I don’t know about you, Pandas, but cool facts are like Pringles to me: once you have one, then you want another, and soon enough you just can’t stop yourself from having more and more. And I’m not the only one with an appetite for learning new things!

A whopping 1.2 million people follow the ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram page and they can’t get enough of the tantalizing trivia it shares on their social media feeds. We’ve collected some of the most interesting history and science facts shared by the page for you to enjoy as well, dear Readers, so have a scroll down and upvote the ones that you found interesting and surprising.

Did any of these facts change how you view the world? Did you by any chance know every single fact in this article? Do you have any cool trivia to share with all the other Pandas? You can share your thoughts, feelings, and opinions in the comment section. Ready to learn some awesome stuff? Let’s go!

More info: Instagram | App

The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’

Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.

"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.

If two people are doing the same job, they both should be getting the same wage if there skills are equal. I don't give a damn what color they are or what sex they are.

Now that society is anti-male, men should go on strike. Suicide rates (but we only hear about the crisis of teenage girls committing suicide). Women live longer than men (but more medical research resources are spent on women's health care). For men, longer prison sentences, Selective Service registration, most occupational deaths, more likely to be victims of crime, and on and on. Women don't want more rights, they want more privileges.

It's almost as if sexism hurts everyone. All those things you mentioned are because of sexism. I fully agree that sexism isn't okay. Society isn't anti-male. It's anti everyone. Everyone gets negatively affected when sexism and racism rear their ugly heads. Treating anyone differently because of something so inane and stupid doesn't help anyone. Abuse to anyone isn't okay.

In India it's given in the constitution on the attainment of freedom from the British But mostly their vote is influenced by the men folks in the family especially non Hindu families. Sad that being able to vote still doesn't mean freedom.

There is a theater piece dating back to ancient greek times about women going on sex strike because they are fed up with an ongoing war and losing their husbands and sons to the eternal fighting. They leave their homes and stay in the local temple so the men can’t touch or reach them. The piece is called Lysistrata. Needless to say, the strike works. ;-)

We do. We also run the power plants, water systems, sewer systems, police and fire departments, the military. So if men went on strike women would be sitting in the dark, with no potable water or sanitary systems, with criminals breaking into their homes, as fires burn uncontrolled. Not to mention getting raped when invading armies reach them.

Many places, including the U.S. could learn from Iceland. Maybe all women in the all over the world need to go on strike at the same time, world wide, even if it's the middle of the night ( heck, were a strong batch of women here in the U.S. well march in the middle of the night) maybe THEN we will be treated with dignity and respect and won't have some political MEN telling us what we can and cannot do with our own bodies. ( I.e. when men can conceive children, and have monthly periods then they can discuss with us OPTIONS about planned Parenthood and when it is ok to carry a baby or getting birth control etc... If men were the ones getting pregnant you KNOW the population would go WAAAAYYYYY down, as they can not handle physical pain like women can)

Iceland does not have the highest gender equality in the world. That prize goes to Denmark. Iceland is eighth – behind Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Source – Statista: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1221060/most-gender-equal-countries-in-the-world (I think you've got confused with the gender pay gap. And as we've seen from recent events in Iran, equality is about far more than pay alone.)

Very smart move, people need to realise that when you plan and organise properly you can achieve almost any goal. Just think what would happen in America if all the immigrants that are criticised daily just suddenly stopped working even for only 5 minutes, the chaos that resulted would be a perfect example of just how much America relies on those people in a daily basis.

India had its first female leader in 1966 with Indira Gandhi. Israel had its first female leader in 1969 (Golda Meir). And the UK elected Thatcher as its first female head of government in 1979, a year earlier than Iceland's leader. But Gandhi, Meir, and Thatcher were all prime ministers and not presidents, so technically, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was in fact the world's first female PRESIDENT. A bit misleading.

Do female programmers make less than male programmers? Because if you are just comparing all women to all men, you have to take into account actual job and hours worked, in addition to their actual bargaining. I know a woman who for a while got paid less than she should have simply because she didn't ask for a raise. I told her to just go and ask for one and tell her boss what she felt she deserved. She did just that and her boss actually agreed and gave her what she wanted. Nobody will give you anything if you don't ask for it.

