A whopping 1.2 million people follow the ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram page and they can’t get enough of the tantalizing trivia it shares on their social media feeds. We’ve collected some of the most interesting history and science facts shared by the page for you to enjoy as well, dear Readers, so have a scroll down and upvote the ones that you found interesting and surprising.

You can share your thoughts, feelings, and opinions in the comment section. Ready to learn some awesome stuff? Let’s go!

More info: Instagram | App

The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’

Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.

"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.

"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."

According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.

This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.

"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.

WRONG! I’m an attorney, and I think you’re making a mistake many people make about the term “grand jury.” It’s not a trial. It’s a group of people who make a decision about whether or not there is enough evidence or reason to go to trial.

Anyone caught in the act of raping a 5 year old (or any child), needs to be beaten to death, and make sure they are conscious enough to feel the blows until their final breath. Just thinking about this makes me want to cry. That poor little child!!!

No. You'd be amazed at how often it's actually the parents who molest the child. Or it'll be something like they tell their mom that her new boyfriend touched them and the mom will find a way to blame the daughter- "You're a liar. You're a s**t, you tempted him. You just want me to be lonely, etc." The scariest thing about child molestation is how often people will protect the perpetrators and how badly people want to believe that it happens as a part of some conspiracy rather than simply the adults who have access to the child- including family.

In case anyone's wondering, he caught the rapist in the act. The reason he faces no charges is because Texas allows the use of deadly force to stop sexual assault. So if you're in Texas and happen upon someone raping another, feel free to kill the m**o..

However sympathetic one has to be with this man, it's not a good sign when the judicial system does not at least bring this to court. It's the judicial system's responsibility to be "blind" and judge everything on a neutral basis.

It's called jury nullification. It is a feature and not a flaw of trial by jury of your peers. It's working as intended. A judge can overrule this with a directed verdict but a directed verdict conviction is very appealable. Prior too the civil war, jury nullification was widely used to invalidate the fugitive slave act. During prohibition, it was frequently used to overturn prohibition laws. BUT during jim crow, it was also used to prevent convicting white men crimes against blacks (see lynching).

Unfortunately child rapist are not eligible for death penalty. Most of the USA just gives them a few years, releases them and puts them on a website so the public can be aware, free to roam and hurt more people. Rape crimes are not punished appropriately, but watch out if you evade taxes or lie about your address so your child can get into a better school. No wonder this man took justice upon himself to carry out.

When I think of that's child's pain and terror...well I just can't go too far down that road. Stories like this haunt me for days, weeks. I just don't understand how people can do things like this to children. Or anyone.

Invested some time in social work for terribly abused children. Each social worker had > 100 cases, and maximum was supposed to be 25. It's worse now. People would be horrified to learn the extent of this crime against humanity.

This is one time when I cannot find fault with eye for an eye (and Texas as well). I’m not a violent person, but if she was my child—-hell, even if she wasn’t!—-I very well would’ve have done the exact same thing. Everyone has their line in the sand, and cruelty of all kinds, especially when inflicted on those who truly cannot defend themselves, makes me see red.

In some jurisdictions, it's a case of "jury nullification". Basically, the jury is admitting that the crime happened (the man killed his daughter's rapist) but the jury believes that the charges (murder) were applied in an unjust manner. I don't believe Texas recognizes jury nullification, but there are other examples of this happening in Canada and the US.

IICR a young girl witnessed the abduction, alerted the father, he pull the rapist off, and beat him up to the point of near-death. 911 audio revealed the father called for help and tried to save the little girl's attacker, but the ambulance crew had difficulty because of the remote location. All, except the deceased, names were withheld to keep the victim's identity secret. Even though Texas' law covered this situation, it should be noted that the father had hired the man, which was in his employ at the time, and he tried to save the man's life.

It should be a law that a person is allowed to be beaten to death when a man rapes or molests children . Why? Why can’t we do this more often? More than half of these pieces of s**t get away with it and just go on sucking oxygen from the planet. If not , than castration should be preformed. I am a nurse who had been left a piece of s**t child raper to care for as a patient. It sickened me. He fell, cracked his head open . I’m glad he is dead.. I laughed while he laid there bleeding . I laughed while he was dying , and I still laugh to this very day. I have 1 regret though. I wish that I had poured his own urine in his eyes as he layed there. 1 less piece of s**t on this planet.

