“She Calls Me Selfish”: Spoiled Mother Wants An $8k Baby Crib, Her Sister Refuses, Starting A Family Drama

A new entry to the famous ‘Am I the [Jerk]?’ subreddit has just gone viral, reminding everyone that we can’t choose our family. Or how greedy they are.

A woman with a now-deleted Reddit account was invited to her sister’s baby shower. Knowing that the expectant mother had a crib on her wishlist, she planned to give her the barely used one she already had.

Only her sister wouldn’t accept it. Turns out, she already had a design in mind and she wasn’t willing to settle for anything less.

After finding out that particular crib cost over $8,000, the ex-Redditor refused to spend so much money on a gift and was immediately uninvited from the event.

Finding the right gift for a baby shower is a tough task

The etiquette of how much to spend on a baby shower gift is usually determined by numerous factors, including:

1. Your relationship with the person — the closer you are to the soon-to-be mom the more likely you are to spend on her;

2. How much do you feel comfortable giving — just because someone else says you should spend a certain amount doesn’t mean you have to;

3. How much you can afford to give — you simply shouldn’t put yourself in financial hardship buying baby shower presents.

And yes, babies are expensive. (According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average cost of raising a child to age 18 in 2015 was $233,610. So with an annual adjustment for inflation of 2.2% each year factored in, the cost of raising a child born in 2022 could be estimated at $272,049.) But over $8,000 for a crib? That’s just ridiculous.

Many parents agree a less expensive model of a crib or a used one works just fine. As long as it conforms to current safety standards, you can find plenty of options that suit your budget and nursery. A convertible crib that transforms into a toddler bed may tempt you into thinking you can save even more, but often you can buy both a crib and a toddler bed for less than an expensive model that converts. If new parents want to splurge on something, a good-quality mattress is probably a better choice.

People declared the author of the story was not the jerk

Came down to comment to ask if “hammy downs” is new internet slang like good boi and chonk cuz I’d never seen it before? Or is it another error in this “doggy dog world”?

I had to google the crib to see what the fuss is about.. that girl is insane! Btw my little girl sleeps in a hand me down crib with a new matress, about 15 years old, and she is the 4th child to sleep in it. No regrets in not buying her a new one.

I looked that crib up and I agree with Emme Magnolia - it's as ugly as it is overpriced. You'd have to be out of your mind or too rich to know any better - or both - to actually buy that eyesore. Sister sounds like a spoilt brat. I pity her kid to be, who will probably one day have to put up with BS like "Why didn't you buy me the $600 silk slippers I wanted for Mother's Day instead of giving me this stupid vase you hand-painted in art class? Don't you love your Mommy?? And stop crying! You're just as selfish as your aunt!"

Looked at the crib...it's hideous. It looks like a slated crate. No curves, no wood turnings, no adorable additions, just a walnut slated crate with a mattress in it. That kid is going to chew on that walnut when they start teething.

I think £200 would be a fair price for a decent crib £100 for frame and £100 for mattress. Any more than £500 seems excessive to me tbh

My sisters kid sleeps in the same crib we all slept in about 20 years ago. It's just cleaned, got a new paint job and and a new mattress. The thing looks like new, except for the design. Why would anyone spend that insane amount of money for a crib - not even my grandfathers hospital bed cost that much!

I think I have found said crib. ( https://nurseryworks.net/products/lydian-crib ) It really does not look particularly spectacular, although quite nice and I think that here the manufacturer earns pretty good on each sold copy. The price is really ridiculous, especially if you look at Walmart, for example, what is charged there for cribs. Even if it has to be a solid wood crib (the other crib was made of plywood, by the way) you get something really high quality with 1000$. Pretty sure you could get such a crib made cheaper than 9000$ by a trusted carpenter. (My whole bedroom set from a carpenter has cost less). Perhaps the creator of the thread should have suggested asking a carpenter how much a bed of this type made by him would cost.

For a sister or brother, just a nice gift is required (nice is in the $50 range), and parents are one and done for the first child, whatever their budget allows, but then save for their own future and not be a burden on the next generation.

Her sister be tripping - absolutely NO ONE needs a $9k crib. The baby sure won't notice. And it's not going to be resold for anywhere near what they'd pay for it. This is an all-around stupid ask and Mom is stupid enough to buy into this c**p. When she bankrupts them and they're stuck struggling to make due on social security once she's depleted their retirement funds, they're ALL gonna be in for a very rude awakening. Heaven help that poor kid with such a vapid, entitled, immature brat for a mother. And why the hell is there no mention of what the father of the child is buying or contributing towards the child's future needs?! My husband & I went to a local pregnancy center and took parenting classes for a few weeks for "baby bucks" that would be handed in for a brand new crib, car seat, AND crib mattress, ALL FOR FREE, that the center ordered from Walmart in our color choice that we just had to pick up once the ordered arrived at Walmart.

