“Want To Know Why It’s So Hard for Cops To Be ‘Good Apples’”: Whistleblower Ex-Cop Explains In A Viral Twitter Thread
In the wake of the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter movement, more and more people are coming forward to unveil the flaws of the policing system. Ex-cop and former undercover police officer Paul Manning has experienced the harsh reality of working in law enforcement firsthand.
In a now-viral Twitter thread, Paul recounted an episode from 2007, when he was assisting a call with an officer he’d never met before. “Right in front of me, he broke a kid’s nose with a punch. The septum was clearly deviated,” Paul started off the thread. He went on to detail how the policing system dealt with him just like they do with all officers who tried to do the right thing. Paul said that he “used this story because it showed every step of a system used to demoralize anyone who would report wrongdoing.” But as the thread evolves, it turns out, this is just a tip of the iceberg in what Paul calls “a massive corruption scandal.”

Paul Manning, a former Hamilton police officer in Ontario, Canada, worked undercover targeting organized crime and the members of Musitano crime family. He spent over a year living in the community and engaging in criminal activity.
According to his Wikipedia page, the operation was compromised due to an intelligence breach suffered by the Ontario Provincial Police back in the late 2006. In a 2015 statement, Paul stated he was nearly killed after his cover was blown. He also alleged his identity was revealed to a crime family by a high-ranking Hamilton officer.
Paul was diagnosed with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder in 2013 and determined unable to work. CBC reported that he filed a lawsuit in 2016 seeking $6.75 million in damages “for what he describes as irreversible damage to his mental health in how he was treated by the service while he worked undercover and afterward.”

Share on FacebookIt's exactly what I expected though. I can only assume there are so many bad cops that, if they disciplined them properly, they'd have very few left. Maybe that's what they need to do. Then start with a new group and a new culture.
Load More Replies...Fits my local PD. Change was brought in. The new chief was great. The PD dug in and did every passive-resistance thing they could. Reformer chief retired. Within a year? Tear gas for "obstructing a driwavey" (the bus stop was not even a yard from this "obstruction", AKA people! ... Then the infamous 11-12 August 2017 mess in Charlottesville. Wher ethe chief resistor to reform was in charge of direction "operations"... Which didn't exist till the blood was already flowing and the National Guard was on its way. Like we didn't already dread cops as neighbors, let alone as actual cops?... Yep. Abuse of power is the kindest term for it.
This demonstrates exactly what people miss with the bad apples analogy - a single bad apple is all it takes to spoil an entire barrel. All the good apples need to do is sit there and the corruption will spread to them. You have to seek out the bad apples and get rid of them if you want any good apples left at all. And corrupt cops don't even make good cider.
I've always had this theory that if a cop is a decent human being he/she will be compelled to quit at some point in their career.
Yes Susan! Who wants to work w murderers and defend them at that?? I would quit definitely
Load More Replies...Thank you, Paul Manning, for doing the right thing over and over and over again.
This is a sad commentary on the state of law enforcement in the U.S. We definitely need an overhaul of how cops are trained, organized and overseen. We need more accountability so good cops are rewarded and rotten ones punished. Where's Frank Serpico when you need him?
The tip of the pyramid is to blame for all of this. As in his example, it kept Going higher and higher, and the higher it went, the more he got into trouble for doing the right thing. And even if you cut the head of the snake, the brotherhood is so strong that you need to take each and one of them into accountability.
Maybe more sisters in said "brotherhood" would be a start... just saying.
What's weird is that some PDs are shocked they are getting exposed. How long did they think this putridness would go "undetected"?
It's like this since at least the seventies, it's a mafia, Serpico was 49 years ago, and no, it wasn't "just a movie".
That is what happen in all police and military corps. It is called "korsa" in Indonesian.. It is too are common here..
Remember, over 85% of Police Officers are those S****y little Punks we used to beat the s**t out of in High School. With a badge and gun, they are now free to now be the Bullies. Life is funny that way.
I've said it before and will continue to say, "There is Nothing wrong with shooting or killing cops". It is sad however, that the wrong ones end up being shot.
Thank you. I know there are racist officers, but as I saw so many things unfold lately, I could not help but think this is not all about race. I have seen officers abuse their power and play the role of judge and jury.
Yes I sued. I am a woman. I also won. As for good cops quitting. Yes they should. Enough of them they can gather and make a change instead of doing it alone. If enough quit they will be able to speak and make a difference. Why so hard to understand? Worked for me and the women that took down a corporate office.
It's so sad that there are bad cops in the world, but we have to remember that there are some good cops as well. Unfortunately, a lot of the good cops are overshadowed by the behavior of the bad cops. This is not every police department, but a few.
Good u live in a weird racist bubble. It's been proven black people do not commit more crime it's white people that get off for committing crimes. Black people are targeted and lied about constantly by the police. Period. It's plain old everyday horrendous violent racism that makes you repeat this uneducated stupid argument.

As much as a lot of people like to portrait American cops as a well trained force, the stories about the blue wall of silence, their misconduct and their abuse of powers are numerous. Youtube has a lot of video's showing how cops harras, intimidate and physically attack people minding their own business. Simple fact is that American cops are trained in fighting, shooting and driving cars, but have no clue about social skills or deescalation and how to be a real cop. And that's the exact reason why all peaceful protests in the US are met with teargas, mace, batons and rubber bullets.
Load More Replies...So you're saying you understand there are good ol' boys in the police. You're saying in your town, things were so corrupt that 3/4 of the force were convicted and jailed. You're saying that you have been robbed by other cops. You have accepted unwarranted police assault as the norm. But your conclusion is that not all cops are bad. Dude, you've pretty much proved just the opposite in your post.
