Tumblr User Explain Why Cats Are Obsessed With Eating Bread

Nothing can tease your appetite better than the smell of freshly baked sourdough bread. But did you know that craving bread is not exclusive to humans? As it turns out, cats love sourdough too! We all know that cats are highly skilled nocturnal animals. Even the well-fed domestic cats prey on birds, reptiles and small mammals. Scientists estimate that with more than 70 million pet cats and over 60millions strays, they account for the killing of billions of wild animals each year.

Furthermore, house cats do not kill for food only; the carnivorous animals’ instincts dictate them to put their skills into use given the opportunity.

Some people noticed that these funny cats often react quite erratic at sight of delicious bread. Take, for instance, this cat from Russia, who aggressively fought his owner over a loaf of bread, as she struggled to take it away from him.

However, Boris is not just a quirky, unique cat with a strong craving for sourdough. In fact, many cats have a thing for bread.

Tumblr users gathered some more evidence highlighting this strange cat behavior.

As it turns out, cats are obsessed with the taste of yeast. Nothing improves their appetites better, so it’s no surprise that your silly cat steals bread from a cupboard or sneaks in to steal your bagel. Try sharing next time!

Yeast is used heavily as a flavoring agent in many cat foods and treats. It is even used in some medication made for cats.

In moderation, it is completely healthy for cats to eat bread. Since cats are carnivores, they are nor required to eat carbohydrates to survive. So the consumption of big amounts of carbohydrates can lead to obesity in cats.

That’s why it is recommended only to offer your cat bread as a treat. It is also advised that no more than 10-15% of the cat’s daily intake should be made of human food. While baked bread is fine for your feline friend, giving them bread dough is may lead to bloating and other health issues.

My sister's cat is obsessed with any kind of bread. He's very people food motivated in general, but particularly obsessed with bread. I've lost many a bagel due to his chewing through the bag. They can't leave ANY food on the counter tops. None. It has to go in the fridge, pantry or microwave. When I'm at their house for the holidays I spend half of my time on cat-duty, which is just watching the cat and making sure he doesn't get into the food. Unfortunately due to his theiving ways the cat has had two full urinary tract blockages and now has to be on special food and can't have people food at all. So it's not just a matter of guarding the food from the cat, it's also guarding the cat's health. I am VERY gateful that my cat doesn't care about people food.

No. I think it's somekind of a neurosis some cats have, like my cat did. It may be a sign that your cat needs more attention like play time, or the cat has a lot of stress about something. Sometimes it might be due too early weaning as a kitten (a cat should be at least 12 weeks old before weaning) and it will never go fully away.

Who ever had our cat before the poor tiny little guy ended up in traffic. ( thank God Hubby was able to rescue him) must have been feeding him nothing but junk food. Our daughter was home on holiday break from college so there was lots of junk in the house and the kitten wanted it all but really went nuts when she opened a box of powdered donuts. We got his diet habits under control but if those donuts make it into the house he knows right away and has to get them.

One of my cats will eat literally anything. Bread, lettuce, cheese, steak, mashed potatos, mac n cheese, spicy cheeze its, spinch dip, twizzlers, etc. If you are eating something she wants a bite and will gently and slowly place a paw on the hand that has the food and slowly bring it towards her. PLEASE be careful if you make your own bread: The raw dough or yeast can swell up inside the cat and give immense pain, possibly death. ( raising bread ? do you mean raisin? or bread that is raising before cooking? BOTH are dangerous )

My cats have zero interest in any human food except for tuna on occasion. And if it's offered to them two days in a row, they don't want it. It's very strange. But if your cat does like people food, make sure you stay away from grapes, raisins (obviously), onions, garlic, chives and leeks. These are all very toxic for them.

With grapes it's the skin and seeds that will get them sick. My cat loved grapes. I'd peel and seed them, the vet said that was fine. Yes... I would peel the grapes.. it took time, but it was a special treat he loved.

Cats like tomatoes. You're supposed to store tomatoes on the counter, but Louis became a tomato vampire. He was really big, so he would bite into a tomato, then stand on it with his front paws and lick up the juice. I would come home to tomatoes with fang marks on them.

It's not a 'silly trend', simply that cats are just plain weird. I've had many cats over the last 45 years. One got into the groceries as I was bringing them in, ripped the bag open and ate only the (whole!) top crust--I ended up bringing the bread in last after that, and hiding it in the fridge. So he took to opening potato chips from the middle (only new bags, though...) He loved tortilla chips, too. Right now I have one that has to check the taste of any bread--but only comes back for seconds on the expensive stuff. They're weird.

I thought my cat was the only one who would nibble into a loaf of bread when I wasn't paying attention.

When my cat gives me "the look" when I'm eating something, I let her smell it. She usually declines. Not with bread. Thought maybe she wanted to make a sandwich.

Never had a cat beg for food before....

Cats love eating brewer's yeast and it makes a good treat for them.

PLEASE be careful if you make your own bread: The raw dough or yeast can swell up inside the cat and give immense pain, possibly death. ( raising bread ? do you mean raisin? or bread that is raising before cooking? BOTH are dangerous )

The second night we had Taliesin, I wasn't feeling well, so I was eating depression toast. Taliesin hopped up on my lap, sniffed my half eaten piece of toast, and then grabbed it and ran away. It was bigger than she was!

I made some eggless cookie dough fairly recently, and my cat was begging me for some. She didn't get any, of course.. then again, she begs for everything.

I've only seen pictures of cats stealing bread. Our cats liked cheese better. We would give them some cheese shreds when they begged.

I wonder if anyone has tested the theory about the yeast by seeing if the cats react to unleavened bread?

I've never had a cat and it constantly amazes me that they steal food just like dogs do. Actually, my guinea pigs will steal food, too! Maybe all animals steal food.

Our cats don't ravage the bread, but we do have a cat that has like a corner fetish! Any corner, be it books or walls, she will naw them down. She also has a thing for tomatoes :P.
