are worth $21 dollars an hour. Ever since covid started, people became lazy and greedy. They want a job that pays $20 bucks an hour to stand around or do very little. More often they say, "But if you pay people more, then that extra cost gets passed along to the consumer." Worst part is how CEO salaries are decided. The industry has a "standard" amount but you never want a random joe as your top guy so you pay enough to buy them out of your competitor's hands. And it just keeps circling up like that and no one ever (basically) gets any lower than what they ask. Usually it's higher. And men get paid higher on average, so why don't we just go ahead and blame all CEOs but especially the male ones who keep it circling the tower?

That's one reason we're making so little. They are busy making everyone feel guilty for asking for pay they deserve. I think 2 things made this get worse before people started standing up for themselves: (1) credit started getting easier to get in the 80's/90's so people just racked up credit cards instead of asking for raises (2) women entered the workforce in even larger numbers so their salaries were a buffer for the family. Meaning most people didn't get desperate until recently. I'm really worried right now with the housing situation & the groceries going up.

I believe some states, only a very few, are starting to require companies to include compensation in the job posting. I think you're right that transparency allows people to make an informed decision of whether they want to spend time exploring an opportunity. By default it also spares the interviewer's time.

As an ex retail worker, manger, store manager, office manager, and also as skilled laborer in three different careers, I never got close until now at $21 an hour starting. My new and current job, which is 4 minutes from home, 9-530, with insurance and pto, health dental vision, advertised at $20 an hour. I busted my butt to get an interview (of course after weeks of online application, follow up emails, phone calls, finally an in person appt was made. I got the position. Now if I master skills I will get pay increases in $2 amounts for each. I do furniture repair for a name brand north east coast company. In a warehouse. On my feet. Hand and eye and tool skills. I feel fairly paid. Other jobs have promised x amount and etc with full time only to come up short on the wage or hours or actuality of what the role would encompass. Stand your ground. Earn what you deserve to be paid. And if you can't then reevaluate what you want to be doing as a career.

I just put in my 2 weeks notice at a retail job that I've had for almost 11 years. I'm a manager at a grocery store and am constantly covering 4 to 5 call offs on top of all the other work I'm expected to do, not to mention the constant abuse from customers. Another manager quit and their work landed on me so I asked for a pay raise. I currently make 20 an hour after 11 years with this company. They didn't bother hearing me out, they said no, so I politely handed in my resignation. No more! They then offered me a dollar raise and I said not good enough. My last day is Saturday and management has been pulling me into their office begging me to stay on but unable to offer me more money.

I work for an 8 million dollar company and make $20.5/hr plus OT plus a monthly performance bonus and I'm not even a manager. Why wouldn't a multi billion dollar company pay a manager $21/hr?

I want to start thinking by the minute. There are 60 minutes in an hour. Think of how much work you can do in a minute. Think about how much you'd like to make for that minute of work. Now think about how much you can do in 5 minutes. Would you do 5 min of work for $2? Would you think that's too much? Too little? Just right? Or would you expect at least $5 for that 5 min of work? Would that be too much? Too little? Or just right? $5 for every 5 min worked would be $60/hr. Now think about being paid what you're being paid now and all things that are worth working all those hours and minutes.

Yeah and they have multiple stores or large ones with extensive knowledge above some kids toys, plastic cups and paper plates that need to be ordered. Most are salary and it's just averaged out hourly. Take your yearly salary and multiply it by 2,080 and that will give your hourly rate.

And people need to understand that! It’s reality! And at the end of the day that’s not a career move there are stores that pay that amount for that position but the dollar store is not one of them! Not to mention maybe that location specifically cannot offer that amount. I have worked in retail as an associate and a manager. Different locations were able to make different salary offers. Fast forward to my career transition into an office of the second largest bus dealership in the country (multi locations) I was paid significantly more than my counterparts. I also received additional benefits and flexibility based on location. There are a ton of parameters that guide salary, schedule, etc. not saying the pay issue is right but I’m painting a picture.

I couldn't see anyone working at a Family Dollar store making $21 per hour. Every time I go into one of these stores it is always a big unorganized mess and dirty. Most of the time the items on sale are not available, this even happened before the pandemic. If you are a store mgr you should know how to order enough stock to last until your next truck comes in. The customer service is terrible and they are very rude, I suppose they don't understand their paychecks do come from customers.

