I'm curious to know how other young girls and women experienced their first periods. What were they told by their peers, siblings,parents,friends and classmates? How did their mothers respond? Were they supportive? What did they tell you about your first period and/or menstruation in general?

Was in a clothing store around Christmas time, went to the bathroom and found blood, shoved toilet paper in my pants so I could get a pad for 10 cents the pad producer didn't work. So I went to find my mom, thank goodness we had pads in the van cuz I had (have)a very heavy cycle! My sisters mom and I got doughnuts as a celebration
For starters I was a late bloomer getting my period. My mother told my cousin to "deal with it" when I told her I got my period. Later, in high school the gym teacher and assistant made me turn around so they could see blood on my pants.They were smirking. As a result I always felt ashamed and guilty when I got my period. On my honeymoon my ex wouldn't even touch me or, God forbid, consummate our marriage.
I was 9. My mother cried hysterically and had to be removed from the bathroom. She never explained anything but I read a book at the library and did just fine by myself. But I did get a long list of rules from her family for my “new life as a young lady” though. Cramped my style for a few years but then I realized I didn’t have to listen to anyone. And I still don’t. :)
I was 12, in a witch-supplies store with my mom and her friend. Told them I got my period and we rushed home (stopping by a store on the way to get pads/tampons). We had the whole talk, everyone was super supportive. Later that night we went to a Joan Jett and Heart Concert.
My mom had an audience in the bathroom of us kids through my childhood so very early i asked questions and she answered them honestly. I was twelve and it was New Year's eve. I felt like i had a stomach ache. When i went to the bathroom, well, there it was. Grabbed a pad, because that's what Mom used. Got myself suited up. Kind of a non event really
I was excited to become a woman until the 5th grade, when we learned about all the symptoms that Aunt Flo brought. I dreaded the day it would come. When I started experiencing PMS like symptoms I was devastated, because my 12 year old self didn’t know you could get such extreme cramps before your period.
Now I just want my first period to come because I’m an emotional wreck who’s in pain all the time.
