Mohamed Bzeek is a devout Libyan-born Muslim who has spent the last 20 years giving hope and comfort to children no other person would care for ten of whom have died. ‘The key is, you have to love them like your own,’ Bzeek said. ‘I know they are sick. I know they are going to die. I do my best as a human being and leave the rest to God.’ But Bzeek might not have found this calling had it not been for his former wife, Dawn who started care for sick children. They kept the work up even when their son, Adam, was born in 1997 with brittle bone disease and dwarfism. Now, Bzeek is caring for a girl who was born with encephalocele, which left her mentally and physically underdeveloped with parts of her brain protruding from a hole in her skull that had to be surgically removed. ‘I know she can’t hear, can’t see, but I always talk to her,’ he said. I’m always holding her, playing with her, touching her. ... She has feelings. She has a soul. She’s a human being.’
And I hope that it shows Americans that Muslims are people, just like us.

I was just reading more about this amazing man and it made me think of this...my daughter was in the nicu for the first 4months of her life. I cant say that i know what goes on at home after a stranger gives birth but during our time there im surprised how many nicu babies were just....left. The parents just didnt come back one day. I wonder if thats more frequent than with healthy babies? Id say 4 of the 40 babies that were there the same time. Luckily though...we got to see every one leave with new adoptive parents. We got to witness some see their baby for the first time or hug them when they got to take them home but ours wasn't ready. Every one of those babies also left totally 'normal' like no constant/life long care, no physical or mental challenges. How fast their little lives changed
We're in the same boat; I had tears running down my cheeks before I could finish the article. I love him for his compassion, strength, and love for others. He's proven he's a better human than 95% of humanity

Apparently there are other companies that followed suit and it seems that giving all your staff a decent wage does wonders for morale and the local economy.

There's something darkly comedic about lying in bed at 2 AM, thumb cramping from the repetitive, downward swipe, watching humanity's greatest hits of catastrophe scroll past like the world's worst slot machine, itself a pretty low bar. The term was invented by Ashik Siddique, a co-chair of Democratic Socialists of America, and it sounds like a heavy metal band, but feels more like a curse.
That’s not some twist of phrasing, research done by the Harvard Medical school has shown this behavior is linked to worse mental well-being and life satisfaction, with the study finding it evokes greater levels of existential anxiety. Essentially, we're voluntarily marinating our brains in a soup of disasters, then wondering why we feel terrible.

At Humanitas in Deventer, students live rent-free-with one condition: spend at least 30 hours a month connecting with residents through conversation, shared meals, and simply showing up. This intergenerational living setup doesn’t just tackle loneliness-it boosts mental well-being, breaks down age-related stereotypes, and gives everyone involved a greater sense of purpose. I will always promote the importance of having a life full of loving relationships of all kinds; platonic relationships feed our souls too.
This presents a hidden opportunity, the students might pick up a few useful life lessons from the elders.
It won't be just the elderly that benefit-----these kids will gain so much!!!!
The Dutch have many social services for the elderly, dementia patients, and the infirm. Theirs is a small country, but they value their citizens, and the government takes care of them. They also take care of their young and encourage them to give to society through organizations like this. This is what happens when government values its citizens more than just valuing businesses and people who acquire wealth.
The mechanism is insidiously simple. After several minutes of scrolling through negative content, you feel more anxious, angry, or helpless, and this negativity functions like a lens, causing you to pay more attention to stories that justify and accentuate these feelings. It's a feedback loop worthy of Sisyphus, except he at least got some exercise pushing that boulder.

A 79-year-old man from Alberta, Canada, went to beauty school last week for a lesson on how to do his wife’s hair and makeup. His wife of 50 years has always “taken pride in” her appearance and “it’s important to her,” but due to failing eyesight it became increasingly difficult. The husband wanted to first learn how to do his wife’s hair as she kept burning herself with a curling wand because of her vision impairment. “He lovingly pulled pictures from his wallet, showing everyone his wife, and boasting about how beautiful she has always been and how talented she was with skill set of typing over 100 words a minute when she was working,” a teacher said. He said, “Her appearance has always been something she has taken pride in and it’s important to her so therefore important to me.”
"it's important to her so therefore important to me." - ah that bit really turned on the water works for me. Everyone should be loved like this.

I made a wee chair for my daughter's 2nd birthday and painted it with characters from her favourite Sandra Boynton books. She loved that chair!
Wonderful! What a coincidence, though - my FIL made a chair of the exact same design; different wood, though, much darker. The thing is, he made it in his high school shop class, years before he had children and decades before grandchildren.
Doomscrolling can send your mind racing, lead to burnout, and steal your sleep, appetite, motivation, and desire. It's like voluntarily signing up for all the psychological symptoms of actual danger without any of the benefits of, you know, being able to run away from it. Young adults and young men in particular are more at risk.
The Gary Sinise Foundation is a charity and veterans service organization that offers a variety of programs, services and events for wounded veterans. It’s a nonprofit organization, and one of its programs consist of the construction of specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans that are provided mortgage-free. From 2011 to 2021 the Gary Sinise Foundation has raised over $300 million for wounded veterans, first responders, and their families. To date, the Gary Sinise Foundation has built 81 specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded heroes, served more than 1,000,000 meals to America’s defenders across the country, and about 500 support concerts for our troops, sponsored by the foundation.
With the insane budget given to the US military it's insane to think that they can't take care of their own. This is a national shame.