Texas allows you to use deadly force to stop a rape. The reason he was found not guilty is he caught the man mid attack and it is legal to kill him to stop the assault. Also, the average pedophile assaults 120 children. So who knows how many kids were saved.

Fantastic. In the last 10 to 20 years justice seems to favour the perpetrator and not the victim. Anyone who can do that to a five year old deserves everything they get. That child will probably never be able to have children, and may even have a damaged bladder and bowel. With the death sentence they normally get at least another 20 years alive. Not this time.

The five yr old didn't kill the rapist so it's not self defence. The dad protected her so it's a crime of passion. Kids have died after being raped because of STD's and damage to the body.

I saw this online when it first went to trial. Not guilty because it's 'A crime of passion'. If you walked in on a man raping your daughter, you'd do the same thing. If you shoot a man who you caught breaking into your home, it's the same. It's sort of like self defence.

Wow, after reading all the posts of kindness and altruism it's quite a shock to arrive at this. So most people here believe in vigilante justice. I am reminded of Emmett Till, the 14 year old black boy who winked at a white store clerk. He was beaten, tortured, shot in the back and thrown in the river. It's a historical event in the long tragedy of what people can do when they feel outraged. Lots of black men have been beaten or lynched because white men determined they had a right to deal out vigilante justice. You know they have trials in the U.S. because a person is considered innocent until proven guilty. The father took it upon himself to beat the man to death. Is that how you really want crimes to be settled? Vigilante justice determined by the offended person. Maybe you don't care about this one. But you may do something to someone that they think they have the right to get justice from you, on their terms. Would you like that?

Did u bother to READ what happened? The rapist was in the act of raping the 5 yr old daughter when the father caught him & began beating him. What that has to do w/an underaged "black boy" (I'm quoting u) being viciously murdered, I don't understand. To stop a sexual assault is not a form of vigilante justice. If u saw a man raping a 5 yr old child -ur child- would u intervene or just call a cop?

If there ever was an excusable reason to murder someone... this would be it. I mean, if you hurt a child... why do you deserve to have the same rights as the rest of us? You don't. That should be the one exception to human rights. You rape or hurt a child and you forfeit any rights you have. You made the choice to take a child's life.. whether by rape or by murder. You had a choice and you made the wrong one.. now you deserve to face the consequences and one of those consequences should be a beating by the parents of said child. If someone hurt one of my step daughters and got away with it... I would forfeit my freedom to ensure he never hurt another child ever again. Pedophiles don't change. Once they act on those urges they don't stop. They escalate. There's hundreds of statistics and studies to back me up. So the odds are that he WOULD have done it again, if he hadn't already and he WOULD escalate his crimes in order to conceal them.

Yes, it did, because we need to take murder seriously, and be really sure the reason is justified. In fact, one of the biggest problems in America is not enough cases (by percent, not by total number) going to trial.

He should have been given some kind of community service at the very least. But yeah, if someone did that to my baby, I can't say I would respond any differently.

so as far as I recall from the story it wasn't that he wasn't charged because his 'victim' rapes his daughter but that he actually did everything in his power to save the guys life. He caught the guy mid-attack and in a rage beat the man nearly to death then realised he was about to kill a guy, called for emergency serviced and did what he could to stop the bleeding but the ambulance took too long to come. It wasn't that he was 'rewarded' for killing a child rapist just that his initial outburst was understandable, unlikely to be repeated, and again, he really did try to save the guy's life. He didn't kill a guy in a blaze of fury he was a much bigger person than that which is even more incredible.

I seriously don't understand how when someone has shown themselves to be a Career Criminal and Multiple time Convicted Paedophile how do they keep getting Early Release etc. The Cops do their job and get frustrated when the judges give them a light sentence and while l understand there are Paedophiles in All sorts of jobs, for f***s sake, just put them in with the Lifers for awhile who have kids and grandkids, they may get a touch of justice!!!👍🌹💜🇦🇺🙏🕳️

I honestly see no other punishment & for the scumbucket to have waited in prison for a trial + sentence (where everything needed to live would have been provided daily) would’ve been wrong on so many levels… although I’m sure after his crime had gotten around, the other inmates most likely would’ve had him begging for death, well maybe so again I’ve gotta say, “kudos to you sir, kudos indeed!”

