“Am I A Jerk For Telling My Wife That Leaving Her Used Pad In My Brother’s Place Was Inappropriate?”

“Am I A Jerk For Telling My Wife That Leaving Her Used Pad In My Brother’s Place Was Inappropriate?”

By now, you’d think that pads, tampons, and periods should be normal things to talk about in today’s society. But it’s 2022 and, sadly, menstruation stigma is still a thing.

Most often, the menstrual taboo manifests in sophisticated and subtle ways that look seemingly innocent and are quite difficult to pick up on. But sometimes, there is genuine disgust, shame, and fear attached to it, where women and girls feel embarrassed for having periods in the first place. Speaking of the latter, one story on the AITA subreddit is a perfect example of that.

A man is facing backlash after he accused his wife of being “highly inappropriate” for leaving a used pad in his brother’s bathroom. In the trash. Where it’s supposed to be.

It all started when the Redditor shared a post on the AITA subreddit and detailed how his 31-year-old single brother felt disrespected after he explained what the woman did. “I was shocked and didn’t know what to say,” the user recounted. But the internet had plenty. Read on to find out how the situation evolved, the verdict readers were quick to deem, and be sure to weigh in on the discussion in the comments.

It comes as no surprise that the vast majority of Redditors have deemed both the husband and his brother extremely in the wrong in this situation. Looking at the comments, many people believed the story reeks of misogyny and female bodily shame, and immediately called out the grossed-out men for their behavior.

But unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. There’s a long history of menstrual taboos across many cultures, and education about periods is still woefully lacking worldwide. Given the common misconception that menstruation should be secret women’s business, women are taught from a young age they must manage it discreetly.

Of course, there has been a positive shift in attitudes toward menstruation, but many women still feel ashamed. Because through harmful messages about women’s cycles and appalled responses to any mention of it, it’s what society tells us to feel. But it’s time we destigmatize it.

According to Jane Ussher, a professor of Women’s Health Psychology at Western Sydney University, periods have long been associated with “dirt, and disgust, and shame, and some might say fear.” However, she argues that menstruation stigma is in fact a form of misogyny: “it’s a sign of positioning something that is essentially feminine as other, dirty and disgusting.”

“If you talk to young women across a whole range of different cultural groups about their major concern about menstruation, it’s concealment. It’s about not knowing you’re menstruating — the worst idea being blood been seen, which leads to menstrual shame,” Professor Ussher added.

If left unaddressed, this shame can affect how women feel about this completely normal bodily function. And, alarmingly, it can also damage their well-being and how they perceive their bodies. So better understanding of menstruation is key to improving health outcomes for women.

But when these situations occur in real life, it may be difficult to know how to react in a way that wouldn’t spark tension between you and your loved ones. So to gain more insight from an expert, Bored Panda reached out to Eileen Head, a transformational coach who aims to help people to shift their mindset and release old beliefs, blocks, and patterns to create the love they desire.

“The first question is if this woman had known this was going to be an issue, would she have handled this differently?” Head asked.

The coach mentioned that it appears there already has been friction between the wife and brother-in-law, which is likely to trigger any issue that comes up. “As always, what we are fighting about is not what we are fighting about!”

“These situations always morph into other things,” Head added. “The wife is thinking her husband ‘should’ agree with her and now is upset with him. Her husband has his own opinion and feels wronged.”

Unfortunately, the woman is likely to be feeling embarrassed. Head argues that when that happens, many of us tend to go into justification “which is one of the biggest causes of disconnection in relationships. Then everyone gets entrenched with right/wrong leaving each person stuck with bad feelings.”

However, the key element in this dispute is disrespect. “The brother-in-law feels disrespected in his own house, the wife feels disrespected because her husband is not siding with her, and her husband feels disrespected that she won’t acknowledge others’ feelings,” Head noted. “It may make no sense to us so we might not have the awareness that others feel differently.”

Relationship coach Head noted that to get out of this situation in a way that would make the wife feel good about it, she should consider taking the high road. “Even if you still believe that you did nothing wrong, by taking responsibility in any situation with others, this will earn you respect…and if not from others, you will feel better as being the more evolved person. Being able to do this and using this as a skill will benefit you in all your relationships,” Head concluded.

If anyone is having a disagreement, Head offers a variety of coaching programs, as well as a free call on her website, for people who’d like to create the meaningful relationships they desire.

We’d love to hear your thoughts about the incident. What do you think about the husband’s and his brother’s actions? How would you have handled the situation? Feel free to share your opinions, as well as personal experiences, with us in the comments down below.

