Actually legally in many places you have every right to trap someone's pet on your property. In my state we can even hire traps from our local council.Although disposing of the animal just anywhere is not right. You are supposed to take the trapped animal to a shelter. The shelter then calls the owners (if microchipped or tagged), the owners then have to pay a fee to get their pet back. Simple solution is to not allow your pets roam and keep them contained on your property.

Foxxy, I love you. I love reading your comments here on BP. But in this one, we will have to agree to disagree. I do see your point, about not wanting pets to roam. It's definitely true that it's not nearly as safe or healthy for a cat to be an 'outside cat' (with the exception of barn cats, who are a very useful and much-needed resource, to the farmers and livestock owners they serve). We can agree on that. But I will never think it's okay to take someone else's pet, that you know is theirs, to a shelter. It's not your pet. You (the proverbial you here, not YOU yourself) have no right to give it away like that. Even if the family does get it back in the end. Forcing them to pay a fee, for their own animal. And if you do this, and don't even tell them, and just let them worry and miss their pet, when you could have told them where it was, the whole time? That's even worse. I get that a person wouldn't like someone else's cat pooping or hunting birds in their yard. 1/2

But what about the hawks and the squirrels and the rabbits who do the same thing? Would you trap them and take them away, too? Would you ban all animal life from your yard, except that of which you personally approve? It's not your pet. It's not your right to take it away from its family. Maybe it shouldn't be an outdoor pet. In fact, it probably shouldn't. But again, it's not your pet. It's not your choice. Shoo it away. Make some 'scarecrows' out of clanging pie pans, to scare it off (if also scaring birds off doesn't bother you). Hèll, I personally would even be okay with a brief squirt from the water hose. It won't hurt the cat, but it'll make him run like hèll, lol. But you don't take something that isn't yours. Even if it is on your property. That just isn't right. And btw, something CAN be legal, and still he wrong, at the same time. This is my strong opinion. I respect yours, even though I don't agree with it. All I ask in return, is the same. 2/2/End

1. Native animals are what need to be protected from cats. Cats are a huge problem in Australia and are responsible (along with foxes) are responsible for the decimation of numerous native species. Cats kill millions of animals a year and not just for food, but also for fun. Trapping a wild animal is NOT the same as trapping someone's pet that is on your property. You don't want your cat trapped, simple be a responsible pet owner and keep it indoors and have an outdoor cat rub or something. You are not entitled to just let your cat do whatever. Would you appreciate someone's pet doing going into your yard, s******g, digging etc. Let alone having dead animal carcasses and feathers scattered about. Our biggest NATIVE carnivore is the Tasmian Devil and can only be found in Tasmania. Our native animals are way too vulnerable to have cats roaming. We have to keep our dogs on our property so you should have the same cuteousy.

2. If you kept your cat on your property then no-one would need to trap it and take it to the shelter. The reason the shelters charge you to get your animal back is to essentially give you a warning to take better care of your animal and stop it from happening again. Just because you want a cat doesn't mean everyone else does and have to put up with irresponsible pet owners. If you don't want to worry about where your cat is, stop letting it roam. As you said "It's not your pet" so why should I have to put up with them on my property. That's the consequences of you allowing your cat to wander. Your responsibility and your fault if anything happens. Simple really.

I guess one positive thing about letting your cat roam free with regards to native wildlife is that cats can make good meals for wild critters! 😬😬😬

I don't think our neighbor realized that was our cat. Kitty didn't have a collar and the neighbor is a couple houses down. But yes, if a neighbor knows whose pet it is they should absolutely have a friendly conversation with the owner and come to some sort of agreement, not just trap the pet and take it to a shelter. Kitties do take a big toll on bird populations, and I have mixed feelings about letting them roam free. But when you adopt a cat that's been indoor/outdoor all its life, it seems cruel to keep it inside.
