The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’
Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.
"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.
"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."
According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.
This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.
"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.
"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.
Forget just letting him off the hook - he deserves a goddamn medal for that.
"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.
Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.
"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.
"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.
"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.
an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”
Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.
"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.
Honesty is the best policy and pay off!!! So thankful for this lady's kindness to help make a change in this mans life. Very wholesome
"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”
Dangerous but good for one health as a result. Glad he was okay afterwards.
The Rolling Stones did the same thing in Dallas on their "Steelwheels" tour. We were waaaaay back from the stage at the Cotton Bowl. Saw a guy wearing an official lanyard walking up to people, looking at their tickets and exchanging them. When he did everyone would have a big smile and head off. When he got to us, he exchanged our crappy tickets for 8 rows from the stage. Best concert ever!
That happened to us at KISS a few months ago. We had $20 lawn seats, they bumped us to 3rd row center
Load More Replies...Silly, it was always burning as the world was turning.
Load More Replies...Madonna did this too in Los Angeles. My 2 friends and I were literally against the back wall at a stadium. One of her security guards invited us 3 to the 2nd row and oh lord, we could see her smile at us and sweat on her brow!! Best performance ever. That woman can moooove. Love her and now I love Billy Joel even more, if that’s possible, hearing he does the same.
Quite the opposite of what rapper 50 Cent once did to his rival Ja Rule: He bought 200 front row tickets for Ja Rule's concert and scrapped them, so Ja Rule would have to perform in front of empty seats.
Ja Rule could have upgraded 200 people like Billy Joel did.
Load More Replies...I had this happen at a Tori Amos concert when I was a teenager! It’s one of my favorite memories. We were in the very back, almost completely behind a column. A guy in a fancy suit came through and handed us 2 front row tickets. I’ll never forget it!
"Rent" the musical always had a standing line "day of" free tickets for the front row for starving artists (and anyone else who couldn't afford tickets but could manage to set aside time to stand in line).
Paul McCartney does something similar. It happened to me and my daughter back in 2016. We had seats in the nose bleed section, but ended up in the middle of the second row. It was a magical evening for both of us.
Yes!!! That's how we got tickets to see Robin Williams Live !! What a surprise that was and he was Awesome!
Metallica, U2, and Bruce Springsteen do this too. Garth Brooks consulted with all four artists/groups when he decided to do the same.
Bette Midler has been doing this for about 30 years. However, if people can for the front row to enjoy the concert, maybe it’s some thing a true friend saved for also.
If you gonna be bored in the front row why by the tickets idiot rich people
That's similar to Garth Brooks. His tickets are the same price no matter where you sit. It's too bad more musicians don't do this.
Sounds like message given us in the Gospel - Jesus' message of how to treat those with less of this world's goods! Thank you, Billy Joel!
That makes so much sense that helps you give a better show and there's so much more appreciative of the opportunity to be that close
but then the rich people would just get the worst seats so they could be in the front row..
I got one of the tickets with one of my girlfriends. The guy giving us the tickets said that Billy likes for pretty women up front. When we got to the front, we were surrounded by beautiful women. Still nice though.
More musicians should adapt this. Good for him for taking this into his own hands. Making dreams come true and surprising fans
I saw Billy Joel in 1978. I was behind the stage in the top row. I was worried that it would be a bad seat. I was wrong. That concert is in my top 5 favorite concerts.
Its usually attractive young women. His team told my aunt that in the 80s when she got brought down from the nosebleeds. She and her friend left their dates and enjoyed the concert in the front row
Its usually hot women. My aunt was brought down once at one of his shows in the 80s or 90s I can't remember but it was a lot of young attractive women she said
I totally get that, but if the people in the bad seats go to the front there are some seats left open and some people won't be able to get a seat, even though they're empty. Great policy, just hope it can be executed differently.
I absolutely love Billy Joel! My parents listened to his growing up so I grew up loving his music & now I can appreciate it being a lot older I can understand the things he speaks about!
He also likes to randomly dispose of his band musicians like damp tissues, sooo... that.
I went to a circus that had different seating for different prices. The expensive seats had the best view. When the circus started, if there were unoccupied expensive seats, the people in the cheap seats were allowed to move to them. A rich couple left afterwards, wondering why there were different prices if seating wasn't enforced. I think the reason is that everyone in a circus is low income and sympathetic to the fact a lot of people can only see the circus if it's super cheap. At the same time, selling super cheap tickets won't generate enough income for the circus. This was a great compromise that gave the poorest people a shot at the magic. The only people be upset by it were the ones with the mindset that they can only enjoy the things they pay for if other people can't have it too-- the people who buy status, not seating.
If I were to ever develop talent like this and become famous, this is exactly what I'd do. Or id like.. find my fans on YouTube/Instagram and invite them to my shows in their cities for free. Too bad I'm not talented and nobody would ever pay to see me do anything. Bahaha
True fact! My family were one of the fortunate ones picked out from the crowd! Great show.
This is one story I didn't want to know about. I feel like ppl are going to take advantage of this now.
Well, maybe I am not crafty enough, but I don't think there's any way people could abuse this... There are many, many nosebleed seats and the crew just randomly selects a few of them for upgrades, so it's not like the concert goers can plan for it... The worst that would happen is the nosebleed seats would sell a little faster, right?
Load More Replies...Unusual, but he IS an unusual performer, I like him and his wonderful generosity.
Or he could sell the tickets so that not only rich people could afford them.
There's a problem with (at least) Ticket Master--and they are the only ones allowed to sell tickets in some places. They hike the price, and then scalpers buy them en masse. Artists have taken Ticket Master to court, but it requires government action.
Load More Replies...Great idea if it's a one-off/occasional random decision... But wouldn't this just encourage people to buy the cheap tickets? And what about the die-hard fans who spent their entire savings (or even had to get credit) to buy more expensive tickets? Don't like to put a damper on his generosity but his good deed seems a little unfair to me...
It's probably random who gets the seats though. I mean I'm not familiar with the practice, but if it were me I'd have them pick more-or-less randomly out of all the cheap-to-middle seats, so you know you could be lucky but you're still not really buying a front row seat. (I say more or less just to mean I'd say don't select anyone who looks unenthusiastic, or is making trouble)
Load More Replies...I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.
At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Good for you Dad! Glad he recovered. The gun was a little much but...it saved his life.
Yet again, an amazing human. It's just sad that for every Bob Ross, we get 200 eejits.
Here is a list of people living in abject poverty before becoming famous Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Tiffany Haddish, Kat Graham, Chris Pratt, Annie Murphy, Amara La Negra, Chris Hemsworth, Chrissy Metz, Jennifer Lopez (who was homeless), Richard Madden, Ed Sheeran, etc etc etc. There are also people who became rich and/or famous and ended without a dime or roof over their heads