Readers were appalled by the whole situation and unanimously said the man and his brother need to seriously rethink their reaction

If she is at all like most women, she didn't just toss it in the bin, she wrapped it first either in toilet paper or in th wrapper of the new pad to ensure it doesn't stick to anything or otherwise isn't a problem when emptying the trash. If so, the brother didn't just look in the trash. He had to unwrap it. Just eww and creepy that the brother did that.

Good point! Even without a wrapper from the next one a woman will fold the pad and wrap loo paper around it. The brothers are idiots.

When I was in college, there was a dorm hall meeting about new rules for the women's bathroom. We were told that we were not allowed to throw feminine products in the trash can and we were to carry them back to our rooms to dispose of them there. I don't think any of us did that.

Next time she should throw it away in the kitchen, since she’s not allowed to put it in the bathroom trash. Hey BIL, where did you want me to put this menstrual pad again? The bin in your room? The kitchen bin? You want it in my purse? Here, hold it while I get a baggie out of my purse for it, thanks!

I have to say, no matter how uncomfortable the brother is about periods, the wife is probrably *more* uncomfortable having him complain about her menstruation. 'Disrespectful' would have been leaving her used pad anywhere other than the waste bin. She was totally normal, your brother is a weird little creep who goes through the bathroom trash to find out what women are doing in the loo. He's an a*****e. You're an a*****e. Apologise and do better, before she tosses you out with the trash as well.

I think the brother was just looking to pick a fight with her. He surely has had menstruating women over before. But the husband mentioned that they don't get along well, anyway. So I doubt this is really about feminine hygiene products at all. Either way, the brother needs to grow up and the husband needs to figure out who he is actually married to. Is is married to his brother or his wife?

Yes, YTA. It’s the blunt truth. But you can either learn from this experience and become a better man, or you can stay the same until she outgrows you, and lose your marriage eventually. The awful way it’s going, you might prefer the first option.

Oh is "incel" something to do with race or something? I legit never heard of that word till like last year and I'm an avid researcher, writer and reader of all kinds of publications and view points as well as being almost 40 yrs old. I'm gonna go look it up now since this is the 2nd time I've seen this word since the 1st time I saw it a yr ago. But yea if what you said is racist or prejudicial, then knock it off please. I'm still in utter shock that adult men could POSSIBLY even THINK what this woman did was anything other than normal and appropriate. If I was that woman id have smeared my used pad all over the brothers face all up in his mouth and said "ok NOW my pad is in the proper trash!" Implying that his face is trash and whatever words live in his mouth are also trash. Not a perfect come back but one I'd HIGHLY enjoy. She married a cave man from a cave man family.

Please tell me this is a fake story for clicks. If not, the brothers are absolutely the A's. Another take on this. 1. She doesn't like your brother. 2. She is on her period so likely not feeling her best. 3. Because she cares about you she goes to the brother's BD get together with you even though 1 and 2. 4. Boyfriend and bother act immature and pretty much guarantee she won't go the next time.

"Relationship coach Head noted that to get out of this situation in a way that would make the wife feel good about it, she should consider taking the high road." Yeah - the high road out of that relationship as soon as possible. Is that so-called relationship coach serious? If, like me, you normally just read the original story and comments, and not the editorial commentary, I suggest you go back and read the editorial content. Personally, I think the "relationship coach" comments on the situation were just as bad as the two brothers' behaviour. Why does the woman need to apologize and ask what she should have done differntly?

I like the comment about bleeding on furniture. Next time the wife should go there without pad even if she's menstruating, bleeding all around, even on his white expensive new couch (has he a white couch? I don't know, i hope so so she can bleed on it) and when she's called out about it, she has to state that she did it so her pad doesn't make anyone uncomfortable (EDIT: I'm sarcastic of course)

What does his brother do if or when he ever has a woman over, or a girlfriend...expect them to use the menstrual hut?!?!!! This is the first AITA to make me consider reading every single Redditor response to see how well and truly OP was trounced. It was in the bin, exactly where disposable sanitary products are supposed to go once used. If the pad had been flushed down the toilet and created a blockage which led to a plumbing bill, then OP's brother would have had a right to be pissed at whoever was responsible. And it wasn't deliberately left stuck to the wall or on the side of the sink or anything like that, it was in the sodding bin. I can just imagine OP having to explain to a lawyer or judge the irreconcilable differences leading to his divorce.