We got a cot that turns into a toddler bed, chest of draws, changing table and a cupboard for £700 when my son was born. It was a whole set. He has long outgrown the bed and changing table and now has a single bed. The draws and cupboard are still in use. The sister is nuts for wanting something so expensive.

If I had kids they'd be lucky if I bought an 8k crib for them (which I most definitely WOULD NOT) so I definitely wouldn't blow it on somebody else, even a sister. User is called selfish by a sister who wants that much spent is too ridiculous to even fathom. If a hand-me-down crib is still safe in working order, then that's what should be used. My grandmother had three kids within three years, they had to use drawers... so her being able to get a crib at all is something she should be grateful for. The kid is only going to use it for 3-4ish years and honestly maybe not even all the time. Some people are just way too entitled.

That must be some 'budget' your parents are living on if mom thinks a 9k crib makes sense. They raised her that way, let them foot the bill. I drive a 'used' car(low mileage, steal of a deal), my house was 'used' when I bought it and I've gotten some great 'used' furniture for it. For that matter, your sister with the bun in the oven...doesn't that make her 'used'? Unless mom and dad leave her set for life she might have some tough lessons down the road. You and siblings are wise to maintain some distance.

Lol NO. You can find a crib at ikea for 80€ and paint it whatever color you like ("sniglar" is perfect to paint!). Besides; none of my kids even used their cribs. They slept with us (breastfeeding is sooo much easier if you co-sleep or bedshare) until at least 18 months and then they can have a kids bed. Total waste of money. I can't believe people pay that much for a useless object.

I bought a barely used crib from a friend, for $35. My daughter slept in it, maybe 15% of the time. She was a breast fed baby, so she was always in the bed with me. At age 1, she graduated to a toddler bed. At age 4, she got a daybed. After I was finished with the crib, another friend bought it off of me, for $35. The spoiled daughter and the mom have a rude awakening. Reality is about to slap them hard in the face. Because baby's are expensive. With the mom and dad being on a budget, they're not going to be able to financially support a grown a*s spoiled brat, and her baby. To the poster of this article, "You and your siblings stick to your guns, and don't give in to your sisters entitlement"

On top of the already insane price of a crib, she wants to take a beautiful wood like walnut and paint it pink?! Then what the hell is the point of using walnut? It may as well be made out of fir or pine at that point, at least the price would drop drastically and the average person would probably be none the wiser once it was painted pink.

That has got to be the most hideous crib I've ever seen! I bought a gorgeous crib for about $300. I was more concerned with the best mattress to support her back. Your sister just wants bragging rights for a crib she can't afford. Nowhere is a husband/boyfriend mentioned, and I suspect the reason is no man can afford her. If your parents don't say ENOUGH, she's going to drain them dry. I'm sorry, but if you are grown enough to have a baby, you should be able to take care of it. That does NOT mean your parents support it. Also not fair to the other children and grandchildren that ONE family member gets treated like royalty. Ridiculous that she's been allowed to get away with not working if nothing is wrong with her. You & your other siblings need to have an intervention with your parents before she bankrupt them! Good luck!

OP and her siblings need to sit mom, dad, sis, and bil down for a chat. They need to make it clear that once mom & dad can no longer fund sis the siblings absolutely won't be stepping into that role. Maybe the parents/sis & bil haven't thought about what will happen once the parents die, and this conversation will be a very sobering one. Maybe they all assume the other siblings will step up out of a sense of family. I think now is a good time to dissuade them of that idea. It'll give sis time to either find a job or a sugar daddy. Or get comfortable with "hammy downs" 🤣

The mother and daughter here are spoiled rotten to think that the baby needs an $8000 crib! Just because the author can afford it, doesn't mean she should spend it. I'm glad she stuck to her guns. I proudly used a hand-me-down crib (1976). It was the one that my husband (1953) and his 2 siblings slept in. My great uncle did a beautiful job refinishing it. That meant so much to me. We would still have it for the grand babies, but it wasn’t up to current safety standards.

The reason the parents are on a limited budget now is because they blew every penny paying for everything for the younger sister- including her house (!?!?) So now that the gravy train is out of fuel, she just needs to get used to not getting everything she wants. This is just the beginning I promise. Next year it will be "but the baby DESERVES a full circus with trained elephants for her 1st birthday party!"