This was very interesting! Such a good early morning read. Thanks for sharing!
Such beautiful stories give a fresh counter balance to regular news. Thank you :)
You did a great job, Jonas. The best comment was the from the person pointing out that the forest/woods weren't infested with bears and wolves, they lived there! I laughed out so loud I woke my baby up!!! So fact or fiction, it was an absolute good time for this insomniac! Thanks for that!
Hit some highs and lows for me emotionally. Great light read. Full of meaningfulness and life. Love bored panda!!
Gosh. I sure wish there was something called Fact Checking to make sure things you call facts are actually true. I wish there was SOME way to make sure before publishing a list of facts. Sigh. Oh well. Guess we'll all just have to keep assuming everything in print is true, eh?

Reading these a second time, a lot of details seemed likely distorted or just plain BS. The first time, I bought in totally lol!
Thank u very much for including my God Eminem in this twice!!
#24 So... she didn't give the guy $4000 HERSELF but rather asked strangers to make her look good... yeah, great achievement~ 😕 #44 Haha isn't this playboy story depicts what's happening right now? Critical race theory, quotas for LGBT in different spheres (it's rather hypocritical for the community striving for equality to hire ppl/giveout subsidies based on their sexual orientation and not on their skills/financial situation). Being straight isn't cool the media tells us, and if you're white - you're de facto racist (even if you're a kid)~
As was mentioned in comments, I didn’t need to cry today. Or perhaps 🤔 I did.

I read about how our attentionspan has kind of shortened, and this morning on childrens tv channel I noticed the the "shows" are mostly less than 5 minutes long. Yesterday I was in school with 6 year olds. They were watching a movie for children and the teacher stopped it, and asked did they wanted a break or view the rest. They unanimously asked to view on without any break. It makes me think.
Totally love these types of reads .. I have adhd so little facts and different information totally kept me wanting to see what was the next fact info

This list is cool, but one thing that I've learned is that pictures with said events are not usually telling the whole story or/are completely false.
I find it interesting that the article talks about shortt attention span and shallow understanding of a topic while condensing factoids into the very thing the article criticizes.