I agree with the brother that the wife is an AH. If she's menstruating, then in his family it soulnds like the preferred thing to do would to be what they did in the 1700s in these cases: Lock her in the shed outside so she doesn't infect anyone, until she's done with her period and is allowed back in Polite Society again ---- put her on an ice floe and send her out to get her witchcraft away from the Menfolk ---- throw her in a pond with a rock tied to her and if she sinks and drown, then she is clean and can go back over for dinner (I get ideas from Monty Python...) That all aside. WHAT is the brother doing digging around in the trash after she used the bathroom?

Just, wow... Next time ask the brother what he does with whatever he uses for his own gender bodily fluids (whether it be from individual or shared sexual activity). Doubtful he carries out to the neighborhood trash collection. The idea that a normal bodily function should be kept secret and hidden like they don't exist is dated and flawed (this includes breastfeeding, but also doesn't mean certain other activities shouldn't still be behind closed doors). There's oh so much more I could say on the subject, but will save it for another day.

I grew up in a house that was all female except for my dad. He at one time or another had a woman menstruating around him. He never made a big deal about it or got mad at us about it. If my sister and I had an accident at school, he had no problem bringing us a change of clothes and pads. He had no problem going in the store to buy us pads. Any man that behaves this way about menstruation is an incel and will probably be alone for the rest of their life.

"I can't give info or expand on what was seen" - The word is "expound" not "expand". I feel so bad for OP's wife. I hope she can find a grown man instead. And unless she left the pad blood-side up in the trash, then yeah OP's bro is an incel who gets angry at women for menstruating. I wouldn't go anywhere near someone like that.

Oh boy. My ex-boyfriend refused to put a trash-can in his bathroom and even forbade me to buy one myself... This went on for about two months, after that I was so p*ssed off that I had to walk around the flat with my used products to dispose of them in the kitchen trash (as if this was more hygienic) that this, amongst many others, was one of the main reasons why I broke off with him. It's basic decency to accomodate to menstruating guests by putting a bin (preferably with a lid) in your bathroom, let alone do it for your gf if she asks you repeatedly.

How dare she not time her period perfectly so that it did not interfere with brother's dinner. At the very least she should have held it in until she got back to her own bathroom when she could have let it rip. How insensitive to remind someone of her natural body! Seriously people, if being a woman is so offensive, you need to speak to a professional.

This reminds me of the German version of "Lion's Den" ("Höhle der Löwen"): two men invented something called "Pinky Gloves", which was a pink rubber glove packed in a little fancy box that would allow women to discreetly & "hygienically" change and dispose their tampons. They got the idea when living with women! during their university years and noticed that women discarded their hygiene products in the bathroom bin and how sometimes the blood soaked through the toilet paper wrapping. Not to mention the smell (probably more related to the fact how often the trash was carried out 🙄). Long story short: one of the investors, a male, gave these founders a great deal, which they accepted. However, none of this borderline misogynistic males had counted on the wrath of angry women. Women called out the product to be (rightfully) period shaming, pink tax and the utter useless of such a product. Forcing the founders/investor to apologise for not understanding and eventually withdraw it fully.

Adding to this: two female founders, who pitched high-quality period panties some years ago got no deal at all. But as far as I'm aware their business prospered due to that major fail. A fail which became an example of not how to do business 😜

Sadly even some women don't want used period products in their bathroom trash. My aunt makes her granddaughters take their garbage all the way to the outside trash can instead of chucking them in the bathroom bin. I had to stay with her a night once and I was in my twenties at this point, I wrapped up the used pad, buried in the trash can under Kleenex and she still talked to my mom about it. There was a note on the bathroom door later telling everyone to take their hygiene products outside. My aunt has issues.

Clearly, OP's wife should respect OP's brother's wishes to never see a used pad in his bathroom, by sticking it to the wall behind the U-bend or at the back of the cupboard under the sink. He's not gonna see it there. Not until it starts smelling really weird, anyway.