It’s the same in the UK too. Even when you’re still serving, if you’re in between that period of being sick, being medically discharged, and waiting for your exit date, you’re just treated like you’re worth nothing, and all your years of service counts for naught.

Here's the revolutionary concept, sometimes looking at something positive is actually good for you. Research has found links between an upbeat mental state and improved health, including lower blood pressure, reduced risk for heart disease, healthier weight, better blood sugar levels, and longer life. Looking at this sort of content is linked to our bodies lowering the levels of our stress hormones. Joy is not just a pleasant luxury but an actual health intervention, which makes doomscrolling roughly equivalent to chain-smoking despair cigarettes.

The Gills were supposed to be Andrew’s foster parents until he found the right family for him. With gentle love and persistence, Andrew learned to regulate his emotions and started opening up to his new family. Andrew started coming out of his shell when their son invited him to play video games together. A counselor asked Andrew if he’d like to be adopted by them on a walk and he agreed. He didn’t expect to see balloons and placards and the big smiles of the Gills and family friends, nor did he expect to see their son wearing a shirt that said, “Will you be my brother?”. Overwhelmed, Andrew burst into tears and gratefully accepted his new family’s offer. “Thank you you for not giving up on me,” he said when the Gills asked.

I was in Abu Dhabi during the gulf war, we were told if we had to be evacuated we were to turn our pets loose or find a local person to leave them with. The hell. Our plan was to drive to the east coast, find the Royal Navy ship which was readying to repatriate Brits. If they refused to let me bring the dog, I would have asked them to shoot him in front of me. Luckily it didn't come to that, we brought him back to UK when our contract finished, and he had a long and happy time here.

These incredible canines, often Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers, and Labradors, are not just adorable beach companions. They undergo up to three years of intensive training to master water rescues, learning to recognize distress signals, swim through strong currents, and tow swimmers to safety. Some are even trained to leap from boats or helicopters during emergencies. Originally inspired by Italy’s program, Croatia’s initiative began in the late 1970s and has grown into a respected system that blends tradition and innovation. Working side by side with human lifeguards, these dogs don’t just save lives-they offer emotional comfort in high-stress situations. Their strength, loyalty, and gentle nature make them ideal guardians of the shore, ensuring that beachgoers are safe, supported, and smiling

I think this is a great idea! And for anyone angry they don't understand what this means: "sick" is a term that is closely likened to "cool". It originated in surfer culture in the 1980s, became popularized in 1990s, and has been widely used in this way for over 30 years. I think it's probably time to stop being mad about it. If you want to be mad about something, take it out on "riz".

My parents wouldn't let me have a dog as a kid even though I begged constantly. One of the neighbors let me walk their dog Sunny whenever I wanted to. I'm not convinced this is a good idea. How do they combine this with people with allergies or people who don't feel comfortable around dogs and how do they handle all the hair on the chair? I also don't like dogs (or people) sitting on chairs with their bare behinds. Ideal would be to have a separate area where owners and dogs can sit together.
And trust me, there's no way this ISN'T a good idea. Many dogs are injured or killed in the cargo hold of planes, and sometimes as a pet owner, you don't have a choice. Bailey had no idea this was planned until her 17th birthday, when the first bouquet arrived —a surprise that would become a yearly reminder of her father’s lasting presence. On her 21st birthday, she received the final bouquet and one last letter. In it, her dad wrote, “This is my last love letter to you until we meet again.” The story touched millions around the world, not just for its heartbreak, but for the incredible thoughtfulness behind it. A passerby filmed the encounter, and the video went viral, leading to an outpouring of support for Johnson. Within days, donations of food, money, and clothing poured in from around the world. In response, the Tarrant Police Department delivered two truckloads of groceries to Johnson’s home, significantly improving her family’s situation.
America has no shame that people from around the world were feeding one of their own citizens because the State (as in nation state) wouldn’t do so . . . ?
Of course we do, but nearly all of us can't afford to help. Our country is run by the rich who don't care.
Load More Replies...It’s great that the cop bought her a dozen eggs and that she received two truckloads of groceries but this woman needed long term help, not just a band aid. How about helping her find a job? I know that this story is old but even 11 years later she’s still not too old to work.
When I was a teen, I worked at a Dunkin Donuts in Mesa, AZ. We had to throw everything out after a certain amount of time. One evening I saw an elderly homeless lady going through the trash to get the donuts. After that I didn't throw them out with the trash, we used a sanitized garbage can (store owner was a greedy bustard so we had to be covert) instead. I wish I had done more, but being a teen I didn't know what to do. I tried speaking with her but she acted like I didn't exist because of her mental state. I still think about her and the other homeless that relied on us. Still wish I'd done more.
You did what you could at the time. Good for you! 👍
Load More Replies...When I was 16 I worked in a take out restaurant that served jacked potatoes. One day a homeless man walked up and ordered a jacked potato. He had the money to pay in his hand. The manager told him to scram, because he thought the homeless man would chase away other customers. I was horrified with his outburst and after my manager went inside I told the homeless man to meet me after closing hours. Every day this place would throw out what was left at the end of the day. So I offered to "take out the trash" and did my best to turn them into nice meals without my manager noticing. Then I would meet up with the homeless man around the corner and give him all that was left. He would then share the meal with other homeless people. I only worked there for one summer, hated that manager and never understood why someone could be so heartless...
It's all about profit for them. Emotions don't come into it for them. I am so pleased you were able to feed him while you could.

