Woman Violates A Gym’s Dress Code By Wearing A Sports Bra, Gets Fat-Shamed By The Staff And Kicked Out

Interview
ADVERTISEMENT

It takes a lot of courage to go to the gym and work on your health knowing that some people will judge you. What doesn’t help is when the staff members belittle you and embarrass you, throwing you out. Canadian mom Shelby Rodriguez went viral when she shared how she was unceremoniously asked to leave the gym because of the way that she was dressed, in a series of TikTok videos. And this was after she’d already gotten permission to work out in her sports bra for the day from the administrator.

I had an in-depth and open chat with Shelby about what happened, what the reaction on social media was like, and how she still finds the drive to keep working out even when so many people poked fun at her. The core of the problem wasn’t even the gym’s dress code (no sports bras allowed) but the way the entire situation was handled. A bit more grace, a bit more tact and understanding from the staff wouldn’t have gone amiss.

“While I understand I was not completely in the right by making the mistake of wearing the sports bra in the first place, the gym also handled the situation badly,” Shelby told Bored Panda. The internet was split on how to react: while many supported the mom, others thought that she was being overly dramatic. Some even went as far as making fun of her for crying which, frankly, is far from ok.

“I had a TikTok video with almost 2 million views, with hundreds of people telling me I’m just a crybaby (along with even more amazing and supportive comments), and I’m still going back to that same gym. I’m not giving up,” she said. Now that’s real dedication and the type of courage that I honestly admire. You’ll find my full interview with Shelby below.

Shelby, from Canada, shared how she was utterly embarrassed by the employees at her gym

Shelby believes that better employee training would definitely make a difference in how similar situations regarding the dress code are handled in the future. The rules are there for a reason, but when one staff member tells you that you can stay while another tells you to get out, it can quickly become overwhelming for someone who spent less than a week at the gym.

“I spoke to the manager of the gym on the phone after the incident, and he said that their policy IS actually to tell people to just wear something else the next time,” Shelby pointed out to Bored Panda that there was quite a lot of miscommunication among the employees the day of the incident.

“When I was spoken to a second time by a second employee, I explained what had happened when I arrived and said, ‘The lady at the front desk said it was alright for this time’ and held up my wrist, showing my wrist band,” she told us what happened.

“I don’t know why, but she just kept repeating herself, ‘Well you just can’t be here wearing that,’ no matter how many times I tried to explain and again show the wrist band. This went on until I was emotional and didn’t know what else to do but leave, it was clear that I wasn’t welcome.”

Better training essentially comes down to more communication between gym employees. Without communication, any business is doomed from the start. “She could have easily spoken to the first lady herself but instead she berated me, the patron at the gym.”

The mom went into more detail in a series of her TikTok videos

@shelby.bellzidk why I’m even posting this #fatshaming #weightloss #weightlossjourney #bodyimage #bodypositivity #weightlosstiktok #weightlossforwomen #foryoupage♬ original sound – shelby 𖥸

@shelby.bellzReply to @shelby.bellz thank you thank you thank you #bodypositivity #bodyimage #weightlossjourney #weightlosstiktok #weightlossforwomen #foryoupage♬ original sound – shelby 𖥸

I also wanted to get Shelby’s opinion about why so many people still fat-shame others instead of being supportive and, well, decent human beings. “I think people are uncomfortable seeing larger bodies, especially people who have larger bodies and are comfortable wearing things like crop tops,” Shelby said.

Unfortunately, there are no easy answers as to how things can change. She suggested that one of the things that we can do is judging others less for what they wear. Especially at the gym where everyone’s doing their gosh darn best to live a healthier lifestyle.

“I don’t think there is a simple answer to what needs to happen for change at a societal level, the issue is so extremely complex and something that has been going on since before I was even born. But I think a great first step is not caring what others wear into the gym, as long as they are comfortable.”

Finally, Shelby shared some words of encouragement for everyone and anyone who’s exercising but finding it challenging. “Keep going even when something brings you down. Don’t let small bumps in the road make huge ripples in your life,” she said to focus on the bigger picture, not the minute details that truly don’t matter.