I have no words. Being a woman, and just a human I can bet my last doller she wrapped that pad in the new pads wrapper or some toilet tissue. Or something. As a rule normal people don't really want others to see their used pads any way. What you and your brother did is childish and you clearly had a sheltered youth. If my teen boys saw a girl in need of lady products they would know how to handle it and help provide. If the saw a used one in a trash can they would empty it or cover it up if needed. Do you know why, because I brought them up with respect and understanding and they have a sister and a mom. Seriously dude I'm surprised you still have a wife

You're far worse than an AH. Grow tf up. And, your apparently twelve year-old brother... wow. Dude, it was not about the pad! Or, does he tell every female friend not to visit if she in on her period!? Your baby brother is a whopping AH. He does not like your wife. He chose a poor subject to use to berate her. "Poor" because he is not only an AH, he is an immature(!) moron and, it seems, he was determined to prove it. Yeah. He has. [An aside to your wife: Your husband's family seems terribly awkward in and sadly unprepared for the real world. Ditch your husband... unless he agrees to mature to a reasonable age. Stay away from his brother. The (very) little boy is too odd. He doesn't like you. Jealous? Probably.... and, he has no shame about his inappropriate behavior. Danger, Sweetie!!!!]

So he wanted her to put it in the outside bin? You can guarantee that if she did that he would be complaining the next time he went outside, lifted the lid and saw the pad there. He'd probably also complain that the neighbours or refuse workers would see it too and it would embarrass him. This was also more discreet (if he wasn't a weirdo who went rummaging through bins) as he'd have definitely wondered why she went outside without saying anything and she'd have had to explain in front of people what she had disposed of.

Woman here and I wrap soaked pads in toiletpaper before I discard them. Especially when there is no bag in the bin. I had to peel my sister in laws panty shield from the edge of a bin once and I am really not that keen on having to touch vagina juice. So IF the woman threw an unwrapped pad in a bin without bag or lid that is pretty gross, imo. But even had she stuck the thing to the bathroom wall: why on earth does the brother don't go to her but to her husband?? What is wrong with that family? Now myself I would have carried it and thrown it away in the main trash can wherever it is in the house. I do this at home because of my dogs they like to shred paper and plastic things so I tend to do this everywhere I go (except my work because I know there's no dogs there). Even at my moms house she always giggles when she sees me do it says I can leave it in the bathroom trash but she has two dogs so nope it goes in the big bin. OP didn't say anything about his brother having a dog so he's just an a*****e who probably never has women at his place. Now we know why.....they're both assholes. She should have wrapped it in toilet paper before throwing it away. Throwing a bloody pad on top of a trashcan is like pooping in a toilet and not flushing. People on here want to make it a gender issue, but I can't imagine that very many women want to look at the bloody pads of their female roommates either. Just use toilet paper to wrap it up.

I think it all depends on whether it was wrapped in toilet paper. If she left it exposed on top of the garbage—gross. If he dug through the trash, unwrapped it and then complained—gross. Spoken as someone who would always wrap them up. I lived a woman who did not. And lived with two boys who would unwrap mine. And then somehow everyone would snidely call me disgusting and I was too embarrassed to discuss it and defend myself. God, I hate my family. (Not just because of this.)

Here is the thing a used pad left in a trashcan for days can caused the bathroom to smell. When I am on my period I put out the bathroom trash daily. When there is no period my bathroom trash sometimes don't go out for a week or longer because nothing goes in there but tissue or makeup stuff. I guess I can be judged here as being lazy, but yes that is how I do it. Food is not allowed in the bathroom trashcan. With that said, I can understand a single male not emptying the trashcan daily and not wanting certain types of items in the bin. There is also the fact that from the pad could be seen in the trash it must not have been disposed of discretely. That is wrapped in tissue or a bag. That to me says your wife may have been deliberate in her actions. The bottom line too is that people have a tight to set rules in their own home and if someone does not like it then they also have the right to not visit that home.

There isn't any information in OP's story that indicates she left it in full view. Presumably a man can tell it's a feminine hygiene product even while wrapped up discretely. Since the husband did not say anything about the product being left in full view, I don't agree with your assessment of the situation. He indicated that the problem was that she left it in the trash, NOT that she didn't wrap it up properly.

The OP failed to mention if his wife wrapped the used pad or not. If she did, then he's TA. But if she didn't wrap it in anything before tossing it in the trash, I think he's NTA. I'm a woman, and I think used pads are gross, and if left unwrapped then the home owner will have to maybe touch it in ordr to take it to a larger trashcan or dumpster.

My last job i used to have to empty the ladies room trash at work and was astounded at how many of my fellow women don't know how to dispose of items, they would just throw an unwrapped used pad in the trash where i would have to get a glove and paper towel to unstick it from the garbage can. Disgusting. Noone wants to see your blood when opening a garbage can. Please please please wrap it in a little toilet paper or at least the new pads wrapper!