That's awesome. Kudos to this father for getting rid of another child rapist!!! I just realized a few months ago that I'm married to a serial child rapist! I'm in the process of getting a divorce and having him prosecuted for his crimes!! His father is also a rapist. (Both already have true bills) There hasn't really been any coverage about it bc the family has money, and unfortunately sometimes money buys your freedom here on earth. The victim has a lifetime mental sentence. These rapists will not always be able to use their money to get out of things.

Every single person who sexually violates children must be removed from society permanently. They will reoffend if they have access to children. While I, personally, would want to beat to death anyone who raped my child, as a society we really do need to take offending paedophiles out of society forever. Even rich ones, like Epstein and Maxwell and Elvis Presley and Steven Tyler, etc al.

Some pedophiles don't ever get caught, or their sentences don't match their crime. Beat their assess, sure, they will heal from that- and if they die from it, well, I think they should get the death penalty, so I feel justice has been served. But that little girl will carry the trauma of the rape all of her life- it will shape who she becomes as an adult. The rapist isn't the victim here. And yes, I live in Texas.

I can understand the actions of the man, and the verdict, and in this particular situation (walking in on the act) I would likely have done the same. But damn, these comment are filled with a lust for vigilante violence. And no distinction at all between passive pedophiles who didn't ask for this urge, know it's wrong and don't act on it, and active pedosexuals. Scary stuff. And violentely killing active pedosexuals is not 'cool' or something to celebrate. Ever consider that pedosexuals became that way because they started out as victims themselves? They must be stopped by all means, but It's tragedy and pain all around,. and being violent and sadistic just adds more misery.

Basically it means, everyone is free to pass the legal system, court, attorney and all, and directly apply a death sentence themselves, as long it is in the popular oppinion that the killed person deserved death. Now it it a rapist, another time it may have been a black guy who sat on the wrong seat...

This terrifies me. Vigilantism is NOT OK. The case of Ahmaud Arbery immediately came to mind. For non-US, Ahmaud, a black man in Georgia, US, was chased and shot by three white men for no crime other than walking into a construction site. I don't know the specifics of this Texas case, but unless he walked into the room while the rape is taking place, this is wrong. We have the rule of law for a reason. Citizens do not need to take the law into their own hands at will.

I don't want to get too graphic, but yes, the father caught the man in the act. Someone linked a news article above.

The biggest problem in the USA is the violence and weapons all over. The acting of the father is understandable. But he is also a murderer. In Germany is a act like this without a charge inconceivable. I think thats the bester way....

All pedophiles that have been convicted and/or caught in the act like this case should be put to death quickly. Because once you have those urges there is no helping you and we dont wanna have to pay for you when your locked up. Oxygen thieves is what i call them

Your sweeping statements are scary. You don't know as much as you think you do. This is NOT a comment in defence of pedophiles, but a comment pushing back against "I know everything about this subject" posts on the internet. You do NOT know. And you're advocating mass death for a group you don't know about. That's f*****g scary however awful these people are.

What made him think the man he killed raped his daughter? What if he raped his own daughter and the man he killed was going to expose him?

Although I sympathise with this, it's still very wrong for a jsutice system to work like that. Imagine the guy was innocent and he made up the story about rape.

"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.

Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.

"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.

"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.

"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.

an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”

Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.

"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.

"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”

I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.

At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

Wonderful story. I just need to point out the forest isn’t infested with bears and wolves - they live there.

It was a show about teaching cooking skills to prisoners to give them a job when they get out to rehabilitate them. Ramsey runs a foundation for that and has led to thousands of ex-cons in the UK getting gainful employment when they get out.

Here is a list of people living in abject poverty before becoming famous Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Tiffany Haddish, Kat Graham, Chris Pratt, Annie Murphy, Amara La Negra, Chris Hemsworth, Chrissy Metz, Jennifer Lopez (who was homeless), Richard Madden, Ed Sheeran, etc etc etc. There are also people who became rich and/or famous and ended without a dime or roof over their heads