Shelby isn’t a fan of motivation. She, just like I do, believes that discipline and dedication are what help you reach your goals, not something as fickle as motivation. “I love the term, ‘Dedication not motivation’ because it’s so true. Motivation comes and goes, but if you stay dedicated even when you’re not motivated, you’ll get where you want to be.” Tried and tested, dear Pandas, tried and tested.

Despite what happened and some of the criticism Shelby received online, she’s continuing to work out with great enthusiasm

I am 100% certain that there is much more to this story than just her side. I refrain from making any judgements until I hear the other side too. Far too many people are full of shite on social media just to get attention.

Surely the policy applies to everyone irrespective of their shape or weight? Presumably men are not allowed to go shirtless?

I just don't feel right about people going on tiktok straight away to cry about everything that happens in their lives like this. What was the world doing before tiktok? There are a number of challenging things that happens on a daily basis to us but we deal with it in a private manner. I have been called pregnant with several kids (I'm not & I don't have, I weigh 42kgs) by my boxing instructor because as Asian, the standard of beauty is a stick and I'm considered obese and made to feel this all my life. I laughed, understand it but told him not to destroy my confidence more. Made him understand how this is going to damage me. Adult conversation. I did not make a Tiktok. I did not feel the need to complain to management. The boxing instructor gave me a HUGE discount on my monthly. We are friends now, I look great! There are several ways to deal with a situation

I too am asked several times by a loud- mouthed resident if I am expecting. I told him in an equally loud voice no I am not. I am just fat and it is my post partum belly for 11 years. I will not be apologetic for my body shape. I try my best to live a healthy lifestyle, my heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol count are okay and if my belly protrudes so be it. It’s not my problem.

Where is the fat shaming? It is against the rules for a few reasons such as sweat on the machines and bacteria. I missed the lines where they said it was for being fat? The manager should have apologized that the employee was mistaken (in a way not to shame the emplpyee) because they have rules to uphold and if they let it slide once they let it slide 100 times.

It's strange that a gym shames the people they need to exist. Way to go for the bigotted bastards that run that place. They really do need to be named and shamed.

With no actual facts, except her story on the internet, why do you want to shame & name the gym? Wanting to public shame an establishement only because of an online statement & no actual facts is wrong.

That is not logical. She could had shown up twice in a regular top and on the third time grabbed her sports bra. PLUS, they gave her permission to be there. If they had said no to her initially, she could had gone home and changed.

AT every gym i have been to, at least in my country, you are not allowed to be in just a croptop and men are not allowedto be shirtless. It's a very hot country, no one appreciates your sweaty skin touching everything even with the wipes we have to wipe down before/after. However, they defo have more class in how they handle if anyone were to show up shirtless. The only time i have seen anyone get thrown out was because they were refusing to use a towel and man that's nasty.

If the no-sports bra rule is equally applied, it's fine, but the 'Tummy hanging out' remark is cruel. It's hard to go to a gym where you feel judged for not having a perfect body.

Is this a policy for ALL gymgoers? Cause if it is, then that's just them enforcing their policy. But the comment by the receptionist about her belly 'hanging out' is indefensible.

In my opinion, the way people look, behave, or think, unless it directly affect us, has got nothing to do with us. Let others be. Live your own life, so they can live theirs. Unless they ask for it, support can be patronizing I think. Mind your own business, stop criticizing every little thing and the world will work better.

Dear Haters: This incident occurred in Canada, and the gym in question had a *midriff-bared* person on their advertising. Ergo, the woman had some degree of belief she might bare her midriff without censure. The gym has yet to comment publicly that I have found, so while you may be upset that it's "just someone on TikTok/Reddit", she was told her top was okay for that day, since she didn't know the dress code, only to be told 15 minutes later to get out of the gym. There's your story. Have a nice day.

I wouldn't like to talk for anyone else, but bra strikes me as underwear and it would not even come on my mind to use that as only thing on me anywhere on public place... Gym where I went had dress code clear, any part of your body touching equipment other than arms and legs had to be covered. Fit guys were sent home for wearing tank tops. I did not see any woman wearing only bra. I really thought was exclusively commercial thing, not real.