Everyone is jumping on these men like they're so unreasonable. My question is, did she take care in throwing it away? The reason I ask is because the husband mentions that there has been bad blood (excuse the pun) between them for some time. I could see a woman with a bad attitude not throwing such a personal item away properly. When I have been at others' homes I have gone so far as to wrap it and push it far enough down in the trash can so that other trash is covering it. I'm wondering how she did it. Think about it, how did the BIL know no it was in the can? That's suspicious to me!

Next time the wife should go there without pad even if she's menstruating, bleeding all around, even on his white expensive new couch (has he a white couch? I don't know, i hope so so she can bleed on it) and when she's called out about it, she has to state that she did it so her pad doesn't make anyone uncomfortable (EDIT: I'm sarcastic of course)

I've known some guys over the years that are grossed out by menstruation (let's be real, it is kind of gross, it's not like we're sprouting flowers down there), however, they at least understand that it's a natural thing that every woman goes through and won't make a big deal about it. Even my dad, who lives in the 50's mentally, accepts it for what it is: normal. WTF was this poor woman supposed to do? Dig a hole and squat in the yard? God, these guys need to grow tf up.

If my sister and I had an accident at school, he had no problem bringing us a change of clothes and pads. He had no problem going in the store to buy us pads. Any man that behaves this way about menstruation is an incel and will probably be alone for the rest of their life.

Well he said she should toss it outside, so next time I hope she carries it dripping into the livingroom, opens a window and tosses it outside onto the brother’s doorstep or car. Like a proper lady.

Those men are stupid idiots, misogynists for sure. It is why I have been so shy for years about people knowing when I menstruated. This sort of stigma sh*ts me. Yes me too, I fold and then wrap in loo paper. I really hope she walks away from him, she deserves much better. I really feel for her right now, the pain of being shamed by her husband and his brother.

I had an aunt get mad at me for that while staying at her house for a few days. I had even wrapped it and shoved it in the bottom of the trash because I was embarrassed to be on my period. Apparently I was supposed to trash it in the kitchen. If 14y/o me could go back in time, I'd tell her off instead of being ashamed of nature.

(God forbid she wrapped the thing and her brother unwrapped it. That woudl be truly gross)

"Tell you have never been intimate with a woman without saying you have never been intimate with a woman". Because women fart unicorn powder and only menstruates of pure spite just so a poor single man's bathroom BIN will be soiled with a wrapped sanitary pad.

Them for it. Family should be supportive. OP will be lucky if she wants to stay married to a man who would side with his brother over his wife especially regarding a period issue. I know for a fact not all men are like that because my father was always supportive with me and my mother and my husband has always been supportive during our 20+ years together,

Menstruation is natural and nothing women can control and women do not need the men in their lives to shame

who raised these guys? we know that they had a mother so they had at least one close female contact. did they fail biology? they sound as if they think women shouldn't have any bodily functions with the exception of those that they benefit from. if these two ever are fortunate enough to have a woman to have children with and they attend the birth they may end up as one of those men who find that their previous "lover" is no longer attractive due to the process of motherhood. after reading this it makes me think that the things i have read about the involuntary celibate men are their own worst enemy.

I would need to know if she wrapped the pad before passing judgement. I'm a woman, my boys have to deal with the bathroom trash can being full of these things once a month....but I wrap them up. I wouldn't want to look at someone else's poo on a toilet tissue so I assume they wouldn't want to look at my blood on a pad.

If I was the wife, I´d just decide I am not comfortable with the brother to use their toilets when at visits - how about he keeps it in or just goes to a nearby park for release? It´s her home, her decision what makes her uncomfortable!

If she rolled the pad up and covered it with toilet paper, the guys' bad. If she just threw it on top of the uncovered trash can, shame on her. I have been in homes where women did not coverup used pads and it's disgusting.

Even if she didn't wrap it up, who cares? It's a trash can. We all know that they sometimes unroll anyway. Open or not, just empty the damn trash. I can't believe some women are saying this.

Did she not wrap it? If he was able to see it it sounds like she didn't and i don't blame him for being grossed out.

Missing info... was the pad just thrown in the unlidded and in the open bathroom waste basket: A) Open and very bloody or B) rolled up and wrapped in toilet paper so it looks like a small ball of white paper (like all responsible, respectful and mature women do)??? BUUUT... if she left it in the A position, then she is not only gross, disgusting, and very disrespectful to EVERYONE at the dinner party but a also a complete beyotch; she knew exactly what she was doing.
