Here’s A Vintage Photo Collection Of Strange Men’s Hairstyles Throughout The Centuries
We associate men's fashion of past centuries with class and neatness. When we look at those times, we're used to seeing tidy facial hair, slick pomades, fancy hats, and suits. Today's post will change the perception a little bit. Well, in terms of hair, at least. For there have always been fashion renegades, or just people with bad hair days, or just bad hair in general.
Robert E. Jackson is an avid collector of vintage photography. He has over three thousand photos in his collection. He either got them anonymously, or sought them out, but in any case, he has ownership of all of them. The vast collection has many peculiar images, some of which we show to you today.
He shares vintage photos spanning from the early days of photography to the late 20th century, where you can see the strange hairstyles of men. They're definitely not what we expect of those times in terms of men's hairstyles. The rhyme and reason for having such hairstyles eludes us, and there's not much that we can do to find out, but they definitely spark some curiosity.

The collection is also useful to see how fashion has evolved over the centuries. Though some of these shown hairstyles didn't fit into their time, they would probably be pretty cool nowadays, and some of them are trendy, or at least acceptable. Some of them are just... well, terrible, and will never become trendy. But who knows?...
The guy on the right has great hair! I wore mine like that in the 90s.
If you like this collection by Robert E. Jackson, you're probably going to like his other photos of the olden days. Though his Instagram has a modest followership of 4.8k followers, his collection is anything but modest. So check him out, and see what other kinds of peculiar images you can find! There's much to see: from strange portraits to nostalgic Americana. It's safe to say that it's a true chronicle of amateur American photography.
I can't decide if this is more "Little Rascals" or "the Three Stooges"...
like, you know they're meant to look odd or weird but some of these guys really pull off their hairstyles tastefully
Load More Replies...I have a feeling this was taken just after the Civil War. It's the eyes of a man who has seen too much.
ahhhh. i knew there had to be a good pic of keith richard in his youth...
I like this one the best. At least it looks like an accident on purpose.
Idk this was ever a style. Never seen it. Obviously there's a few pics with this cut.
Don't let the glasses fool you. He's going to tie your daughter to some train tracks.
I remember kids getting their hair like this...in funny shapes too. Ahh the late 80s- 90s
Okay but nowhere as crazy as women's beehives or '80s bangs. Just saying, I saw a pic in my mom's yearbook from 1965 and was laughing at how huge this girl's beehive was and my mom straight up says " yeah she would hide her switchblade in it" WTF 😂
Love this!! Some of these were really not that weird--but maybe it's just the more I looked at them, the more normal they looked.
Too bad there were no dates on these. I'd be interested to know when these were considered "fashionable" hair styles.
Looks like most of the older photos the guys either creamed down their hair or didn’t wash it for months
What did they use before modern shampoo and conditioner?
Load More Replies...Not 'strange men's hairstyles'. Correct grammar is 'men's strange hairstyles'. It is the hairstyles that are strange, not the men.
The worst hairstyles in these pics are all due to curly hair, the lack of flattering haircuts and no hair products. I gets lots of compliments on my curly hair but I know that if I was born in those days, my hair would have been a complete nightmare!
I just had to quit looking. It was just awful! Did they think they looked attractive?
Any one of these hair styles would go almost unnoticed on the street in today's culture.
OK but does anyone else think it's funny that we're laughing at the bad haircuts of past generations now of all times? I'm talking to you out there with the DIY disaster buzz and crooked bangs. It has been over a year since I've had a haircut because of the pandemic and I look like an 80s headbanger rocking dark roots and 3 inches of severely damaged ends. At least these dos are intentional - gotta give them that!
there weren't the sort of hair products we have today so you were sort of stuck with what it did naturally.
5 % of the world's population have curls. Yet 50 % of the pictures in your freak show are of people with curly or waivy hair. How is that not discrimination, blatant racism? Why do you find it okay to assemble a freak show of people who happen to come from an ethnicity with hair outside of the "norm", i.e. hair that does something else than just fall? Would you assemble the same freak show with people of skin tones that are "not what we expect", or physical deformations, or body heights that are "not what we expect"? Please, PLEASE stop viewing discrimination only in the established narrow categories of skin tone or disability! Having EXPECTATIONS about how ones hair, clothes, face etc. should look does just as much damage to those who happen to look NOT like "what we expect".