It could've been a really bad crime. You can't necessarily blame her. Still deserved though.
You don't want to know about the state of affairs in the US when it comes to neglected and a****d children. There is so much cover up of trafficking even after Epstien nobody wants to face the truth.

Boy, my unemployed a*s could use one of those. At least I've got the local food pantry.
Food pantries in the US are overwhelmed because we can't even get any source of fresh produce. F**K TRUMP AND HIS SHORT SIGHTED POLICIES. HE IS SCREWING THE WORLD FOR BILLIONARES. AND HE IS DUMBER THAN A BOX OF ROCKS.

He got caught in a storm and separated from his family. He was taken in and handed over to a wildlife conservation agency.
$711K would be more fitting, and also more beneficial by the time she hits college age.
In 2017, Emma Wren Gibson was born from an embryo that had been frozen for 24 years, since 1992. Her mother, Tina Gibson, was born just a year earlier, in 1991, making the embryo almost as old as Tina herself! Tina and her husband, Benjamin, adopted the embryo through the National Embryo Donation Center (NEDC) in Tennessee, an organization that helps facilitate the donation of unused embryos from in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. Emma’s birth set a record as the longest-known frozen embryo to result in a healthy live birth.
Wow. That's actually a very ingenious idea rather than having to wait at a charging station. I always thought having electric cars is not a great idea. What if you are stuck in traffic. What if you have to travel a really long way. I'm guessing there are ways around this. I'm not in favour of electric cars because of the cost of replacing the batteries. Cost nearly as much as another car I would think.
That's why I drive a hybrid. I love to take long road trips, but the electric part kicks in with local driving.

For the first time in U.S. history, women over 40 are giving birth more frequently than teenagers. Since 1990, teen birth rates have declined by 73%, while births among women aged 40 and older have surged by 193%. In 2023, 4.1% of all births were to women over 40, slightly surpassing the 4.0% to teens
My daughter got married at 39 and just turned 40. She wants to be a mom so bad, I want to be grandma. Fingers crossed this statistic applies to her one day.
I was 2 months away from turning 40 when I have birth to my youngest. There was a study done showing that mother's who had children later in life live longer
Load More Replies...It was thought that having a baby that late in life was pretty dangerous because of the health risks and the risk of the baby being mentally challenged or frail. I think that's why women had their babies earlier in life. Now it's hard to have a baby earlier because of the everything costing so much.
he Animal Liberation Front (ALF) is an international, leaderless, movement that emerged in Britain in the 1970s. It operates without a formal leadership structure and engages in direct actions aimed at opposing animal cruelty. These actions include removing animals from laboratories and farms, damaging facilities, providing veterinary care, and establishing sanctuaries for the rescued animals. It’s currently active in over 40 countries. Activists associated with the ALF describe the movement as non-violent. According to the ALF’s guidelines, actions that promote animal liberation and take all reasonable precautions to avoid harm to both human and nonhuman life. Despite this, In 2005 the ALF was listed in a United States Department of Homeland Security planning document as a domestic terrorist threat, and in the United Kingdom, ALF activities are classified as examples of domestic extremism.
This does not belong on a wholesome list. There is a reason why they are classed as terrorists. They money claim to be non violent but they have shown to have dubious tactics and have hurt people.
They released a load of Mink from a fur farm. Unfortunately, they released them into the wild so we now have an invasive species that is decimating the population of native fauna from the rivers and canals.
They have no concept of "invasive species." Or animals who can't fend for themselves in the wild.
Load More Replies...The movement is not non-violent. They destroy decades of research. I am against using animals in research, but destroying someone's life work, hurting people as well as property, is not the way to go about it.
Not judging. But I am slightly uncomfortable with this. Not sure why
Maybe they get classed as terrorists because 'decent' humans use animals to test products that have no business being near any animal. I'd give money and resources to them rather than companies who still test on animals when there are volunteers and prisoners who could be tested on.
Unfortunately not. The post makes them look better than they are. They have shown some pretty reprehensible actions. The cause maybe good, but now they go about it is far from good.

This is a great post. But JFC, there are so many negative comments! WHY do some people have to be negative about literally EVERYTHING?? Even a wholesome post like this?? There's already so much sadness and pain in this world. Just enjoy the food for what it is, and stop picking it apart! Dàmn, man. ISTG, some people just aren't happy unless they're UNhappy.