I made 7.50 an hour as an assistant manager in 2010. Since minimum wage was 7.35, it made sense to them. I was a desperate mom at the time. But considering minimum wage hasn’t changed, they probably haven’t adjusted their wages much.

I don't understand why she didn't ask for a salary of say $45k a year instead of an hourly wage..That $21 dollars she asked for adds up to $61k a year. And it doesn't take into consideration that most retail managers work 10-12 hours a day not 8. So she is asking for close to $70k a year to be a co manager of a dollar general store? Try Walmart or a large grocery chain if you want to make that kind of money but make sure you have plenty of experience and a college degree helps too.

I was hired by a restaurant in S.E. Kansas making $4 hr. When the pandemic hit, I was promoted to manager with a.50¢ raise ($4.50hr.). The owners decided to open a new restaurant in Iowa and wanted me to run the new restaurant. Not wanting to live in Iowa, I raised the stakes a bit. I told them that in order for me to move to Iowa and run their restaurant, I would need the following: $9 hr. PLUS my housing, utilities, internet, and meals paid for. I figured that would be a fair trade. This is in fall, 2020. They were fine with my request until January 2021. Then suddenly the owners wanted me to downsize my staff from 18 ppl to 6 ppl. and they also informed me that I would be taking a pay cut, from $9hr. to $4.50hr. long story short, I left. When I left, so did my staff. Been happier and healthier ever since. 😎

Family Dollar is a real shock operation. I hate saying if you seen some of the employees they have? They cater to what is known as the downwardly mobile. I would expect that they probably wouldn't pay a store manager more than probably about 15 to $16 an hour which is why if you've seen the store managers they're not exactly the brightest group in the bunch.

Was sympathetic to this until she included "wrong bi*ch*" But you see they way it works is that you take what they offer or you offer yourself elsewhere. When you end like she did it feels like you feel they are obligated to your expectations. They are not just as you are not obligated to theirs. Additionally with all the comments backing up this person... Is their any indication she's worth her asking? Is she a good manager? Does she have a record of positivity at past positions. A position isn't where the worth is. The worth is in the person holding the position. Maybe it's not 21 they can't do but maybe it's 21 they can't do for her. If she has little experience or just experience that isn't that exciting... Maybe the next person brings more success to the interview and gets 25. Stop valuing jobs by a position and start valuing yourself. Are you worth what you're asking?

That's the problem . Weak desperate people accepting low pay they depend and love people like that. They love to low pay them while eceos make 3.5 million. If more people weren't such desperate slave minded individuals we could force these places to pay a living wage instead of a slave wage.

I'm a manager at Five Below and make $11.50 an hour. I want to quit because the amount I get paid vs. the amount of work I do just isn't worth it. I've sunk back into a deep depression and am starting to experience a mental burnout. At this point I've started to do the bare minimum in a "This is what $11.50/hour looks like work wise." way. I'm kind of hoping to get fired. It's not looking like that'll happen unless I just become completely incompetent at my job but, we'll see I guess. 🤷🏾‍♀️

It was an assistant managers job, not a managers job as the story compared oranges to apples on the wages. She was over qualified and had higher expectations while they were looking for entry level. Nothing really to see here.

For many, MANY years, the labor market was a buyer's market. Employers had the upper hand and were able to call the shots. Now FINALLY, after many decades of this, the balance of power has finally shifted somewhat toward the employee. But as we have seen, it will take some time for employers to get used to the idea and stop expecting employees to work for peanuts.