Sounds like her parents have a favorite daughter which is really messed up on its own. I know plenty of people who could also afford 8k for a crib but not a single one would actually consider buying it. They would laugh at the suggestion. It would be an ongoing joke between us. Sounds like their enabling parents are a major part of the problem as well. Playing favorites like they are is never ok.

That is absurd for a baby crib. At my family's budget most of our stuff comes from thrift stores or Walmart. I'm expecting in a few months and the only thing I insist on getting new is the carseat, (for safety reasons.) We got that at Walmart.

I remember with my first kid, we also did all kinds of research to get the "best" there is ... best stroller that supports baby's back, best chair-carry-thingie that won't cause posture problems ... so I can understand to want "the best". But to EXPECT something from other people is a whole other thing. We shelled out our own money and made concessions in other things so we could afford it. Time this lady learned the difference between "want" and "can afford".

When my grandson was on the way in the mid 90s, I gave his parents a subscription to a diaper service. DIL later said she thought it was strange at the time, but later, it was the best gift she got. They did use disposable diapers occasionally, but the cloth ones were easier on his skin. And the service was amazing.

7k for a crib is a waste. My son was in a used crib, in fact most of his clothes were hand me down for his 1st year. It gave me such joy to have these hand me downs. I washed them and hung them up outside to dry, I cried with joy. I could well afford a new crib and new clothes. Such sweet gifts my friends gave me knowing their little ones also wore them. When my son out grew them I past them on to the next baby. Things do not bring contentment just means more to take care of. For my gift from my mom she hand made bibs for my baby that she hand embroidered. Contentment only comes from a living relationship with Jesus, not things.

To me spending lots of money on kids even into their teens is stupid economically. Who gives a c**p about keeping up with the kardashians. They aint all that and they are not as pretty as people think they are. Ive seen much prettier woman in walmart. Kids out grow stuff fast. Spending 50 to 100 bucks on shoes for a toddler is ignorant. Spending money for fashion on a child is dumb. Less than six months later they have outgrown it. Most people especially the more well to do types wont even consider giving expensive clothing to goodwill or the salvation army. Anyone that arent that well off and buy pricey c**p for kids wont give it up either. They will keep it until they lose it by a catastrophy or eviction. I never spent much on clothing for my kids even when they became teens and had to have it. Now they understand the value of a dollar and how to spend it properly. Spoiling kids make them bad kids and adults. They think they are entitled. Bad idea.

You should go ahead, take the $9000 and put a down payment on the baby's house. This way, you can ensure your niece will be well set up by her 18th birthday with her own place to live. Her mother will likely be living inside a ridiculously tiny luxury vehicle by then (if my math of stupid decisions+no job+ kardashian complex = 10,000 × 18. Seriously. Someone needs to step in. Put the money in a trust fund for the child before she has to work 2 full time jobs from age 13 on to "pay her mother back what she owes."I waa raised by a narcissist, believe me- THIS IS THE WAY THE WIND IS BLOWING Your sister needs to GROW UP NOW and ypur parents need to realize they are helping NO ONE and helping to kick their grand babys legs out as she takes her first steps into adulthood if THIS is what they are investing in right now instead of her college fund...and cribs decrease in value by like 85% after a kid cycles through there with all the p**s, s**t and barf that accompanies.

My kids have almost everything from second hands or our relatives bought it for them. I bought formula (for two kids at the same time, fu.king expensive), diapers and other necessities. My daughter was wearing "boyish" clothes most of the time, since they were hand downs and I didn't wanted to buy them just so she can wear it for a few weeks at most. Babies grow so fast, it doesn't make sense to spend that ridiculous amount of money for unnecessary items.

Applying malicious compliance to family scenarios can be interesting. If you are, let's say... "financially stable" (which author does NOT imply - yes I know). Plz consider paying $3,500 to both your parents and sisters rent (HA!!?!), Or mortgage. And tell them to buy fridge themselves! Like clothes with holes in them that had been passed down thru 4 of m-i-l'a kids already...over 20 years! I, on the other hand, being the only local family who has contact with her and had backpay I could spare, dropped about 3.5k on a bunch of stuff she ACTUALLY needed! Crib, stroller, diapers, kitchen supplies, pacifiers, bottles, pack and play, etc. ESENTIALS! And her m-i-l looks at me like I'M the a-holes. They make some damn good money... Normally I have 300 to work with after bills... They go on vacation almost 2x a month! Couldn't be bothered...

