Now that we're presented with multiple streaming platforms such as Netflix, HBO, Hulu, etc., that provide us with different TV shows and movies, it seems that everyone is giving their best recommendations left to right. Now that we have access to an unlimited number of movies, TV shows, documentaries, and other types of visuals, we’ve also become quite meticulous and picky about what we watch and what we expect from creators. One Reddit user @u/MainCrab1383 was curious to know from other internet users and movie lovers what are some of the annoying things they hate seeing on screen, so they asked: “What do you wish Hollywood would stop doing?” The question received 29k answers that stressed various issues in the movie industry.
A lot of us will agree that making a movie is a huge and very intricate project that requires a lot of attention, resources, and talent. Very often movies and TV series are created in a way to appeal to their audience, in some way appear relatable to what is happening in our everyday life. But sometimes all that relatability goes out the window the second we see an actor or an actress pretending to be drinking from an empty cup or driving a car and not properly looking at the road because they're having a heated argument with the passenger next to them. Not to mention “having a main character whose job/income level does not match their home or lifestyle at all,” as noticed by Reddit user @Stellathewizard.

Messing up the sound mix so that we have to constantly adjust the volume for music and dialogue.
And, although slightly off topic, that also goes for TV channels that whack the sound up when the adverts come on.
The music should never be louder than the dialogue. Commercials should never be louder than the average sound level of what its airing between. And there should always be captions / subtitles available to those who want/need them.
I have to use subtitles on films these days because there’s always so much noise and music over the speech.

Having the music and the sound effects going to the main channel and the dialog going to the surround sound speakers seems to be happening more often. Of course removing the option for mono-channel sound does not help.
Or using music to "tell us" how to feel. We are FULLY aware of which parts are sad, intense or exciting.
Apparently Samsung makes a soundbar or two that have the smartsound setting. This was a feature of the Magnavox TV's in the past that automatically adjusted the sound to an even level.
There used to be TVs that kept the sounds even! The new ones we have (>5 years old) don’t even have this option anymore! The commercials can legally be as loud as the loudest part of the movie/tv show. I just lower the volume and use closed caption so much now that my 6yo requests it if it’s not on.
I feel like one of these days, we're just gonna hear that Christopher Nolan died of a brain tumor or something. His sound mixing is getting worse every movie...

It seems to me like every movie and tv shows made in at least the last five years has this issue. Turning on the sound leveling option on the TV does help but it doesn't make it any less annoying.
I'm hard of hearing and this is so frustrating! I turn the volume up to hear what they are saying and then I'm suddenly making the neighbors jump out of their skins.
Segments of the show and commercials come from different sources at times. Different operators can be working on each file as well that airs. Plus if it is a local break that comes from a different source as well.
I hate this so much. As a contrast I'm glad video games come with separate music sfx and voice sliders.

Watching Snowpiercer, I felt like I was driving her with my remote control, the way I was mashing buttons at a moments notice, keeping an eye on the tracks ahead.
It’s even worse if you wear hearing aids. You have to crank the volume to hear the dialogue and then the music/background noises just about blow your head off. Thankfully I found a sound bar designed especially to deal with this problem.

That is the cinema mix setting. Since you crank up the volume in cinema and have a wider set of speakers with subwoofers, you need different settings. Used to watch stuff in a home cinema. Totally different experience. Now I hate how loud it is overall.
A while back they had a TV that would auto adjust the volume and to stay at the same volume no matter what. I don't think the TV advertisers like that very much. And Gone with the Wind it was.
We need to start a collective law suit for arm injuries from watching movies with the TV remote out to change the volume every 20 seconds

Thiiiiis. Especially crime dramas; you can barely hear the dialogue and then bam bam bam! A shootout. Horrible, especially when watching late at night.

This! Omg this! I suffer from migraines and I can't tell you how many have been triggered by this whisper dialogue and then rock concert music in the same show. I end up watching with subtitles trying to avoid a migraine triggering sound issue.

Chances are the dialogue was lame (particularly if it's an action movie) and they're masking it with the rest of the mix.

I f*****g cannot stand characters who are driving and talking to a passenger but NOT WATCHING THE ROAD. They think the same courtesy rules of eye contact apply even when you are a conversant behind the wheel.

Making movies where the 1 good guy defeats 20 bad guys because the 20 bad guys attack the 1 good guy one by one.
Making women “perfect” all the time. I don’t want to see a post apocalyptic world or a safari adventure where the women have their makeup done, hair styled and armpits shaved. It’s incredibly unrealistic but then again.. so is everything else
This has been examined extensively by feminist critics: instead of real humans with flaws and agency and character development, women are portrayed as sprung from the womb morally and physically flawless, their only purpose in life to be vessels of resentment against two-dimensional misogynists. Casting really well known, good looking actors as voice actors. Why not hire someone that might have a harder time getting lead roles 8 in live action movies?