You know what was missing from this story? What relevant experience and education she has for the job. I am a recruiter and time and time again I see applicants who can't even put on a button up shirt, no job outside of working as a dish washer or fry cook, barely has a high school education from 10yrs ago coming at me like they deserve $25+/hr. You got me F***ed up. Please explain to me why you, who barely meets the basic requirements for the job deserve to make $25+/hr.... I'll wait.... In Washington state the minimum wage is $14.49 please tell me why your no skills havin a** deserves almost $10 over the minimum wage for the state? I would much rather spend time sifting through the dirt until I find that one diamond, any day, than go through hundreds of employees and thousands of hours of training worthless dirt applicants with no education and no skills. It's dollar general for crying out loud! Certainly degrees and experience count for something, but it's dollar general! $21 for such a job is a gift! Wake up and smell what you're shoveling. If you really are worth $21 an hour you need to aim higher than a dollar store. A CEO generally makes a whole lot more than the entry level positions. That's why they are the CEO. They make decisions a little more important to the company's success or failure than someone who just showed up one day and said, "give me". You want livable wages? Finish school. Judging by the poor grammar and spelling in the comments here it's likely many of you did not. That is step one. Step two, don't live outside your means. Having children is expensive. Having children without a stable career, home, health and life insurance is just irresponsible. Crying about what you don't have because you are irresponsible is just sad. Thank you! People today need to step down off their personal entitlement pedestal. They think they are worth so much more but usually bring nothing to the table. They want the easy job in a cozy building and make $45k a year and then some. In early-mid 2000s I was making $11/hr in construction and raising my daughter solo. People today have no concept of worth and managing money. They think they should walk into a low skill, entry level job and have a nice house, new car and all kinds of toys.

I feel ya. I was forced to resign from my last job because my boss said he, "realizes that he has been treating me like a complete a*****e". Those were his own words and he admitted it. When HR decided to support his disgusting behavior, I resigned. Now, after 35 yrs working in the field of Chemistry, companies are sending me entry level position offers. Nope, sorry, not going to happen. They want 35 yrs of experience and talent for barely minimum wage? Nope, sorry. I'll work security before I let them take advantage of me that way.

That's my motto. Take your skills to a company that will pay you more. This is why I make sure I ALWAYS have 6 months worth of emergency fund saved back to find the job I want and have earned. Not one I'm forced to take out of desperation. There are thousands and thousands of jobs out there. Just gotta look.

I successfully negotiated my starting salary before and a substantial raise a year later. If you know your value, stand your ground. Quit if they won’t pay enough or do what she did , turn them down. Hopefully, they will learn a lesson.

What is real work lol,? Construction get paid like $30 a hr that's real work. I sit all day doing part time security armed for $24 a hour . You pick what you want you sound bitter but it's in you if you want a easier job. I worked in factories before which is real work cutting steak for $16 a hour I had a couple of factory jobs that felt like I was suffering and I hated it. I found something a lot easier and pays more. I also personal train out my basement for $40 a hr. Love what I do now. Pick your fate it's in your hands.

This only applies to certain job markets, namely service workers. I have three degrees in biology, marine biology and natural resources. For all the experience I have working outdoors, in dangerous circumstances (anyone been stuck waist deep in quick sinking mud of ocean bays at 5 am?), I don't get offers above $20 an hour. These are government jobs. I just accepted a position living in a remote cabin in Alaska, hours extending from sun up to sun down (6am-11pm) , 20 meters from grizzly bears daily.Ihave to do gun training and everything. $19 an hour. So forgive me if I roll my eyes at an office worker grumbling about not making $20+. My first job was dollar tree, I've worked in restaurants, and I'm telling you, it's not that hard. There are many jobs that have to deal with sh!**y people, including when I was doing marine mammology surveys (do you know how angry the public gets when your group has no choice but to euthanize a beached whale for it's own interest?). Ugh, you have no idea

This is also a case of buyers remorse you got 3 science degrees that don't actually "produce" anything but "data" when put together and the "data" is not inherently profitable its what's known as capitalism you just don't "produce" anything worth of value to anyone with any amount of money to spend on that "data". Anyone who thinks a person should just accept $10 or $15 or $20 an hour should stop typing, imagine you are paid that wage, and then make a budget for yourself, using 2022 numbers for cost of living, gas prices, rent, food, etc. instead of your pipe dream idea that you could find a place to live for $500/month if you were willing to make sacrifices. You make that budget, and then tell me if you would say "yeah that's fair" if anyone told you to take a job at that amount.

in order for a retail workers (or any other industry with historically at or near minimum wages) to make decent wages, you first have to change the minds of greedy Company CEOs, shareholders, etc. and fat chance of that happening. Why do you think so much stuff is made in sweat shops outside of the US? They won't just wake up and realize that they have to treat employees better when they can't get anyone to work for them, they will just send the job to some 8 year old Chinese kid who will do it for a few nickles a day.

