The idea behind feel-good stories is that it's important to counteract the negativity of bad news.

Of course, there will always be skeptics who say maintaining optimism in the long run is impossible and that every attempt to prove otherwise is just a form of escapism, but every now and then something happens that puts a smile on your face and makes you believe that we're all going to be OK.

So we at Bored Panda put together a new collection of such moments to remind you that there's still good in this world. Whether it's someone beating an illness or caring for an animal in need, we people are strong and have an endless capacity to love, and we can't forget that.

Continue scrolling to check out the list and if you need more positivity, fire up our earlier publications of the series here, here, and here.

Sometimes, the impulse to consume negative news can be difficult to resist. "We are evolutionarily wired to screen for and anticipate danger, which is why keeping our fingers on the pulse of bad news may trick us into feeling more prepared," says Cecille Ahrens, clinical director of Transcend Therapy in San Diego, California.

Following the news may be necessary to stay informed, especially during a crisis but according to Ahrens, the feelings of fear, sadness, and anger triggered by negative headlines can keep people stuck in a "pattern of frequent monitoring," leading to worse mood and more anxious scrolling (doomscrolling).

Ddoomscrolling can take a toll on mental health. Studies have linked the consumption of bad news to increased distress, anxiety, and depression, even when the news in question is relatively mundane.

Graham Davey, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Sussex, says exposure to bad news can make personal worries seem worse and even cause acute stress reactions and some symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder that can be quite long-lasting.

The root of our interest in bad news may be the result of feeling vulnerable or helpless or overwhelmed.

"Let's say you are feeling stressed out at work and you disengage from your tasks to pick up your phone and doomscroll. Once you catch that compulsive behavior, check in with yourself and ask what it is you are thinking and feeling,” says Megan E. Johnson, a licensed clinical psychologist and researcher specializing in trauma and brain-behavior relationships.

"Once you understand your need, then you can find a realistic and appropriate way to get that need met, rather than compulsively turning to doomscrolling."

Turning to your phone might just distance you from the colleagues and friends and family who could help.

"All it will do is temporarily distract you from your uncomfortable emotion," Johnson adds. "But those unpleasant feelings are there for a reason, and they communicate to us our needs, so we cannot just silence them with distractions. Once you become aware that what you actually need is support, then maybe you can reach out to a colleague and delegate some tasks.”

Given that avoidance might not be practical, experts suggest these three ways to make your experience on the internet more positive:

  • Be mindful of what you consume on social media. If you log on to connect with other people, focus on the personal news and photos shared instead of the latest headlines;
  • Seek out the content that makes you happy to balance out your newsfeed. This may be images of cute kittens, beautiful landscapes, drool-worthy food videos, or something else. You could even follow a social media account dedicated to sharing only happy and positive news;
  • Use social media to promote positivity and kindness. Sharing good things that are happening in your life can improve your mood, and your positive mood can spread to others. You may also like to compliment others on social media. While this might sound awkward, people will appreciate it more than you think.

For many people the start of the pandemic was such an excruciatingly difficult time. People were struggling with isolation, dealing with illness, missing their friends and loved ones, and wondering how they would make ends meet if they lost their job. For many quarantine was not an ideal time. People shouldn’t feel ashamed if they didn’t spend quarantine learning a new language, baking or picking up a new skill. It’s perfectly all right if you were just trying to get by every day and work on your mental health. I would never ever want to live through the isolation and uncertainty of quarantine again.

I wish that was my memory of it, but I'm one of the people who was not let go or furloughed or even able to work remotely. Instead Monday-Friday 10+ hour shifts became 14+ hours per day, 6 (and sometimes 7) days per week. I also will always remember seeing my coworkers fall ill and despite being previously healthy, ending up on ventilators. We lost so many amazing people. I'm happy for all of the people who were able to use this time to relax and focus on themselves but it was hard for the rest of us to see the divide become even greater than it was previously.

Since I suffer from anxiety, it was very important to my mental well being to make something positive out of 2020... I painted the entire interior of my house and every day I look at it, I'm incredibly grateful that I had the time to do that. I also framed a bunch of old family photos of my ancestors and made a beautiful gallery in my hallway.

Aah the workers getting downvoted... Why? Some can celebrate and think back fondly of that time, others think back with stress about that time and complain about it. It's different for everyone. Those who have worked hard would have loved to have time to pursue hobbies. And those who were laid off during that time would have loved to work hard or feel relaxed enough to pursue hobbies.

Wonder why it was downvoted - yes I'd love to have pursued hobbies but I was working for an essential organisation from home, working extra while juggling homeschooling kids. So lots of stress. It was often not a fun or relaxed time and no time for hobbies or new skills. All those parents who posted about their homeschoolday with special activities for the kids made me feel like a lousy parent because I could barely get them to do the basic stuff they needed to do for school. Going to bed with lists that are unfinished and working in extra in the evenings after the kids were in bed to make up for lost worktime. Still my youngest is a bit behind in reading as it was a crucial time in his schooleducation. Maybe next time parents who can't work can take up tutoring kids with parents who have to work. And people without kids can come hone their new skills in my garden and house, doing make overs and such if they'd like to, I have no objections to that.

The pandemic was challenging in so many different ways but one good take-away was the increased interest in gardening. Though it was annoying how quickly the starts (seedlings) and seed packets were bought up it was also a joyful thing. Ron Finley has it right!

I had my first hip replacement September 2019. Very serious surgery after years of chronic pain. The recovery was atrocious. I was just starting to feel a bit better. Then Covid hit. I had the second hip replacement December 2020. Do not have major surgery in a pandemic. Minimal hospital care. Then I had a heart attack three weeks later. The surgery was great. The hospital aftercare nonexistent. Then I got pneumonia. I never saw a real doctor for most of the time. Just Zoom and phone visits. Then my beloved mother died. We had a minimal funeral celebration because of Covid. I am 73 years old. My husband is 84. If it weren't for my lifelong hobbies (piano, crafts, gardening, photography) I would have cracked up completely. And I think I'm well off because I'm retired with some financial resources and family support. Most people I know suffered worse than me. Baking a couple of loaves of banana bread can't make up for financial trauma, family problems, loneliness, medical chaos.
