Many internet users call Australia the land of the 'NOPE'. But it's so much more than that. Just take a look at the country's subreddit and you'll see what it has to offer.
Physics teachers defending their houses from bushfires? Check. Sexy calendars? Check. Public bike repair stations? You bet. The members of this sub share pictures of pretty much everything that makes Australia the unique patch of land that it is.
Tony Abbott, a former politician who served as the Prime Minister of Australia, has said that "Once people come to Australia, they join the team." So since traveling in real life is still tricky, join Bored Panda on a voyage to the biggest Aussie subreddit on the internet.

Interestingly, Australia is considered the second driest continent after Antarctica. When you look at the busy Sydney harbor or the impressive skyline of metropolitan Melbourne, it seems almost unbelievable that nearly 40% of the continent is uninhabitable.
The lack of rainfall is one of the main reasons why such a huge amount of its landmass is so desolate. The national precipitation for 2020 was 483.4mm (19 inches). For comparison, even California gets about 563mm (22 inches) of rainfall every year.
This arid, uninhabitable part of Australia lies in the middle of the continent (the Outback), away from the coastline. And this is also the reason why more than 80% of the country’s population lives within 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the coast.

Aboriginal Australians first arrived at the Land Down Under from Maritime Southeast Asia sometime between 50,000 and 65,000 years ago. From the rainforests in the north, the deserts in the center, and the sub-Antarctic islands of Tasmania and Bass Strait, they penetrated to all parts of the continent.
In fact, the artistic, musical, and spiritual customs they've created are among the longest surviving such traditions in human history.

The first documented visit to Australia by a European was in 1606. The Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon landed on the western side of Cape York Peninsula and charted about 300 km (186 miles) of coastline.
There are claims of earlier landings by the Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Arabs, and Romans, but there is little credible documented evidence.

Fairy bread is a kids party classic. Just buttered bread with sprinkles, even better with Nutella instead of butter lol.
We call them hundreds and thousands here, but yes. Always on white bread with butter. None of this margarine/brown bread rubbish.
Load More Replies...I got told by some US friends that if they were to serve fairy bread at a party that it would be seen as being poor/trash, and that a cake was the right thing, and I laughed like crazy explaining that our parties also have cakes, the party could be catered and the cake could be 500 dollars and the whole party could be 10K but if there is no fairy bread did the little Aussie even have a party ? NO...and the best thing about kids parties in Australia is watching all the adults slowly creep towards the Fairy bread when they think no one is looking to get them some of that treasure, because as simple as it is, it is the funniest thing, we do not make it randomly usually, it is really saved for parties only and even though we are grown ups and can make our own any time, it is something we hold sacred to the party ♥
USA here: I remember those wax cola bottle treats. I haven't seen those in forever!
Those bottles aren't wax like the US ones, they are volatile flavoured gummies coated in suger.
Load More Replies...Some of these are staples in the UK too, Timtams are near enough the same as penguin biscuits, we have snowballs that are similar to the marshmallow/coconut/jam crackers, our dairy milk caramel koalas are freddos (used to be taz bars years ago xP) however in the UK versions we would probably have fox's party rings, pickled onion, cheese and hotdog on cocktail sticks, and a colin the caterpiller lol

Iced Vovos and they recently released a lamington version where the pink is now chocolate, but these are not the marshmallow ones there are fondant not mallow.

those mallow biscuits with jam striped centre you can get in UK and they are great except the biscuit base which is a bit meeeuhh
They are called cheekies now. Although I still call them chicos.

An Australian not liking fairy bread is like an Australian not liking Vegemite, rare as he's teeth lol.
Load More Replies...This is a plate of sweet stuff and Vegemite is not in that category.
Load More Replies...Milo is the best thing in the whole world and I pity countries that do not have it.
I had no idea that gummy cola bottles were Australian. I thought they were German (or at least somewhere-in-western-europe-an).
Aren't rhose four chocolate things at the bottom timtams?
Load More Replies...It's fresh white bread, buttered with sprinkles.
Load More Replies...This plate is Aussie sweet stuff and Vegemite is far from sweet.

Australia is such a wonderful country, I implore everyone to visit once Covid wraps up
It is an incredible place - my now husband and I travelled from UK and went on a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne in 2016. It is an incredible place, and I have many happy memories I treasure. The blue mountains in particular are very special. I kinda hope not too many people go there to help protect it from the idiots who don't respect the rules/ barriers, etc.
Load More Replies...I'm not frightened of any animals, but the problem is, in Australia, so many of them are dangerous and you just have no idea which ones, so you view all creatures with a good degree of caution.
Seriously, I've been here 50 years and can count on one hand how many dangerous animals and insects I,'ve come across. Only real freak was one huntsman the size of my hand. Had to drive 10kms before I cut it loose. I was actually paranoid it could find it's way back even then.
