This heartwarming photo of a dad soaking in the rain so that his son could stay dry went viral after it was anonymously uploaded on Imgur. The little boy seems almost oblivious to his father’s discomfort, though it’s clear that dad’s shirt has been soaked through completely.
This dad is doing much more than keeping his son dry – he’s teaching him to put someone else’s well-being ahead of his own.

Holding a 45+ lbs squirmy child is not as easy as you think it is. The father could need his arms for something, and they could be walking for a very long period of time. In theory, your idea is good but in reality it isn't practical.

This can have the reverse outcome unfortunately. I always put my sons first and now they believe that is their entitlement.
It's not about what you did, it's how you put it. There're ways to put our kids first, but letting them know it is an act of love, not an act of parenting obligation. Humans are creatures who will exploit obligation but have the perspective to appreciate love. Have faith a little , will you? Besides, what sort of parents are afraid of being taking advantaged of? Kids are all you have in the remaining days, what are you afraid of?

any parent will tell you, dealing with sick kid is a way bigger hassle than getting sick yourself
What a great dad! Showing his kid by example of how to think of others first.
Sharing the umbrella would have sent a stronger message to the kid about thinking of others apart from himself but it was probably too awkward to bend down and/or pick him up, let's be honest and not get too gooey.
I think it would be pretty cumbersome to carry the boy, the umbrella, and his briefcase.