Stop recreating bad versions of good classic movies.

Everything is a franchise now. How many sequels can we get out of this? I was so super excited when they announced the first Transformers film, it did not live up to its promise though, and the rest of the films? They have nearly destroyed my childhood love of the Transformers. They should just re release the proper Transformers Movie.
I wish Hollywood would stop treating the medium of animation as something inherently inferior to live action. I also wish 2D animation was used more for movies.
Screwing over special effects companies with contracts that won't keep the lights on, resulting in them going under, sometimes, right after winning an Oscar for their efforts.
Screwing over talent with contracts that offer points on the box office, and then claiming that their biggest hit of the decade made no money.

They're trying to skip the work of creating depth. Shows like X-Files, Buffy, West Wing, Supernatural, etc. and movies like LotR and Star Wars.... the reason why they're cult classics is because people dug into them on their own and started talking on message boards and having discussions, etc. The worlds were all very rich to begin with and grew over the course of years, in some cases. Movies/tv now are trying to get the same 'feeling' without the time and effort it takes to make it that. They think they're just going to manufacture it by putting a superhero in it and calling it a 'universe' when they haven't even flushed out the original movie yet to give it more depth and weight and character development. If you think about John Wick- there was an example of a movie that gave a lot of weight to the characters and the environment. The hotel, the money system, the women in the phone office... it had these great details that created a universe you wanted to know more about.
Adapting s**t into live-action movies when they should really be animated.
Examples include upcoming Mega Man, Pac-Man and Minecraft movies which are ***ALL*** set to be live-action.

All great answers but what I've seen lately is just a lot of whacky decision making. There's multiple video game adaption movies and TV shows come out lately that miss the mark completely. Resident Evil/Halo Etc.
I know adaptations always have their quirks and things that would outrage a fan base but geez. The Halo TV show really felt like they just wanted to write their own story with already existing characters. It all comes down to executive decision.
I just wish the creators have more control over their projects. Instead of having execs with no creative abilities suggesting "Maybe you should make the super-soldier get out of his augmented power armor and instead just fight naked, also make him want to bang the enemy like Romeo & Juliette."

Horror films are the worst for this (there's a murderer somewhere in the house but instead of running outside and seeking help I'll lock myself in the bedroom and use a hairbrush as a weapon to defend myself).

Showing birth as something that goes from zero to a woman screaming and a 3 month old baby popping out.
Not explaining something that would easily resolve a conflict. Rom-coms are the worst, but every movie is guilty of that nowadays. Also, orphans, prophecies and any other lazy writing trope that's just taken for granted. If you can't write something new, get out of the way for those who can.
1. The nerdy-looking guy who is looked down upon by everybody including the hot popular girl but at the end of the movie wins the heart of the girl. 2. Protagonist running towards the danger instead of running away from it. 3. The protagonist about to be thrown out of school, college, job, etc., until he/she makes an inspirational speech that gets the protagonist to stay.
I have to say for me, it’s incredibly bad science. I can gloss over the odd little bit of artistic license but “The neutrinos are mutating”? How about a biologist looking at a new species and immediately attempting to pet it? I’m looking at you Prometheus. Let’s not even get into the cartographer getting lost and the “just run sideways” moment.

Bad guys, whether from the 1300s or the year 3045 are all dressed in black leather and seem to have personal tailors. Where do they get all that black dye? Leather is not naturally black. Was there a galatic meeting that devreed all bad guys must wear black leather, for ever more? Don't they have to go to the bathroom? Or sweat? I understand condensing a story to fit in a limited amount of time, but stop changing the story altogether. If you're going to do that just say something like "loosely based on [insert book name] by [author]"
Choosing popular actors with bad accents (i.e. Irish) over actual native actors. Overdoing the political correctness (actors of colour for historical roles when people of colour were not yet accepted into the upper classes). Hiring actors from Mediterranean countries to play Native Americans (this is popular in certain European productions).
Driving a car with the column shifter in Park. Cars without rearview mirrors. Paper grocery bags that are full but obviously light with non-shifting groceries within.

So this is a bit obscure, but when they add sound effects to guns that don't fit with the gun. The most common example is "cocking the glock". Someone will be holding a glock (or other gun without an exposed hammer) and they'll add the sound effect of a hammer being thumb cocked for dramatic effect. Even worse is when an actor is holding a double barrel shotgun and they'll add the sound of a pump. It really kills the immersion.