Here in the USA we'd just get the creepy Evangelical females talking about how "Western women have turned away from their proper place as god's little submissives and that's why men are now all gay." Something like that. One of the many reasons America should ACTUALLY seperate church and state, but we have a "good little wifey" in a stolen seat on the Supreme Court plotting with a sexual predator (and proven thief and liar) to steal more rights from women, so I don't see this happening any time soon.

Iceland has an uncorrected pay gap (which we all know is a bullcrap meaningless statistical artefict) of 13,8%, worse than Poland or Greece or half of the other EU countries. So even here it shows that women in rich countries can afford to choose low-paying, but otherwise satisfying jobs.

I'm an advocate of equal pay for women, but I have a problem with the way the equal pay argument is presented in America. In many instances, the statistics they use to support a pay gap turn out to be an "apples to oranges" comparison, they aren't comparing equal jobs or considering whether the people holding those jobs have equal education, experience or number of work hours. The most common occupations that women have pursued have tended to be lower paying then the most common male occupations, although that is changing over time as more women pursue careers in higher paying occupations that traditionally have been overwhelmingly male (ie. STEM professions). If you were to compare the salaries of male and female doctors (in various specialties), nurses and administrators (with similar education, experience, etc), there would be very little difference in pay.

There was a ancient Greek play called Lysistrata by Aristophanes (411 b.c.) that was performed based on a true account of the organized shutout as no woman of Athens would have sex with their men , husbands till they put down their weapons and stopped warring with other Grecian city states re the Peloponnesian War. It’s a comedy. Only till equality if the FeMale (the true Iron man) as the Spirit of God will we will all be more truly free in a more just, harmonious, compassionate world. The Aquarian age has arrived and has around 1,250 years to succeed and allow our earth, the kingdoms of minerals, plants, animals, elementals, human to hueman … evolution to a higher vibration.

I read all the comments. I can't believe my country is a rara avis. In Argentina there's equal pay since ever. I can't believe women in the USA, Canada or Europe don't. Are you sure you have the facts right? If you are getting less bucks than a man for THE SAME WORK, THE SAME HOURS, THE SAME CREDENTIALS, THE SAME STUDIES, why weren't all men fired? Why would any company keep men working for them if they can get women for less? Are they stupid? The fact is WOMEN AND MEN ARE GETTING EXACTLY THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR THE SAME JOB.

If only the women of the United States could put aside their differences to get this kind of control. It would be glorious!

Well done them, but your fact about the first female president is off - Sirimave Bandaranaike of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) was elected as head of the country (ok as Prime Minister, but that's semantics) in 1960 also, Golda Meir of Israel in 1969 and Indira Ghandi of India in 1969 amongst others .....

Amazing turnout out by Íslendingar women - Australia take note! Not entirely factual with the rest - Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was the first country in the world to elect a female prime minister - Sirimavo Bandaranaike in 1960

That would not happen now, and I doubt ever in the US. Half the women in this country voted for Trump, a misogynist. Racist, xenophobe, narcissist etc., and are happy to let men run everything, including their reproductive organs.

They could barely cope because they were still breaking their backs working full time while supporting entire household which included the women who obviously felt entitled to be supported while they walked off and did nothing. It's easier to wreak havoc when you're getting a free ride.

It seems like you don't understand what equal pay means. It means that if a man and a woman are doing the same job, the woman should be paid as much as the man since it is the same job. So when you say "equal pay for same work" you're actually advocating for equal pay. SMH.

So I doubt the men couldn't cope part. . Maybe because if you take away half the work force. But not because men are some how not able to survive with out women. Why do we always have to spin the a positive story negative by attacking the other side.

If there really was gender inequality as they imagined, every company would hire women only, to save costs. But since the paygap doesn't really exist, companies instead hire the best people, not by gender.

"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."

According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.

This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.

"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.

"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.

"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.

Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.

"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.

"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.

"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.

an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”

Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.

"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.

"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.

At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