I'm pretty sure my mom used the same crib for all three of us kids and I guarantee you none of us give a sh1t. We had a bed to sleep in and I remember no longer being in the crib when I was MAYBE 4? Basically as soon as my mom started to notice me escaping it. FWIW, my sister first used it when she was born in 1972, then I was the last to use it in, like, 1990/1. I have no idea how much it cost, but I guarantee it was in the low triple digits at the very MOST. Probably not even that much. NTA all the way. Get her a sh!t ton of diapers (pun intended) since she's going to need them anyway and call it a day.

I bought a 2nd hand crib($50), all 4 children used it. Had my parents buy a new dresser for me, that was 37 years ago, and still in use. You can always use a dresser, a crib is done after 2-3 years. I gave my 37y.o. $400 to purchase the matching dresser for the crib they got for their son. But I would never spend more than $50 on a sibling's gift, I had my own family to buy for. Now grandchildren is another story, hee hee. Go crazy, more disposable income now.

When I was prego with my 1st daughter, one of my sisters came up to see me and she went and bought a new crib at Walmart for right at $100 that converts into a toddler bed into a full size bed(this was in 2003). Well when my oldest was 4 I was pregnant with her little sister and guess who used the SAME crib as she did.... Her little sister! When her little sister was a yr and a half I converted the crib into a toddler bed but my daughter would NOT sleep in it for nothing, she actually dragged her mattress into our room and then would go to sleep(with big sisters help lol). Well when we moved to a different state my kids father's cousin needed a crib for his 1st child so we gave it to him.(the crib was right at 8yrs old by then but still in great shape). Why spend 8k for a crib unless you're mega rich? The child will NOT remember it unless it gets used by younger siblings or other family members.More than likely 10yrs down the road the expensive crib will no longer be in safety standards

Girlfriend is a poser! Better to give the kid an investment in gold, for that price, than to buy an item that just has gold on it.😄 I used the same crib for all 4 of my kids; 1st one got new, the ones that followed had a place to lay their heads- the youngest was climbing out of it @ 9 months old. I mean, really- googled celebrity crib trends, and even Blue Ivy' s crib didn't cost that much! A couple of years ago, I saw an article about a crib celebs were gushing about, to the tune of around $2500, and I thought that was ridiculous.

That is nuts! But regarding the 7 year old crib, I would advise looking into crib requirements as they change quite often and the crib may be out of specs for what is currently required. No, do not spend that kind of money on a crib for a kid that will outgrow it. But look into whether the crib you have is still considered legal.

"she deserves it!" Um no she doesn't. She's not entitled to her sister's money. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Also she's not the parent either so she's not financially responsible for her period. 🙅🏻‍♀️ She can help her sister out, but she's not obligated to do so. Girl's almost 30, she should know how to manage money by now. Can't keep running to mother to take care of things either. Her mother will eventually reach the age were she can't both physically and possibly mentally take care of things run in her family like dementia. This is my suggestion, your parents are the ones who spoiled your sister , it is not yours or your siblings responsibility to pay for what she wants being spoiled. Your mom and sister need to realize you all have your own family. They are responsible for her greedy selfish attitude, she and your mother needs to get over it. Your all being reasonable enough to help out , if she really wants it her in-laws and her husband should pay for the other half of that is the case and see how they feel about it.

There's no factual evidence that something is good, just because it's expensive. The baby won't even have the capacity to appreciate such "fine craftsmanship" until well after they've outgrown it.

I had a second hand cot for my daughter, all I had to get was a new mattress for it. The baby won't sleep any better in a $7k cot than they would in any other much cheaper one.

They slept with us (breastfeeding is sooo much easier if you co-sleep or bedshare) until at least 18 months and then they can have a kids bed. Total waste of money.

The reason the parents are on a limited budget now is because they blew every penny paying for everything for the younger sister- including her house (!?!?) So now that the gravy train is out of fuel, she just needs to get used to not getting everything she wants. This is just the beginning I promise. Children are starving all over the world and these b*tch wants to put her baby to sleep in a gold crib just for 10 months. Just appreciate life and be simple as possible. This is not for the baby. This is for her selfish a*s.

In India, we get a decent new car in that amount. Instead that amount can be deposited as a baby welfare fund that can be of some use to the baby in her future endeavours

Dear God!!! My lil sis had her first kid a little over 2 years ago... Her fiance's family gave her all hand-me-downs....and not even nice ones.