It is supply and demand. Nothing more. If everyone asks for $21, they will pay $21. However, to just walk out the way it was described the interviewer must be happy to see the back of her. Who wants to work with somebody like that? Would anyone here who supports her actions want to hire her if you are the owner of the business? Imagine her bringing toxicity to your other employees.

I love seeing articles and stories on this topic and mostly for the people involved. This woman demanded (and feels she's worth) $21/hr to be a store manager at family dollar. Yet, this woman doesn't even conduct herself professionally (in response to hearing a "no" to her salary request) during the interview. These days professionalism is dead and it's usually the people are who are least professional that have the highest demands and sense of entitlement. Also, this woman mentions in the comments that she has "degrees". If this person MULTIPLE college degress then why is she applying for an hourly position at Family Dollar anyway. People are ridiculous.

If she has a business degree why is she going to family Dollar looking for a job? No where in the article did I see it mention where she is? Cost of living differs as does taxation state to State so perhaps $21 an hour is not feasible in that area. If she lives in California, New York or Chicago then it would not be unreasonable to ask for that level of pay.

First off,I think I missed something because while reading this whole article I was thinking this was a GM role and being the store manager and I was like woah, yea she should be making over 21 for sure, but then I saw assistant manager in the comments and don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's nothing but the national average for store managers are taking into account best buys and targets and Walmarts and those are much more work then a dollar tree and I know from experience unless your the GM at one of those places even the assistant manager makes pretty low amount and those are big box retailers so yea I don't see you making over 20 to start at a family dollar store just based on similar positions. If you have a degree in management or similar work experience background to add to your resume you can do better anyways! Go somewhere you can make good money. If you don't have experience you got two options. 1 pay to get that degree 2 get underpaid to get that experience. Good luck

And how far back before you are you referring to? I was born in 1980 and I was raised with a real work ethic. I didn't get where I am today by crying and complaining for handouts. I built my skills from the start of being an employee as a teenager. By 25, I was raising my 1yr old daughter by myself on $11/hr for a skilled job and paying $675/mo for our house. Don't get me started on daycare and childcare expenses. People today need to learn a real work ethic and how to manage their money. These last generations are too spoiled and think that having all the toys and luxuries the rest of worked for should be given to them with little effort on their end just because they are alive. Younger groups today are nothing but spoiled, entitled, whining babies. We're all about to suffer for the next 30yrs+ because these younger generations are going to contribute very little to our society and economy.

My question is, is Dollar General and Dollar tree non-franchise. Because people forget Franchise establishments are different then corporate. Which takes in fees with minimal employee overhead. It is the dude that owns the business paying employee wages and depending on the size of the town he MIGHT NOT be able to afford 21 an hour.

Yeah, 'like' good luck to whoever does hire her. Hourly rate is not the sole consideration. You have to consider insurance, vacation, sick pay, retirement, profit sharing, bonuses, etc. Those also figure in to your hourly rate when paid for by the company.

I understand her feelings/attitude...and still, she could have spent an extra minute, or two, to find out what he was willing to offer. It wouldn't have stopped her from declining. At least she would have known the dollar figure she was saying no to. What isn't apparent is whether or not any benefits were offered. Considering it is Fmly$, probably none. Additionally, places like this are not looking for longtime employees. They treat them as disposable. They only look for the right-now employees to kick the store a little further down the time line and keep the dough rolling in and the upper echelon plush and comfy. Their customers for the most part do not have high expectations either, so they only need someone they think will allow the store to squeeze by... If a chain does go out of business, you better believe those at the top won't hurt. They will do well regardless.

Why not put the salary of the job upfront? I started working for a local government the salary is known before you even interview. The potential applicant can decide if they want to apply. No salary negotiations and all that just a predictable starting salary with predictable yearly raises.