Someone once pointed out that making fun of an overweight person at the gym is like mocking a homeless person at a job fair. It is a catch-22. You don't want to go because you're embarrassed about how you look. But at the same time, the only way to change that (unless you have the space and funds for home equipment) is by going to the gym.

Wait, this wasn’t about now wearing a sports bra, but about not exposing your abdomen. Normal people wear sport bras under their shirt, which is fine, but she’s only wearing a bra (well, more like a simple top, doesn’t even look like a sports bra). I can see why that’s not allowed. Weird title.

Does the rule also apply for skinny girls? I'm sorry, maybe it's because I am from Europe and we see things different here, but I can't ignore the irony of not being allowed to wear "sports" bra to actually exercise... One would say that's what sport bras are for...

in my gym yes, it doesn't matter if you are skinny or big or fit or sagging, without a shirt, man or woman , you are not allowed to work out and sweat all over the place. I am from the europe as well and this has always been a rule at every gym i have been at.

Nah, I'm with the gym on this one. Every gym or community center I've ever been to has had dress code requirements posted multiple times in numerous different places. The polite thing to do would have been to go home and grab a shirt, not whine when you break the rules and get kicked out

I use to be 5'3 102 lbs . I can say right now even when skinny i was still held to dress codes, i gained 90 lbs after my son . I noticed i was actually shamed less after gaining weight. so to be clear im now 5'3 200 lbs and i get less people shaming me. I don't think thicker people realize that the skinny ones get shamed as well by a lot of women who don't like that they are thin. I don't know if they see them as a threat or if it was jealousy . I did get WAY more hate and judgment when I was skinny mostly by other women . I honestly do feel like this girl was dramatic and turned it into something it wasn't .

I were several times in the gym. I mean. Yeah, im fat, at that time I weight something about 130kilograms, so yeah... but, that was the reason why i was there right... And the girls who had beet there longer time than me, much skinnier and perrier than me were walking around me and giggling, saying that hippos should be in the zoo, that I should rather go to eat my doughnuts instead of embarrasing myself there. At the showers they have been slipping notes like how disgusting I am, that I have mold on my folds on body, that I smelled so bad... well, yeah they win. I stopped going there.

While I believe she has every right to her feelings and emotions, she has to learn to live in a world where those feelings and emotions might be hurt. The world is not rainbows and butterflies, it's full of nails and unpleasant things. Never, ever, ever shame anyone for being themselves at the gym. As a qualified trainer I advise people that they should arrive in clothing they feel comfortable in and wont hinder their movement. It takes a lot of courage for people to walk into a gym for the first time, and it breaks my heart that she was treated like this. Name and shame rather than post a video crying though is my advice.

In other words, she's refusing to take responsibility for her own failure to wear the proper workout clothes, and trying to play the Victim and get some social media likes. There's no "shaming" involved, wear the required clothing. Stop Blaming everyone else because you don't want to comply with the rules. Don't like the rules? Go elsewhere. Start your own gym.

I'm from Canada, this sounds typical. In other words if you are chubby don't come we will make it as uncomfortable for you as we can we want only well built and disciplined people in here. Like I was told Hey blubber tubber you cant be in here. The rules should be told up front (before they get your money). Staff should be taught mostly from parents and the business that you do not treat people this way! Some one should open a gym just for we blubber tubbers and stating the only ones in the building that have reasonably good bodies are the staff.

This is bullshit, the 18yr-old skinny girls wear booty shorts that barely covers their ass cheeks and seethrough sports bras to the gym all the damn time and NEVER get called out. This is pure fat shaming, her stomach was barely showing, there was only 3inches of skin visible, and she gets called out? I need to know the name of this gym so I can cancel their asses and ruin them on yelp. She's a mother who just wants to lose some baby weight and how dare they treat her like that and shame her for having stretch marks instead of teen abs. I will destroy this gym.

It doesn't mean you can't wear a sports bra at all but that you can't be wearing only a sports bra as a top.

This is pure fat shaming, her stomach was barely showing, there was only 3inches of skin visible, and she gets called out?