I live in Kentucky and I had a manager who made $600 a week 80 hours a week no benefits so making 7.50 an hour B4 taxes. She got mad at the turnover rate was every 3 weeks because people didn't want to make only $8 an hr especially when paychecks were constantly late and there was absolutely zero benefits. Well I got a job making 16 an hour with fabulous benefits and I left and she was like good luck because it's just going to go all the taxes. Made 12 when I left there I bring home an extra $600 a month after taxes now and at work 4 days a week instead of 6. I told her she should be mad that she's being taken advantage of and not mad cuz people want more than $8 an hour in 2021. She'd get so mad when she'd interview someone and when they walked away because it started out at $8 an hour instead of 10 when all comparable businesses in the area paid $10 or more. Every time I drive by there now the manager's car is there from open to close no matter what day of week it is

When I worked for Family Dollar they didnt even want to give me a decent raise! I worked stock for 4 1/2 years but although I loved the job it wasnt fair. I got only a 25cent raise in all that time. I left soon after that. Now that EVERYTHING is going up they think people will still take low wages? No waaay

I've walked away from a job interview before. No biggie to me. Keep looking baby. Know your worth and go get it. Last db retail place I applied offered less than $15 an hour. I laughed and walked out. Shook his hand and wished him luck. I now make $10 an hour MORE than they offered at a great company.

Going to say $21/h from family dollar is probably nit going to happen in most areas. 28 billion seams like a lot until you look at how bug the company is. Business of a similar size in a different sector are worth twice as much. Good for her on not settling though. If the offer isn't to your satisfaction and you have options don't take it. If you don't have options take the beat you can and keep looking for a better option

Did you ask how much they were willing to pay? If you're close then point that out to them and be assertive about what a great value you would be to the company. If you're far apart, don't waste your time with them. There are 1000s of jobs available and you WILL find an employer that will want to hire you for that amount. Workers have the upper hand in this environment as employers are desperate to bring quality people. Stand firm and assert that is what you require based on what your responsibilities would be. Workers think they have the upper hand. Too many people have been fed the garbage about how special they are and deserve luxuries for little effort and no real skills. This won't last much longer. I haven't hired in over a year because I'm sick of entitled wannabes pretending to have the skills and work ethic and finding out they either have no skills or their skills are so horrible and all of their work ethic is garbage. It's not worth my time or money. But they all want top pay, though. People need to get off their high horse and back to reality. No one owes anyone anything. If you're willing to work, put in the time and hone your skills, you will become a valuable asset. Until then, you'll just keep bouncing from interview to interview and job to job.

Sounds like she went into mindset to that job interview like if you don't pay me $21 an hour I'm out of here and everybody sitting there saying the CEOs and higher ups they're making this amount of money this year well I tell you what you go start a big business you go dumping 50 to 100 million dollars and the product for business you go get all the licenses all the permits you get insurance on your building you get somebody to do your payroll and then you can pay people 25 to $35 an hour I only remember if that business was to go under or bad fire was to go out and put that place out of business for a while the workers can just go get another job somewhere.

Direct and straight to the point. No need to play games, tell them what you want and why it’s fair and if they don’t want to pay then they can not fill the role with qualified people. It’s as simple as that. Women get low balled all the time when it comes to pay and for some unholy reason they are less likely to argue cause they don’t want to be confrontational. Guess what? Confrontation is healthy because it establishes respect and boundaries. You do it once maybe twice and people will know not to play with you. And it’s worth it. She thinks she's special because she got up and left without trying to negotiate? Businesses are desperate for employees right now. There is a lot of negotiating power in the market currently, so she's not wrong to keep searching. However, if she doesn't have another job already, I'd personally take it just to put manager on my resume and keep searching in the meantime. But, I guess it is more satisfying to storm out, if not particularly mature haha. I personally don't like to burn professional bridges though, you never know what might happen.

Hope she gets a better offer. My only quibble is she talks about manager pay scale, not assistant manager scale when the latter is the position she was applying for. Also I might have responded by saying why can't you start higher, if I can get sales up and costs down, what incentives are you prepared to offer me? There doesn't seem to be any sense of this is what I can do for you and why I am worth X rather than Y. No one cares what the CEO makes, you're the assistant manager at the left turn in Albuquerque store; what do you have to offer there, then you can work your way up to become a wildly overpaid CEO someday.

I make $16 dollars an hour at my job. If you want more than $21 dollars an hour to be a manager at a family dollar store, you better be SUPER GOOD at your job. That means excellent customer service skills, and top notch employee communication skills. You have to be a good salesman or woman, and know how to setup the store. Sometimes it means having to think on your feet such as dealing with rowdy or rude customers. Your past employment shows if you are worth $21 dollars an hour. Ever since covid started, people became lazy and greedy. They want a job that pays $20 bucks an hour to stand around or do very little. This whole covid lazy greedy people and your stupid a*s joe biden president has me pissed off.
